Watching with interest

SirVixofVixHall · 06/03/2022 21:14

I would also like to know. I have donated to the DEC but would also like to send something to help the animal victims of this war.

Annoyedtoomuch · 06/03/2022 21:19

Bump. I’d like to know too. I’ve donated to the Red Cross.

Snooks1971 · 06/03/2022 21:22

Bump, thanks all. Breaks my heart.

I don't know any Ukrainian animal charity's but please don't donate to PETA they are evil.

I’ve donated to IFAW (naturally the DEC too). I want to give to Shelter Friend too referenced above. But I’m unclear as to whether money is able through. I’m heartbroken for the lovely woman running it, she has hundreds of cats and dogs in her care and even more coming in. Breeders dumped litters of pups on her when they fled. She is desperately fighting for her own survival and that of her family as well as her rescues. How on Earth can they get food? Will she just have to let them starve? I haven’t been able to look at her Facebook page today as her distress was terrible and I felt really helpless.
Before anyone questions helping animals, helping animals helps humans too. The amount of pictures of Ukrainians clutching their cat carriers and dogs shows that. The picture in the news today of a dead family with a pram and cat carrier was utterly horrific, shot as they tried to flee. The human and animal suffering is catastrophic and I just want to help but feel helpless like so many other people.

I will state why I've voted YABU as it really irks me when people don't. And I see it as cowardice.

While I think it's admirable that you're thinking about animal charities, what about all the men, women and children who need our help? Have you been donating to them too?

PotteringAlong · 06/03/2022 21:27

@BIWI I voted YABU for exactly the same reason. This is not a time for animals to come first.

Some people want to help animals that is nothing wrong, there is plenty of donations for others.

User76745333 · 06/03/2022 21:29

People are literally without food and water. Animal charities are not going to be operating in the normal way

BIWI · 06/03/2022 21:29

There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to help animals - goodness knows I would want to too - but I do think, on this occasion, that human lives have to come first.

Nothing to stop people doing both, of course.

DrierThanANunsNasty · 06/03/2022 21:30

@PotteringAlong @BIWI donation police are out in force I see.

  1. Nowhere has the OP said she hasn’t donated to human beings.
  1. You can care for both.
  1. It’s none of anyone’s business what people do with their own money so get off your high horses Hmm
Snooks1971 · 06/03/2022 21:31

I wasn’t aware that I had enabled voting sorry. It isn’t a black and white situation and I wasn’t asking for a pecking order of which living being should come first.

Asked for credible animal charities. Jeez.

Paws2rescue are an animal charity although at present they are working with the monasteries in Romania that have set themselves up to receive refugees and their animals. They are working with NGOs in Baia Mare. Details are on their just giving page below.

LoveLabradors · 06/03/2022 21:31

I’ve donated to humans and animals. I work in hospice care and know just how important the bond is with pets. It doesn’t have to be either or, it’s possible to have compassion for both and in my experience the kindest people usually have room to care for both people and animals. As I said helping the animals helps people too. And those who criticise that tend to do the least for their fellow humans I’ve noticed.

BIWI · 06/03/2022 21:32

Not the donation police at all.

I voted in response to the OP's post, and I gave my reason.

No high horses here.

How about you?

PotteringAlong · 06/03/2022 21:32

No, you’re right, you can donate to whomever you like.
I just cannot imagine watching the scenes coming out of Ukraine, watching the suffering of people and thinking “this is the amount of money I can afford to donate. I’m not donating it all to the charities helping those poor people because won’t someone think of the cats”

Snooks1971 · 06/03/2022 21:32

Nice backtrack

Not particularly an animal lover but know a lot here are. Found this from a link on Ukraine on rspca Facebook. It was end of Feb but presumably still relevant

There is a different link from Huddersfield rspca

Nobody has said they come first, for christs sake they are just asking where they can donate for the animals

BIWI · 06/03/2022 21:35

Not backtracking from anything Hmm

I stand by my vote on your AIBU. I think YABU. For the reasons I have given.

That doesn't stop me from thinking that what's happening to animals must be horrible. But I still think that human lives need charity more than animals.

No backtracking on this issue at all

Againstmachine · 06/03/2022 21:35

All the idiots on here you do realise you can care about the people and also animals.

LoveLabradors · 06/03/2022 21:36

What do you do to help alleviate suffering in this world @PotteringAlong? I’m intrigued to know, it must be enormous if you are able to police what others do.

Exactly - the people who have to leave their beloved pets. They are family members. Thank you @LoveLabradors
