I'm sorry if you think I'm unpleasant. (I'm actually quite nice really Smile)

But I was being honest when I replied to your AIBU. I stood by my vote. And I explained why I'd voted that way.

You've had a lot of people vote the same way as I have, who haven't bothered to post.

To be clear - I don't think that animals aren't worth our time/consideration. But I do think that human beings - especially families with children - are more of a priority at this moment in time. And I would be bereft if we had to leave our cats behind, for whatever reason - so I do understand.

But if that makes me someone 'unpleasant' then I will have to live with that.

If you’re on Twitter, OP, Naturewatch Foundation have a pinned tweet of reputable shelters to donate to.

@Bluebellberry

Ukrainians fleeing with their pets. I’m pretty sure they’d all be very grateful for food, bedding, medicine etc for their loved ones
Yep, that’s me. And my husband and 3 kids. Dog and elderly cat. Never ever would leave the pets behind.

Lots of individual shelters. See attached image for FB group.

I also donated to war paws who deal with many conflicts and worked closely with Kabul Small Animal Rescue in Afghanistan.

If I had to flee a War torn country, I know I'd take my Whippet along, but with one pet one can travel light. No way would I leave her behind, even if it meant walking.
So I understand why the Ukrainians are bringing their pets.

Stepmonstera · 06/03/2022 22:38

I believe you can donate to support ukraines zoos. i can't post a link or i think it'll get deleted. Kyiv zoo have not been able to evacuate any of the animals the zoo keepers are staying with them and trying to keep them safe.

whumpthereitis · 06/03/2022 22:38

@twominutesmore

Well I feel the thread was always going to be contentious, particularly for those of us with family in Ukraine.

You can donate your own money to whoever you like but it does feel like a tone deaf question in the circumstances. Personally I'd have just googled it.

Do not speak for all of us who have family in Ukraine.

You can absolutely post a link without being deleted.

Biwi... I get where you're coming from. But the way I see it, we're exposed to 24/7 news and crisis after crisis. It's impossible to donate everywhere. I always feel bad I'm not doing enough but sometimes it's just not realistic to donate to every cause.

As long as there's a net positive, I'm at peace with however people spend their donations.

(The only thing I don't like is people who actively dislike other humans, but it doesn't sound like op is like that)

Children are dying, people don’t have basic supplies. I love my pets and animals don’t deserve to suffer in this war but giving money that could go to help innocent suffering people to animals instead is just wrong.

People are absolutely right that you can (and should) care about the suffering of animals as well as that of people. But we have finite resources and they should go to people first. I don’t know how you can look at the pictures of families fleeing under shelling with only what they can carry and think “I need to give some of my money to dogs instead”.

If OP buys some wine to relax with at home, should she have sent that money to a humanitarian charity instead?

It’s so sad. I saw a post where a small monkey had died in a Ukraine zoo from the fear of an explosion. I’m sure many other animals have too. The workers are amazing.

Then by all means feel free not to donate to animal charities with your own money. You don’t get to decide for anyone else.

Of course she shouldn’t have to - she can do what she likes - but that doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. If we were all perfect we’d all be giving away everything we could possibly do without. But if you’ve got money specifically going to charity and specifically to Ukraine then it would be better spent on people than pets.
HikingforScenery · 06/03/2022 22:55

@BIWI

I will state why I've voted YABU as it really irks me when people don't. And I see it as cowardice.

While I think it's admirable that you're thinking about animal charities, what about all the men, women and children who need our help? Have you been donating to them too?

Some people would Esther support animal lives than human lives. No need denying this or getting frustrated by it. I don’t understand it but it is what it is.
Anonymouslyposting · 06/03/2022 22:55

Of course I don’t get to decide. But when the OP posts in AIBU they are going to get opinions - which they are as free to ignore as I am free to express.

Sorry, quote fail, that was in reply to @whumpthereitis
Christienne · 06/03/2022 22:58

The picture in the news today of a dead family with a pram and cat carrier was utterly horrific, shot as they tried to flee

That photo really upset me too.

Thanks, OP for the thread, I was just wondering the same thing as you this evening.

I’ll throw a few quid extra to the charity on behalf of everyone on this thread berating you.

You don’t have to ‘know how people can do it.’

Dashel · 06/03/2022 22:59

I donated to IFAW as well. I might look into others as well.

Before anyone moans about how I spend my money, I also donated to the DEC appeal, DH donated to the Red Cross as well.

Whilst there are so many people talking about donating to animals in Europe, please could I ask you to have a look at this website that uses free clicks to donate food/ blankets to shelters abroad? It appears to be genuine and doesn’t require any money from you as the website traffic earns advertising revenue which is used to pay for the food. You can visit daily

www.animalwebaction.com/en/

Thanks very much!

Enzbear · 06/03/2022 23:02

Yanbu op Halo
It's terrifying for both people and animals.

No way would we be leaving such a horrible situation without our pets. If they had to stay behind so would we.

I am so sick of the MN judgy pants brigade.

whumpthereitis · 06/03/2022 23:06

OP posted in AIBU to ask for charity recommendations. She’s actively trying to do good, regardless of whether you approve of where she’s directing it. You’ve decided to berate her which is neither helpful, relevant, important, or in any way beneficial to anyone. Just because you’re free to express an opinion doesn’t mean you always should.

OP, I’m also making another donation on the back of the criticism you’re getting. You have helped, directly and indirectly.

whumpthereitis · 06/03/2022 23:07
