I am thinking of starting a collection.

But what of ? If you have a collection you are proud of, can I ask what it is ?

OP posts:

Climbing & mountaineering books, sea glass.

RagamuffinCat · 06/03/2022 18:11

50 pence coins. I am not particularly proud of it, but I enjoy it.

CheekySwifter · 06/03/2022 18:14

Teapots. All types of wonderful shapes and sizes.

Shiningpath · 06/03/2022 18:14

Generally collections come about because you love something and amass lots of examples, not because you wake up one day and decide to start collecting.

What do you love?

This.

I have a few collections of things but none were started intentionally.

BoodleBug51 · 06/03/2022 18:16

useless family members.

not proud of it.

Am quite proud of my Emma Bridgewater mug collection though.... I'm embarrassed to admit to two whole shelves of them in a double cupboard.

Ancient coins. I don't regard myself as a collector, I just bought a few from my favourite period of history. Some serious collectors will build up sets of coins, but I just go for what I like. I only have half a dozen, which I started collecting just before the first lockdown, so I've only bought them online.

What I like about coins is that I 'own' a piece of my favourite period of history. Coins are pretty cheap, low maintenance and don't take up much space.

With collecting, you have to enjoy what you collect, so start with your interests.

Another less glamorous collection is fridge magnets from when we go on holiday. I like having a reminder of our trips.

APurpleSquirrel · 06/03/2022 18:50

We have fridge magnets - we started as it was the only thing we could afford as poor students & have carried on.
I love bees so have quite a few bee-related things - cushions, jewellery, bee hotels
As other PP say - what interests you?

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 06/03/2022 19:04

Salt and pepper sets. As a PP said, I didn't wake up one moring and say ' Mmm, I'll collect salt and pepper sets'. It just happened - I don't go looking for them, but if I see something that I like then............... I must have around 50 sets now and even bought a display cabinet. I do use them, some are seasonal e.g. Christmas, Easter, Summer etc. Some are just fun.

Nothavingfunrightnow · 06/03/2022 19:08

I collect Christmas decorations from places I've been. I buy them when I'm at the place rather than online. It started by accident. I LOVE my decorations and my Xmas tree 😁

whoruntheworldgirls · 06/03/2022 19:09

Fridge magnets every time i go to a new holiday destination

Clickbait21 · 06/03/2022 19:09

MrsScrubbingbrush · 06/03/2022 19:13

Beautiful, coloured perfume bottles and atomisers.

As a family we collect fridge magnets

Goldfishmountainclimber · 06/03/2022 19:14

I am absolutely out of the mindset of collecting anything these days. I am all about declutter, declutter, declutter! We need to make our London house work for children getting bigger. I have read Marie Kondo, watched The Minimalists, thought about the environment and attempt some sort of spin on this amongst the real life situation of Lego and the washing.

Do you need to collect?

MiniTheMinx · 06/03/2022 19:14

I collect several things, but everything C18th. The thing I'm most interested in is C18th oak furniture. I'm not proud of it, but it makes me feel at home. Also have a big collection of antique militaria.

We have a few salt and pepper shakers. DH complained we had too many one time so my friend bought us another set for Xmas one year as a joke Grin

My mam collected elephants, she had a few ornaments... & every birthday, Christmas family kept buying more... Ornaments, earrings, brooches, pictures, I even adopted one for her once.
Eventually, she asked why we all kept buying elephants. Cos she didn't really collect them! We just thought she did, & then kind of made her.

PeacefulInTheDeep · 06/03/2022 19:16

Pressed pennies. They're souvenirs of holidays and day trips rather than a collection as such.

Woozlewoo · 06/03/2022 19:18

Disney Traditions by Jim Shore

Chishnfips · 06/03/2022 19:19

Squashed pennies. Ive got loads from here in the UK but really chuffed to find some in NYC to add to my collection too.

reddA · 06/03/2022 19:22

Guilloche enamel, cut glass silver topped bottles, Ditchfield glass - it's got to be something you love and appreciate

hilariousnamehere · 06/03/2022 19:23

Model horses, sea glass, typewriters, books :)
