I am thinking of starting a collection.

But what of ? If you have a collection you are proud of, can I ask what it is ?

Do books count?

I have 3 filled bookcases, another box of books in the garage that I don’t really enjoy reading but I can’t bear to get rid of, and I urm….buy at least one new book a week Blush

We love going hunting for sea glass! Keeps the kids entertained for hours.

I also collect dogs, not on purpose.

Bhud · 06/03/2022 19:30

Small dishes - mezze plates, dipping bowls, mini prep bowls, tapas bowls

Totally accidental but we use them all the time and I enjoy collecting them

TimeForTeaAndG (would love to know what the G is for)!! The thing with salt and pepper shakers is that they are mostly small, so don't take up much space, our cabinet is around 1 sq. meter, hangs on the wall, has variable compartments and is - even for me - easily accessable.

Kazzyhoward · 06/03/2022 19:31

Don't "collect" anything really. I've spent years decluttering and sorting out all kinds of things I've collected in the past. I've made a resolution only to buy things that have a genuine use/need for. I had boxes of old photo albums, home videos, etc which I've digitised so I can "keep" them but not in a physical form. I still have a very small number of "objets d'art" and souvenirs bought on holidays, but only things with special meaning, not tat like fridge magnets or plastic crap made in China!

Moody123 · 06/03/2022 19:33

A shot glass filled with sand from every country we have visited

mizzo · 06/03/2022 19:37

Not telling just in case one of you knows me and starts buying them for me! I only want ones I've chosen myself.

MulticatHouse · 06/03/2022 19:37

Fridge magnets, garden ornaments and cats.

I've just realised this now, my DH collects an oyster shell from everywhere we have eaten oysters - luckily only one shell from each location and not all dozen, two dozen.......... (need I mention that we both LOVE fresh oysters)???????

Gingercatlover · 06/03/2022 19:42

Emma Bridgewater and Cornishware, only have a smallish collection compared to some of the ladies I have seen on insta but spend lots of time browsing for more. 🤣

Chouradanilova · 06/03/2022 19:44

Ballet related things, books, programmes, signed pointe shoes etc, Art Deco ceramics, modernist silver jewellery, old Vogue magazines. I started off by collecting Wedgwood jasper ware when I was about 10. Always enjoy a decent Antique centre/charity shop/secondhand bookshop.

DramaAlpaca · 06/03/2022 19:48

Fridge magnets, Christmas decorations and perfume.

wearewizardsofoz · 06/03/2022 19:52

1970s Retro furniture and accessories. I don't have a lot as it's expensive at the moment and I take pride in a bargain!

stripeyflowers · 06/03/2022 19:52

I can't collect what I really want to collect which is cats. Real ones. I could never have enough.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/03/2022 19:54

Lego. Unfortunately not the big sets, just little ones. Our biggest is the Saturn V. My fantasy list includes the Titanic, Globe, World Map, Hogwarts, a Pirate ship, and some of the Modular buildings.

EssexLioness · 06/03/2022 19:57

I have 3 small collections and am very picky what I add to them. Only pieces that I absolutely adore and I don’t spend much time seeking objects out:

  • shell collection: done this all my life. As a child I had over 1000. I now have around 30, all unusual ones or ones that remind me of specific times.
  • snow globes: always been fascinated by them but I prefer ones that are fairly muted in colours and design. Have 5.
  • children’s books: many from my own childhood memories. Picture books and I find them very soothing to read. They bring me a lot of joy (I’m 44 with no kids)
  • cake stands: I love to bake and have far too many. I really should get rid of them but I don’t know which ones to get rid of.

I have a lifelong love of geology and would love to collect rocks and fossils but I do hate clutter and I feel I don’t really need to start another collection

Rowgtfc72 · 06/03/2022 19:59

Anything giraffe related and fridge magnets.
Dh also collects Lego but only the huge technic models.

Geamhradh · 06/03/2022 20:01

Perfume.
I have about 300 I think. Mainly vintage.

TroysMammy · 06/03/2022 20:01

I've got postcards and paperweights but I haven't added to them for a few years. I love pandas and have got quite a bit of panda stuff. Every one buys me panda things.

Lactarius · 06/03/2022 20:03

Mostly tools and half finished projects (currently working on a steel ram's skull) but I have started collecting Soviet items such as propaganda posters, medals (I particularly like the medal for 20 years labour in the Internal Security Ministry) and militaria.

@theyhavenothingbuttheaudacity

Ex husbands
Me too. I should have stuck to pencils or fridge magnets or something Grin
Mintyraindrop · 06/03/2022 20:06

Glass Friendship Balls and glass paperweights

KatherineofGaunt · 06/03/2022 20:06

Bags. I don't mean Louis Vuitton, I mean nice carrier bags! I used to collect the paper ones from Monsoon, I had a load people brought me from abroad, I kept ones given with presents, or from interesting events you couldn't get again like the Queen's Patrons' Lunch.

I chucked virtually all of them when I bought my first flat. It just wasn't feasible to store them anymore.
