To ask what you collect ?

I am thinking of starting a collection.

But what of ? If you have a collection you are proud of, can I ask what it is ?

OP posts:

French pottery
Fridge magnets , which has only been collected for about 15 years as my favourite collection of pin badges ( nearly 50 years) seems to be dying out as fewer places seem to sell them.

I pin them onto a beautifully framed cork board and every single one takes me back to a lovely memory.

Catinabeanbag · 07/03/2022 20:08

Cards / postcards; not obsessively, but when we're away somewhere and I see a nice card or postcard I'll buy it.
Sew on patches - the sort that interrailers used to have sewn all over their rucksacks (not that I did interrailing). They're fairly cheap, light and don't break in a suitcase. I've got about 40 from various towns / cities / countries.

Greydog · 07/03/2022 20:10

Vintage china, and embroidered table clothes, Barbies, WW1/2 memorabilia

Hawkins001 · 07/03/2022 22:17
@Hawkins001 - DH & DS use either "the magic card trader" or "axionnow" for buying their cards. Really quick delivery (sorry for minor derail).
Much appreciated, I'll note them in my journal.

For my main seller when new sets are released

Nothing. It might appear to the casual obsever that I collect yarn... I don't collect it. I just have a lot of it Grin. But it's all destined to be made into things and used/worn/given away, so I don't think it counts as a collection!

HomeEdRocks18 · 07/03/2022 22:49

Steiff bears

bowtieandheels · 07/03/2022 22:53

Original Art Deco jewellery and in particular cocktail rings, 3 of them were featured on the Antiques Roadshow, that properly made my year!

Corcory · 07/03/2022 23:59

I have collected a few things like Denby china, my mum gave me some mugs once and I liked it so much I asked for the design as presents for a few years till I got the full set. I also spotted a 1950s design that my posh Aunt used to have so I started collecting that. I have also collected Ercol furniture in the last few years.

Hawkins001 · 07/03/2022 23:59

A friend collects those Charlie bears and the bad bears too, and another person collects toys from a company called bad dragon toys.

RiverSkater · 08/03/2022 00:05

Christmas Baubles, we each buy a new one every year.

Glass snow globes.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 08/03/2022 05:44

@mysweetlemonpie

I can't imagine deliberately going out of my way to collect things unless there was already a passion/interest.

What a waste of time/money/effort/space/resources!
(Not genuine collectors - you guys knock yourself out)

Yes I think that's what I meant when I asked why. Surely collecting things comes from an interest, and develops organically?
bruffin · 08/03/2022 06:59

It does come interest. I don't go out and deliberately look to buy.
I was in Fuerteventura last week. We were at a museum and I saw a little fridge magnet with a tortoise on it (we had a tortoise for 40 years)
Most things are bought for me, my DC buy me espresso cups when they go away. I don't have a lot and I use them ,except my Damien Hurst one

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 08/03/2022 07:06

I don't add to them anymore, but I have a collection of mineral/marble eggs, seashells, and white jugs.

MinglingFlamingo · 08/03/2022 10:17

Yes. Thimbles clearly aren't as popular as they used to be and I can't always find one when we go away now. As others have said, I don't mention it much because they record where we've been, I don't want other people adding to my collection!

Same! Although I inherited a lot from a great dgm. And some people have brought me nice one from their travel. Especially when I was little I was about 8 when I started collecting them.

I have to be rather inventive about what counts as a motif which would remind me of somewhere now

furmumma · 08/03/2022 10:24

Crystals & rocks - I'm like a magpie, if it's shiny I want it!

Fernandina · 08/03/2022 13:59

@iklboo

I agree. Why do you want to collect stuff, OP?

Why not? We're not all the same. I hate minimalism. It's so empty to me, although I appreciate it's not everyone's taste.

I think the pp was asking because the OP still hasn't come back to the thread.
SuitcaseOfWhine · 08/03/2022 14:31

Dust mainly. Grin

I don't collect anything intentionally, but if I get a coin with an interesting pattern I stick it somewhere safe, so I guess I have been collecting, just not fully aware of it.

CloverInCrimson · 08/03/2022 14:48

I like Clarice Cliff, vintage bears and kitsch things. It's lovely reading about other people's collections Smile

LaWench · 08/03/2022 14:49

Nothing. I'm a minimalist.

TabbyM · 08/03/2022 15:41

RSPB pin badges (accidentally)
Books

RamonaBadwolf · 08/03/2022 19:49

Christmas decorations - I love them! Cacti and tropical fish. Would love to collect art but it’s a bit spenny, so prints it is for me! They make me happy though.

RusholmeRuffian · 08/03/2022 19:59

Records
Trainers
Fridge Magnets

neverbeenskiing · 08/03/2022 20:40

I collect vinyl records. Digital is convenient, but there's just something about having a physical copy of an album you love. I find the simple act of putting a record on really soothing for some reason. I also find that I listen to the music more mindfully and get properly 'lost' in it. As pp have said I didn't set out to build a collection, I just love music, but now that I have amassed this collection it's become precious to me and it feels satisfying to keep adding to it.
