I am thinking of starting a collection.

But what of ? If you have a collection you are proud of, can I ask what it is ?

Wedgwood Jasperware. Pink, blue, green, dark blue, red, yellow….

ChocolateDigestivesMmmm · 06/03/2022 20:28

Fridge magnets...they're super tacky but fun to look at and remind me of the lovely trips and holidays we've had.

Nostalgia bits and bobs - keepsakes from my childhood...and a collection of 80s Moondreamers dolls that I somehow got addicted to buying on eBay.

@Giggorata I completely agree about being cautious telling others. I am incredibly particular about my pieces, especially my snow globes. I know people would buy them for me if they knew so I don’t mention it to anyone. The ones I like are very understated but many of those I see in shops are brightly coloured, loud or made from plastic which Wouldn’t fit in with my collection or tastes.
I am not particular with hedgehog bits so they are always welcome. People know about my love for hedgehogs and my sister in particular has bought me some lovely pieces over the years.

Emma bridgewater........I can quite happily spend an afternoon staring at and rearranging my dresser 😂 Dh thinks I'm mad but keeps me happy.
Find something you love and go from there

@Lottieloves

I collect Rupert the Bear Annuals. It started as about 10 years ago and i was clearing out the loft in my mums house to help her move. I found a annual from the year I was born. (1973) I go into Charity shops where ever I am to have a look but buy quite a few from Ebay. I have now have approx 30. Every Christmas I buy the current one as a gift to myself. I never read them just collect them. I am hoping to past them on to my son when he is older.
I've got one somewhere, 1960s, if I can find it I'll PM you

I collect a small, nice stone from the beach wherever I go. I write on the underside in very fine tip permanent ink the date and place.

Ylvamoon · 06/03/2022 20:33

Books - l love travel accounts, poetry and early dictionaries/ encyclopedias. They are usually first editions or have a specialist binding.

But I agree with previous poster, you need to be passionate about the objects you intend to collect. For me it's about texture & smell 😳 of the books as well as the words/ language / expressions used to describe places, things or feelings.

I collect theatre programmes, never go without buying one. And I collect Barbie dolls. Collectors item ones, in boxes. I love them so much. And am v proud of them. They look like works of art to me.

Wailywailywaily · 06/03/2022 20:39

I was wondering if anyone else collected jugs. I didn’t mean to but it seems to be something that middle aged women in my family do. Everyone just gives me jugs. They are all good, handmade ones, beautifully designed.

iklboo · 06/03/2022 20:39

Vintage compacts. I have about 70 now ranging from 1930s to 1960s.

MrPenguinsPoppers · 06/03/2022 20:40

Disney Traditions and full size props, mostly Star Wars.

Violinist64 · 06/03/2022 20:49

Music related items, including instruments, books, paperweights and Royal Worcester and Royal Doulton figurines of child characters. I do cull items, particularly paperweights, if they start to become too cluttered.

Wartywart · 06/03/2022 20:56

Italian empoli glass decanters. Blue and purple ones. Like these. I only have 5, and it started because I picked a pair up in a junk shop. I like the colours, and the shapes. I keep an eye if I go to car boot sales or flea markets etc.

To ask what you collect ?
Alpenguin · 06/03/2022 21:04

I collect rubbers (erasers not old condoms) - I have boxes from the 80s and whenever I see something special now I add to them. I have boxes for each decade since I started. I keep meaning to catalogue them but kids want to play with them and some are worth money now, so will need to wait until it’s no longer cool to them

Rosebell75 · 06/03/2022 21:09

Shot glasses, I like unusual ones from places I’ve visited. They’re small, cheap and at least I’ll use them!

Hohofortherobbers · 06/03/2022 21:15

Small beautiful pebbles, I make towers of them on my windowsills in decreasing size, its an ongoing challenge to get them to stay put.

louderthan · 06/03/2022 21:16

80s/90s Royal Family memorabilia.

Bhud · 06/03/2022 21:22

@Goldfishmountainclimber

I am absolutely out of the mindset of collecting anything these days. I am all about declutter, declutter, declutter! We need to make our London house work for children getting bigger. I have read Marie Kondo, watched The Minimalists, thought about the environment and attempt some sort of spin on this amongst the real life situation of Lego and the washing.

Do you need to collect?

We have a very minimalist clutter free home and I still manage to have my collection of small dishes but they are in kitchen cupboards and are also used regularly so have a function.
AiryFairyLights · 06/03/2022 21:25

My Nora Robert’s books - over 150 now and they’re my pride and joy! I would be devastated if anything happened to them x

Nanalisa60 · 06/03/2022 21:26

Wartywart

That’s what I collect , I just love the blue glass , my living room is teal and grey , the blue glass looks lovely in it, I have also got all mine from charity shops and car boot sales. But I have enough now and unless it something really nice I won’t be buying any more, if I do then another piece will be going back to the charity shop.

TillyTopper · 06/03/2022 21:27

I collect nothing! I declutter as I go - easier to keep tidy and easier to keep clean!

Itwasntmeright · 06/03/2022 21:28

I collect Records. I’ve got all sorts but I particularly collect early and first press Beatles records. It’s quite a costly hobby.
