To not understand the fuss about Krispy Kremes?

Ok, so maybe not the fuss, but why are they everywhere and as popular as they are? My local Sainsburys started stocking them last year and they seem to be pretty popular there.

I like the occasional donut, particularly hot fresh ones when I go to the seaside. I had a pretty good glazed ring one from Morrisons the other day that hit the spot too.

Krispy Kreme feel like poor clones of doughnuts. The glazes are very shiny, granted, but the artificial flavourings in them, and the fillings, leave a sort of plasticky taste behind. I can't really bring myself to eat one of the 'Kreme' filled ones after reading the ingredients that go into it. I'd never even heard of 'diammonium phosphate' until I did a bit of internet digging.

They're also full of palm oil, both the donuts and the glazes.

Are we just eating them because they're everywhere? Or do we genuinely think they're the best?

Now I want a cronut!

Thewiseoneincognito · 03/03/2022 09:29

OP If you’re ever in Glasgow there’s a gem of a place called Tantrum doughnuts. We’re staying a night in Glasgow in the summer just to get some of them.

You won’t be disappointed.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/03/2022 09:32

They don't taste great, but I must say they look fantastic, and I think that's what you pay for. The seasonal designs and glazes are a step ahead of other products, and a box of a dozen Krispy Kremes is always very popular at work.

Obviously hot donuts freshly fried and sprinkled with sugar are a million times more delicious.

ChaToilLeam · 03/03/2022 09:32

I was so excited to try a Krispy Creme when they became available. And I was so disappointed. So sugary, my teeth were screaming. Just give me a plain normal one from a bakery instead.

Ringmaster27 · 03/03/2022 09:33

I used to love them, but haven’t been able to go anywhere near them for the past 5 years.
When I was pregnant with DC2, I had one of those moments in between waves of nausea where I fancied a donut. I had a maple flavoured one, which promptly reappeared 🤢 Ever since then, even just walking past the display cabinet and getting a waft of Krispy Kreme smell makes me heave 🤢

ZaZathecat · 03/03/2022 09:35

I think it's just very strong marketing that makes them so popular

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/03/2022 09:38

Not a favourite of mine either. I think some people just like the packaging tbh! And the fact it looks fancy.

I’d prefer an old fashioned jam filled doughnut too, but it’s all personal taste

Lorw · 03/03/2022 09:40

All their donuts are really oily tasting 😩 give me a good ol’ Morrisons donut anyday 🤤

Silvercatowner · 03/03/2022 09:47

Oh goodness they are AMAZING. I was diagnosed coeliac 8 years ago and a Krispy Kreme doughnut was the last glutenous thing I ate. I remember it as if it were yesterday.

(Although it did make me feel sick...)
Bluesheep8 · 03/03/2022 09:52

I have a hierarchy of preference and plain hot ring donuts are right at the top.

Agreed

TheNinny · 03/03/2022 09:59

Agreed. I preferred Dunkin’ donuts when it existed here though 😁

Dahlietta · 03/03/2022 10:06

How is it snobbery when I said I prefer Morrisons ones?

Ah, but that's how Mumsnet snobbery works! Boden? Center Parcs? Those candles I can't remember the name of? Dreadful, awful, why would you pay for those when you could pay for Primark/Pontins/a box of matches?

Dahlietta · 03/03/2022 10:06

I forgot Waitrose Grin

CommonPrimrose · 03/03/2022 10:07

Obviously you are not being unreasonable.

CommonPrimrose · 03/03/2022 10:07

I prefer Gregg's.

SheWoreYellow · 03/03/2022 10:09

The pink ones taste revoltingly artificial. The other ones are nice enough. But they are astonishingly expensive! It feels like they are taking the piss.

HoldingTheDoor · 03/03/2022 10:09

A good yum-yum is the best doughnut, besides the tiny freshly made and still hot ring doughnuts.

RantyAunty · 03/03/2022 10:13

Haven't had one in years.
I do like the strawberry jam or chocolate iced custard.
Think I'll get one tomorrow.

LassoOfTruth · 03/03/2022 10:19

Agree, they are foul compared with even other franchises like Dunkin’ Donuts (not sure if we have these in the UK though?) Way too sweet and artificial weird taste

NotMeekNotObedient · 03/03/2022 10:32

YANBU. They are horrid.

I'd much prefer fresh hot sugary donuts from a van or lovely jam filled one from a bakery.

KMTKaren · 03/03/2022 10:34

Try them fresh then they are worth it otherwise prefer other doughnuts or yumnuts

britneyisfree · 03/03/2022 10:35

I can't eat doughnuts anymore (gluten) but when I did I thought krispy kreme were disgusting.

Give me a good old greggs jam doughnut any day!

And of course the hot sugary ones at the seaside.... still so hard to resist!!!

HotPenguin · 03/03/2022 10:39

They are SO sugary, the couple of times I've had one I felt ill after. But I agree they look amazing, they've done a good marketing job to make a donut into a luxury item!

StPaulandTheBrokenBones · 03/03/2022 10:44

I like Birds jam doughnuts. They are amazing.
