To not understand the fuss about Krispy Kremes?

theqentity · 03/03/2022 07:50

Ok, so maybe not the fuss, but why are they everywhere and as popular as they are? My local Sainsburys started stocking them last year and they seem to be pretty popular there.

I like the occasional donut, particularly hot fresh ones when I go to the seaside. I had a pretty good glazed ring one from Morrisons the other day that hit the spot too.

Krispy Kreme feel like poor clones of doughnuts. The glazes are very shiny, granted, but the artificial flavourings in them, and the fillings, leave a sort of plasticky taste behind. I can't really bring myself to eat one of the 'Kreme' filled ones after reading the ingredients that go into it. I'd never even heard of 'diammonium phosphate' until I did a bit of internet digging.

They're also full of palm oil, both the donuts and the glazes.

Are we just eating them because they're everywhere? Or do we genuinely think they're the best?

Yes very artificial tasting and the weird gooey fillings are unpleasant and an odd texture. No thanks.

RavenT · 03/03/2022 08:06

Had my first one last week and couldn't finish it, way too sweet. DS loves them.

Best doughnuts are warm sugared ones at the seaside. Smile

Renovationstation · 03/03/2022 08:06

They're all about the presentation and the fact they're everywhere. We bought the kids some during lockdown from our local drive through (you know, when any simple thing was an exciting road trip! Grin) and they didn't finish them as they obviously weren't that keen on the flavour, but now I get hassled to buy them as they seem to have those glass cabinets in every supermarket and shopping centre now. I've made it a birthday or Christmas treat purchase only now.

They're a rip off too, I love a bag of jam doughnuts from the supermarket for £1!

RoastedFerret · 03/03/2022 08:07

I don't think she is eating them as some kind if healthful though. Breaking news some people eat shit food sometimes because they think it tastes good. In other news not everybody likes the same things.

SpaghettiNotCourgetti · 03/03/2022 08:08

Going against the grain: I love them and could happily eat a box of twelve. By myself. And now I want to.

thenewduchessoflapland · 03/03/2022 08:10

I'll admit a weakness for tim hortons honey crullers.Where I live there is an abundance of gourmet doughnut shops that sell massive doughnuts with an assortment of incredible toppings.

However the god tier of doughnuts is the fresh ring ones from the seaside/fairs etc

Grinling · 03/03/2022 08:12

I hate the trad ring doughnuts — I find them weirdly oily. I haven’t had a KK doughnut in years, but I used to quite like the Boston Creme ones, with the custard filling. I think the fact that they don’t taste in any way natural is part of the point, as is the extreme sweetness.

hugr · 03/03/2022 08:13

I'm not, I just like food to be made with other food items, not the contents of a science lab

Morrisons iced ring doughnuts ingredients:

I worked making donuts in a factory once. We had to push fresh blocks of white fat into the frying vat every now and again. Put me off for life.

If you're going to increase your risk of premature death, it's got to at least be tasty!

stuntbubbles · 03/03/2022 08:15

I think people are tasting the price: “Mmm, £6.50 for this box of stingy mini doughnuts, yummy.” When they’re no better than Greggs, really.

Crosstown for a “fancy” doughnut, seaside or fairground for a fresh hot fried thing, ideally churros.

Myturnatlast · 03/03/2022 08:15

Donut snobbery, only on MN 🤣

I like Krispy Kremes and seaside donuts and traditional jam ones, they're not mutually exclusive you know?!

bigbluebus · 03/03/2022 08:17

I don't get them either. In our family the best donuts by far are the jam ones sold at our local high street bakery which are made fresh every day (and must be eaten that day - not sitting around in a box for days). Simple is best.

lugeforlife · 03/03/2022 08:17

I love a doughnut but agree re KK. They are too 'nothing'. No substance.

For those Bristol based I loved a Pipkins doughnut. Stalls would pop up over city and other SW street food/farmers markets. Their custard doughnuts were incredible.

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 03/03/2022 08:17

I’m with you op, they just seem like some weird thing that represents a donut but isn’t made out of food. I’ll admit to being pretty fussy though and there’s barely any ice cream or bought cakes or chocolates I’ll bother with these days. These things with their 100+ ingredients lists will still be looking fresh on supermarket shelves long after humanity has died out 🤮

girlmom21 · 03/03/2022 08:18

I agree. They're just shit. They don't taste nice, they have horrible textures and they're massively overpriced.

I also agree with hot, fresh ringed doughnuts!
Followed by sainsburys jam doughnuts.

WouldIwasShookspeared · 03/03/2022 08:20

I think they are horribl. Stale and so artificial tasting and too sweet even for me.

I always wanted to try them because they look so amazing. I was very very disappointed when I finally tried some.

hellcatspangle · 03/03/2022 08:22

Nor me, totally overrated. I'd much prefer a standard jam or custard donut from a supermarket.

Someone bought me a box of 12 once, biggest waste of money and I didn't taste one that was superior to a cheap donut.

Innocenta · 03/03/2022 08:22

I'm annoyed with them for dropping the Veganuary ones! But have to admit they are a bit synthetic tasting.

Crosstown doughnuts are sublime. Grin

sst1234 · 03/03/2022 08:24

They are a dessert in themselves. No point comparing them to other donuts. Caramel Biscoff is quite nice.

mizzo · 03/03/2022 08:25

The ingredients list is hardly surprising, doughnuts don't grown on trees!
I have maybe one or two a year so can't get too worked up about it.

I don't like the hot ones much, they're too claggy and oily, DH and the DC love them.
I like a jam doughnut with proper sugar on not the powdery stuff,
I like a plain glazed Krispy Kreme and the lemon meringue one.
There's a company locally who do Krispy Kreme style filled doughnuts they're delicious but so expensive.

rainbowmash · 03/03/2022 08:25

They're gross!

They're in every big London train station, so they're mainly what tourists eat on their "big day out". Most other people won't touch them.

A branch recently opened in my home town, and it was kind of cringey to watch my friends rush to Instagram themselves showing off with the "fancy" doughnuts.

LangClegsInSpace · 03/03/2022 08:25

I've never tried one because I don't like the name.

KatherineJaneway · 03/03/2022 08:26

To me a doughnut is not a doughnut without jam in the middle.

Queenoftheashes · 03/03/2022 08:26

I agree, Krispy Kremes are the most unpleasant doughnut I’ve tried. They are really disappointing and leave a weird taste. I love crosstown but they are a stupid price for a doughnut. I do occasionally have one. I also like the coop jam ones. It’s about a pound for 5 and they are accidentally vegan so I feel virtuous. Unfortunately I tend to eat them all on the six minute walk home.

museumum · 03/03/2022 08:27

I like the plain KK but ONLY straight from the KK shop in the hour or two after a fresh bake. That’s what people love.
Supermarket or train station stands with boxes of data old KK donuts are not the same in any way.
