To not understand the fuss about Krispy Kremes?

theqentity · 03/03/2022 07:50

Ok, so maybe not the fuss, but why are they everywhere and as popular as they are? My local Sainsburys started stocking them last year and they seem to be pretty popular there.

I like the occasional donut, particularly hot fresh ones when I go to the seaside. I had a pretty good glazed ring one from Morrisons the other day that hit the spot too.

Krispy Kreme feel like poor clones of doughnuts. The glazes are very shiny, granted, but the artificial flavourings in them, and the fillings, leave a sort of plasticky taste behind. I can't really bring myself to eat one of the 'Kreme' filled ones after reading the ingredients that go into it. I'd never even heard of 'diammonium phosphate' until I did a bit of internet digging.

They're also full of palm oil, both the donuts and the glazes.

Are we just eating them because they're everywhere? Or do we genuinely think they're the best?

They are dreadful. I worked somewhere that had one of their ‘gold tickets’ so we could get them everyday. I tried one and thought it was bleugh and took one for DS as I was going to collect him from school. He didn’t like them either!

Bland, weird texture - not a proper donut.

Whydoesthecatalwaysdothat · 03/03/2022 16:35

I like a proper English doughnut with jam in the middle.

Most American versions of things are generally crap; doughnuts, chocolate, chips.........

CadvanTheBard · 03/03/2022 16:36

My favourite ones are from Pippins, they do a rhubarb and custard one. It's amazing.

I don't like KK ones. Now you've posted the ingredients I won't buy them as treats for my dc again!

TimBoothseyes · 03/03/2022 16:56

I had one a few months ago. It was sold as a lemon one but after 2 mouthfuls I came to the conclusion that no actual lemons were harmed during the making of it. I doubt I shall be trying another of any flavour.

rosesarenaff · 03/03/2022 17:04

I like any doughnut Blush

HoneyItIsntGoodLuck · 03/03/2022 17:08

America’s not exactly known for its cuisine.

Any good food they do have has been imported in by immigrants.

Everything else is processed. I may be exaggerating slightly, but still ….

LOL, I think most people are saying there are so many other, better, donuts out there, aren’t they?

One of my local supermarkets has a bakery on site and their donuts blow KK out of the water on every metric - ingredients, size, texture, and of course flavour.

Gowithme · 03/03/2022 17:51

I like the traditional doughnut with jam in the middle and sugar on the outside, Krispy Kreme doughnuts are nasty.

drpet49 · 03/03/2022 17:53

Seaside doughnuts are disgusting and not even a proper doughnut

HoveringDonkeyofKnock · 03/03/2022 18:01

Completely a agree they’re horribly sweet overly artificial nasty manufactured tasting things.

miltonj · 03/03/2022 18:05

I think they're great. I like dunkin donuts too.

I think you've got to separate them away from real traditional donuts In your head to appreciate them. It's like a dominos pizza vs eating traditional Roman pizza, both are delicious, but they're very different things!

IcyWinterWonderland · 03/03/2022 18:06

I agree. They are so over-hyped.

Mooloolabababy · 03/03/2022 18:13

Ah now what you need is Project D. They are the best doughnuts ever! Think you can only get them in the midlands though.

Blackmagicqueen · 03/03/2022 18:37

They are nice enough but not worth the calories or price ticket. Their best ones are when the hot sign is on and you get a lovely hot one which is actually delicious! Supermarket doughnuts are always disappointingly dry and bread-y. Winchills doughnuts are far superior, wish they'd bring it to my area!

Blackmagicqueen · 03/03/2022 18:37

*Winchells

ThinWomansBrain · 03/03/2022 18:44

Not a huge fan (and I like most sweet things)

They were a big thing at an office I worked at a few years ago - regular boxes of the things. I dicovered an apricot jam one dusted with cinnamon that was OK.

Agree! Sugar rings from a food van are the best!
The one time I had KC that I liked it was a plain glaze, fresh out of the oven in Selfridges, Birmingham, now that was special.
But the ones in supermarkets are horrid overly sweet stodge

snocopops · 03/03/2022 19:44

*KK not KC
🙄

madmumofteens · 03/03/2022 22:25

Yip I agree I I really don't know what all the fuss is about and so expensive I bought 12 doughnuts from the co op for £3 to take into work and they were just as good and so much cheaper x

FatOaf · 03/03/2022 22:40

Oh God, they're horrible. And they're neither crispy nor creamy. Mind you, I don't like Planet Doughnut either.

theqentity · 04/03/2022 08:39

@Grinling

Can I be the first to say DOUGHnut?
Have you just nipped in front 1970 to say that? Donut is a perfectly acceptable spelling in 2021. Language evolves.

The best doughnut I ever had was from a van at a festival. The ring making part of the machine wasn’t working so they’d just thrown in lumps of batter. They had lots of drippy bits hanging off them which went all crispy. Then rolled in cinnamon sugar. Deconstructed doughnuts - great business idea!

52andblue · 04/03/2022 08:46

@DetailMouse

They are a masterclass in marketing and branding. They've managed to get toba place where a cheap product carries a premium price and is the market leader simply by telling us they're the most desirable.

This usbthe case with a lot of branded foodstuffs, especially the junky ones

Well said! @DetailMouse
