To not understand the fuss about Krispy Kremes?

theqentity · 03/03/2022 07:50

Ok, so maybe not the fuss, but why are they everywhere and as popular as they are? My local Sainsburys started stocking them last year and they seem to be pretty popular there.

I like the occasional donut, particularly hot fresh ones when I go to the seaside. I had a pretty good glazed ring one from Morrisons the other day that hit the spot too.

Krispy Kreme feel like poor clones of doughnuts. The glazes are very shiny, granted, but the artificial flavourings in them, and the fillings, leave a sort of plasticky taste behind. I can't really bring myself to eat one of the 'Kreme' filled ones after reading the ingredients that go into it. I'd never even heard of 'diammonium phosphate' until I did a bit of internet digging.

They're also full of palm oil, both the donuts and the glazes.

Are we just eating them because they're everywhere? Or do we genuinely think they're the best?

Have you just nipped in front 1970 to say that? Donut is a perfectly acceptable spelling in 2021. Language evolves.

It does indeed. However, doughnut doesn't seem to have evolved into donut in the UK - as the vast majority of the spelling of it on this thread confirms.

@drpet49

Seaside doughnuts are disgusting and not even a proper doughnut
I grew up in a seaside town and the pervasive smell of them turns my stomach. Nasty greasy things.

I've only once had a Krispy Kreme donut (it's a different beast to a jam doughnut so I'll stick with that spelling for them). Mid morning at a motorway services for brunch on the way to a wedding, it was filled with custard and had chocolate topping and nicely hit the spot to keep me going till the reception.

FourChimneys · 04/03/2022 08:58

It's just marketing and some people fall for it. Sugar, unethical fat and chemicals. No thanks.

Roominmyhouse · 04/03/2022 09:46

Ooh I love a Krispy Kreme. The lemon meringue pie one is delish.

RobinBlackbird · 04/03/2022 09:47

I'll rename them KrispyKreme DoNots.

Fridafever · 04/03/2022 09:54

I’m not a fan. I don’t understand why you’re bothered about the ingredients when you eat Morrisons doughnuts though - they won’t be any better.

Would you write 'kneading the do' when referring to bread making?

The etymology of doughnut is pretty obvious, seeing how they made from leavened dough.

Well, it’s 2022 and it can evolve right back to doughnut.

KittenKong · 04/03/2022 11:10

We used to call the weeny ones dognuts when I worked for the bank.

Now omelette is a word I have issues with the spelling of…

MillenialInDenial · 04/03/2022 12:27

Have to say the raspberry jam ones are lovely.
Don't like any of the others though.

Hear, hear!

I don’t know why people are turning up their noses at the chemicals, E numbers and preservatives — no one is pretending they’re the equivalent of a fresh, home-made Victoria sponge, they’re designed to be the confectionery equivalent of Pringles.

hedgehogger1 · 04/03/2022 12:47

No they're crap. And massively overpriced. I can only think the marketing team are geniuses.

Or needing the do?Grin

Youcunnyfunt · 04/03/2022 13:54

What did we have before Krispy Kreme were imported? There was some other big brand here (which I think was also American) in the noughties. Was it Dunkin or something like that?

Whatever it was, Krispy Kreme is not as nice as those.

I think there are two completely different foods with the same name, really. I love doughnuts that you get at the seaside, street food style. No icing, no glaze, no flavours. I also don't mind the traditional jam and custard doughnuts. But I really don't like these sweets with the holes in the middle and added flavours and icing and glazes etc. It's totally different - not necessarily bad but not to my taste at all! It's just a completely different snack, different ingredients, it's not even cooked in the same way.

MoonOnASpoon · 04/03/2022 14:05

I actually feel Ok with either spelling, and I'm usually quite a pedant.

Nobody is suggesting changing the word 'dough'. They're talking about donuts. I know what you're trying to do here but, like it or not, language changes and simplifies. I would happily write the sentence 'kneading the dough for the donuts' as it would be grammatically correct in 2022.

The online Cambridge Dictionary says 'doughnut' (US: also donut). The standard British English spelling is 'doughnut'. Obviously you can spell it 'donut' if you like. Just as you can spell 'colour' as 'color' or 'analogue' as 'analog' if you like.

MrsBerthaRochester · 04/03/2022 16:55

Yanbu they are horrible. Exdh queued for ages when one opened near us. Even the kids werent that impressed. I prefer a greggs custard filled one.

HoneyItIsntGoodLuck · 04/03/2022 18:21

I have to admit - I do feel somewhat unclean writing ‘donut’.

You just know it’s going to turn up in Wordle soon.

Zwellers · 04/03/2022 18:53

Is someone forcing you to eat them or something. If you don't like them fine that's your choice. I like them especially the chocolate custard and apple pie varieties. That's my choice. You don't get to dictate what I choose to eat.

HoneyItIsntGoodLuck · 04/03/2022 19:06

I think you’re taking it a little personally @Zwellers. Here: Cake

GettingStuffed · 04/03/2022 19:12

Tim Hortons has opened up near DD that get race reviews but I'm not keen on doughnuts although there used to be a shop in Cardiff that did amazing ones, I loved their black cherry I don't even like the look of Krispy Kreme

5zeds · 04/03/2022 19:19

The Kirklees were delicious but they don’t make them any more.
