To not understand the fuss about Krispy Kremes?

theqentity · 03/03/2022 07:50

Ok, so maybe not the fuss, but why are they everywhere and as popular as they are? My local Sainsburys started stocking them last year and they seem to be pretty popular there.

I like the occasional donut, particularly hot fresh ones when I go to the seaside. I had a pretty good glazed ring one from Morrisons the other day that hit the spot too.

Krispy Kreme feel like poor clones of doughnuts. The glazes are very shiny, granted, but the artificial flavourings in them, and the fillings, leave a sort of plasticky taste behind. I can't really bring myself to eat one of the 'Kreme' filled ones after reading the ingredients that go into it. I'd never even heard of 'diammonium phosphate' until I did a bit of internet digging.

They're also full of palm oil, both the donuts and the glazes.

Are we just eating them because they're everywhere? Or do we genuinely think they're the best?

I'm not overly fussed on the ingredients being 'bad' because I feel if you're having a doughnut that's kind of expected! But I don't enjoy the taste personally. They always look and smell amazing but I don't know, the taste for me never seems to match up. I prefer the supermarket custard ones, yum!

sst1234 · 03/03/2022 08:29

@rainbowmash

They're gross!

They're in every big London train station, so they're mainly what tourists eat on their "big day out". Most other people won't touch them.

A branch recently opened in my home town, and it was kind of cringey to watch my friends rush to Instagram themselves showing off with the "fancy" doughnuts.

Tourists from where? Up north? Believe it or not, advanced inventions like Krispy Crème have been around up north also for about 10-12 years. No one comes to London for Krispy Kreme.
Haus1234 · 03/03/2022 08:32

They used to be (20 years ago) a fun exotic (American!) treat you could only get at Selfridges where you could see them being made on the conveyor belt and they gave you a free hat when you bought a box. They’ve managed to retain some of their “cool American” image despite now being very readily available, like pop tarts, Marshmallow Fluff and new M&M flavours. No one is eating them for health reasons!

I actually really like the plain glazed ones though the elaborate flavoured ones are a bit much. I prefer Crosstown or Doughnut Time.

elementalprimary · 03/03/2022 08:32

Because they've been very cleverly and expensively marketed to create excitement and brand loyalty, and people like to buy into that kind of thing.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 03/03/2022 08:33

@lugeforlife

I love a doughnut but agree re KK. They are too 'nothing'. No substance.

For those Bristol based I loved a Pipkins doughnut. Stalls would pop up over city and other SW street food/farmers markets. Their custard doughnuts were incredible.

I'm sure it was an autocorrect but do you mean Pippins? Their doughnuts are amazing, they used to come into our office once a month and would sell out by 10am!
PumpkinCrumble · 03/03/2022 08:38

I really rate a Greggs ring donut.

Ohyesiam · 03/03/2022 08:38

You’re right op they are minging, and I have a very sweet tooth.
I tasted one when someone used to bring a tray of them to a hobby, it was filled with very sweet shaving foam. But everyone else loved them, so who knows.

TheKeatingFive · 03/03/2022 08:44

No one comes to London for Krispy Kreme.

😂

I like a fresh maple glaze, they're much better than other commercially produced ones. The filled options are a bit much for me.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 03/03/2022 08:47

They're tasteless.

MoonOnASpoon · 03/03/2022 08:50

Yes I remember 20 years ago when they were like rare unicorns and not easy to find and people would go on about how amazing they were. So when I eventually tried one I thought wtf? It’s just a pappy overly sweet bit of dough. The supermarket own brand 5 for £1 ones are nicer!

Echobelly · 03/03/2022 08:51

Yeah, I find them sickly and unpleasant. Give me a fresh jam doughnut any time!

Andoffwego · 03/03/2022 08:57

I like them but don’t eat them regularly. Maybe about 3 a year. I used to really like me that they did years ago which was filled with strawberry jam and had powdered icing sugar on the outside - really simple but tasted lovely. I had a Love Hearts one a couple of weeks ago. It tasted thoroughly synthetic and odd yet somehow marvellous.

I don’t like fresh doughnuts as they always taste too oily. I am a fan of a bog standard jam doughnut from a bakery occasionally though.

LightsoftheNorth · 03/03/2022 09:00

I don't like them either, bland and tasteless. Years ago Waitrose did some 'extra jam' donuts which were filled with proper raspberry jam with seeds rather than the strange tasteless jelly stuff most donuts have. Sadly they are no more so I make do now with any that have icing sugar rather than granulated sugar, which puts my teeth on edge.

LemonMuffins · 03/03/2022 09:03

DH loves a KK and hates a fresh sugary seaside doughnut Shock He loves cheap crap though and also enjoy Hersheys...

I am the complete reverse. My dream doughnut is custard filled and sugar coated. None of this glazed or powdered nonsense.

theqentity · 03/03/2022 09:05

@Myturnatlast

Donut snobbery, only on MN 🤣

I like Krispy Kremes and seaside donuts and traditional jam ones, they're not mutually exclusive you know?!

How is it snobbery when I said I prefer Morrisons ones?

Chocoqueen · 03/03/2022 09:05

I agree. My favourite doughnuts have always been, and always will be, the cheap 4 or 5 for a £1 jam ones you get from supermarket bakeries 🤣

Swonderful · 03/03/2022 09:07

Don't have the ones from the cabinet. I've seen teenagers picking them up and putting them back! Confused

Chesneyhawkes1 · 03/03/2022 09:12

I love them! Especially the chocolate dream cake and Biscoff ones.

And I don't care what's in them. They are tasty and I'm not eating them to be healthy. They are an occasional treat 🍩

Why on earth did they stop the maple glaze! It was the best one on the menu. Now it's all biscoff and 100 varieties of plastic-y chocolate
MintyGreenDream · 03/03/2022 09:12

I prefer dunkin donuts

OneTC · 03/03/2022 09:14

Even when they're freshly baked it's like they're off already. Fucking horrible things, never been a fan

Freshprincess · 03/03/2022 09:18

I love them.

I also love freshly made in a paper bag seaside donuts.

They’re two different beasts.

lobster12 · 03/03/2022 09:19

I love them but I only buy them as a treat for my birthday as I won't stop at one. Imo they are lighter and not heavy like other doughnuts. You can't beat the seaside fresh doughnuts though 😋

Yanbu. They are not doughnuts, they are quite nasty and the filled ones hurt my teeth.

Lidl do the best jam doughnuts 😋

Iamnotamermaid · 03/03/2022 09:27

I think they just appeal to different taste buds. They are an American brand so like I find Hershey's chocolates to be completely unpalatable, the same with Krispy Kremes.
