To not understand the fuss about Krispy Kremes?

theqentity · 03/03/2022 07:50

Ok, so maybe not the fuss, but why are they everywhere and as popular as they are? My local Sainsburys started stocking them last year and they seem to be pretty popular there.

I like the occasional donut, particularly hot fresh ones when I go to the seaside. I had a pretty good glazed ring one from Morrisons the other day that hit the spot too.

Krispy Kreme feel like poor clones of doughnuts. The glazes are very shiny, granted, but the artificial flavourings in them, and the fillings, leave a sort of plasticky taste behind. I can't really bring myself to eat one of the 'Kreme' filled ones after reading the ingredients that go into it. I'd never even heard of 'diammonium phosphate' until I did a bit of internet digging.

They're also full of palm oil, both the donuts and the glazes.

Are we just eating them because they're everywhere? Or do we genuinely think they're the best?

@mumsiedarlingrevolta

I would like to put myself forward as a candidate for the donut blind taste test...
Thank you for your service.
Fairislefandango · 03/03/2022 13:10

YANBU - they aren't very nice. I think you're probably kidding yourself if you think many other doughnuts are 'made of proper foods rather than the contents of a science lab' though. You said you liked Morrisons' ones - I think someone posted their ingredients list upthread and it wasn't a great improvement on KK! Pretty much all bought baked goods are full of artificial shit.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 03/03/2022 13:11

thank you @BigupPemberleyMassive.

Dedication like mine often goes unnoticed

Tsuni · 03/03/2022 13:12

My mum bought me some. I expected them to be disgusting and I was right.

VelvetChairGirl · 03/03/2022 13:14

I dont know anything about them other then they are expensive, I bought one for my son once and he was very excited, has declined having one again, so I guess that was his verdict on em, he's rather have a box of Hello Panda.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 03/03/2022 13:16

I am a cheap doughnut date. I don't like any of the iced/glazed/filled ones, whether from Krispy Kreme, supermarkets, or the ridiculously pretentious place in the Northern Quarter that my DH likes, which charges about £3.50 per doughnut.

I genuinely prefer the bags of four for a quid with either custard or jam.

SartresSoul · 03/03/2022 13:35

I totally agree, they’re plasticky and horrible.

SartresSoul · 03/03/2022 13:36

Should say I think Morrisons do the best doughnuts and they’re like 50p for 5.

Februarybluee · 03/03/2022 13:37

IMO they are poor quality at the supermarkets (in my case Tesco) but really good quality at the Krispy Kreme official stores and kiosks.

They're my favourite donut.

Grinling · 03/03/2022 14:07

Can I be the first to say DOUGHnut?

CourtRand · 03/03/2022 14:10

They're cheap with interesting flavours that manage to entice people as they walk by. That's about it I think.

Now Dunkin Donuts... they're good. Especially in Germany.

OvaHere · 03/03/2022 14:12

They're way too expensive for what they are. Greggs do a box of 4 which are very similar and much cheaper. They don't have the same range of flavours but on the odd occasion we have them as a treat at least nobody eats more than one.

juneybean · 03/03/2022 14:19

The last time I had a morrisons ring doughnut it was really oily and not very pleasant at all. I love the biscoff krispy kreme but only ever eat them when work buy them.

Missey85 · 03/03/2022 14:19

I don't like them either I'd rather a nice bag of hot jam donuts not sure how much they are in the UK but in Australia their very expensive and not worth the money

tillytoodles1 · 03/03/2022 14:21

I've only tried them once. I bought a box from Tesco and wasn't impressed.

MagentaRocks · 03/03/2022 14:22

@hugr

They don't taste nice though. They taste like they were cloned, badly.

Surely you have to understand that, with them being everywhere and very popular, that you are likely in the minority?

This, obviously they do taste nice to people or they wouldn’t be so popular. You just don’t like them. I like them, I find the actual doughnut soft and fresh. But they are only something I have very occasionally and wouldn’t class them as a favourite food.
Satingreenshutters · 03/03/2022 14:42

I agree, I don't get the hype. Only tried the glazed ones mind you but they were sickly sweet and kind of wet. Ugh. No.

Donut is a valid spelling aswell. Google it.
Elphame · 03/03/2022 16:09

I was so disappointed in the one I had shortly after they became available in the UK.

What on earth do people see in them? Unpleasant soggy texture and taste of nothing but sugar.

Never been tempted since.

Grinling · 03/03/2022 16:10

It's the 'niteclub' of confectionery.

Grinling · 03/03/2022 16:10

Sorry, that was to @Thatsplentyjack.

ColdShouldersWarmTummy · 03/03/2022 16:12

I find them really dry and kind of "bready". Much prefer Tesco jam donuts

thisplaceisweird · 03/03/2022 16:16

To me its the same difference between and McDonalds and a proper burger cooked by a chef in a nice restaurant.

Yes freshly cooked, nice quality ingredient stuff is nice, but sometimes you want 1) convenience 2) cheap 3) plastic shit

gunnersgold · 03/03/2022 16:24

I don't eat them because I have to watch my weight but I would if I could ! I don't like the beach ones , they taste like oil !
