To not understand the fuss about Krispy Kremes?

theqentity · 03/03/2022 07:50

Ok, so maybe not the fuss, but why are they everywhere and as popular as they are? My local Sainsburys started stocking them last year and they seem to be pretty popular there.

I like the occasional donut, particularly hot fresh ones when I go to the seaside. I had a pretty good glazed ring one from Morrisons the other day that hit the spot too.

Krispy Kreme feel like poor clones of doughnuts. The glazes are very shiny, granted, but the artificial flavourings in them, and the fillings, leave a sort of plasticky taste behind. I can't really bring myself to eat one of the 'Kreme' filled ones after reading the ingredients that go into it. I'd never even heard of 'diammonium phosphate' until I did a bit of internet digging.

They're also full of palm oil, both the donuts and the glazes.

Are we just eating them because they're everywhere? Or do we genuinely think they're the best?

Agree, I had one once and it was crap.
Proper, fresh ones from a market/van with sugar and cinnamon however - mmmm Smile

Bearsbearsbears40 · 03/03/2022 07:53

I agree they can be a bit plasticky. I prefer Planet Doughnut that has a stand at the market we go to. But only occasionally as the doughnuts are huge.

HoppingPavlova · 03/03/2022 07:53

I’m with you, they taste odd. Occasionally I enjoy a freshly made one from a donut stand, the type that any extras need to be thrown out at end of day as they go stale overnight. Krispy Kreme’s taste like the McDonalds of donuts in comparison.

KindlyKanga · 03/03/2022 07:54

They are a completely different animal to proper doughnuts

LubaLuca · 03/03/2022 07:54

I had one years ago when they were new, I think I bought it in a big shopping mall. It was nice enough, and I'm not a huge fan of doughnuts generally.

They've probably gone the same way as Thornton's chocolate if they're now sold everywhere.

Roselilly36 · 03/03/2022 07:54

I agree not sure what the fuss is about either, our DS’ l loves them though, so we have them delivered here regularly.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 03/03/2022 07:54

I'm not a fan of the fresh ones at seaside as I find them too oily. I've recently discovered Dough Boy and I'll treat myself on rare occasions to one of the sprinkle ones.

BeHappy91818 · 03/03/2022 07:55

I think people eat them because they like them.
I think they are nice and I buy them for the kids sometimes.
My kids won’t eat the ones with jam/custard in and I don’t like plain ring ones with sugar on.
Each to their own.

ClariceQuiff · 03/03/2022 07:55

I only like plain, hot, ring donuts. I don't want jam or icing on my donut.

Bagelsandbrie · 03/03/2022 07:55

If you’re worried about what’s in them ingredient wise you’re missing the point. They’re just really nice doughnuts. They taste nice. That’s it.

When I lived in London you could get pretty good cakes and doughnuts just about everywhere, lots of nice independent bakeries and even the supermarket ones weren’t too bad. Now I’ve moved more rurally and it’s hard to get a decent sugar fix. I know if somewhere sells a Krispy K that the quality and standard will be the same everywhere, its a bit like a McDonald’s for doughnuts.

KylieCharlene · 03/03/2022 07:56

We're paying for the brand.
The donuts aren't great.

nearlyspringyay · 03/03/2022 07:56

They're so sweet they make my teeth hurt. The kids like them but only the original glazed.

I like a jam doughnut from our local bakery.

theqentity · 03/03/2022 07:56

I have a hierarchy of preference and plain hot ring donuts are right at the top.

It’s a completely different donut to a ‘proper’ donut. I would never have a sugar ring KK because it wouldn’t be the same as a donut from a bakery or the seaside.

People have Krispy Kremes because of the American style glazing or the sugary toppings and fillings- which I get isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

I love the strawberry cream one- I usually turn my nose up at anything fruit flavoured, but it is wonderful.

Enko · 03/03/2022 07:59

U really dislike Morrisons donuts find them dry and overly sugary so I don't buy them.

At times I like a KK Glazed but indont go for the filled ones as they are not my thing.

Now give me a trip to an Ole and Steen and I can gorge.. my friend will come along but hals half a piece as thats all she can manage there. When we go to KK she has 2.

Its all about taste.

WellTidy · 03/03/2022 08:00

The only KK I like is the chocolate dream cake, which has chocolate icing (not a glaze) and is filled with chocolate cream (not a custard)

It is the bees knees and well worth the 358 calories that it is

The mother of all donuts through, for me, is crosstown. They do a rhubarb and rose one and it is pure heaven. Pricey though.

I love them but only the ring ones the filled are just too sickly . The glazed and chocolate sprinkle ones are delicious 😋

hugr · 03/03/2022 08:04

They don't taste nice though. They taste like they were cloned, badly.

Surely you have to understand that, with them being everywhere and very popular, that you are likely in the minority?

Bagelsandbrie · 03/03/2022 08:04

If you’re into healthy eating maybe KK doughnuts aren’t for you…? Grin

knittingaddict · 03/03/2022 08:04

I actively dislike like them. The texture is weird and it feels and tastes like it's completely artificial. I don't understand the appeal at all.

DetailMouse · 03/03/2022 08:05

They are a masterclass in marketing and branding. They've managed to get toba place where a cheap product carries a premium price and is the market leader simply by telling us they're the most desirable.

This usbthe case with a lot of branded foodstuffs, especially the junky ones

I'm not, I just like food to be made with other food items, not the contents of a science lab.

I don't think it's about the taste. I bet if you blind tested them alongside other doughnuts they would lose every time.
