What the hell was Liz Truss thinking!!?

So yesterday in a few interviews Liz Truss said she would support people going to fight in Ukraine. I couldn't believe it when i was watching her saying it, knowing Putins threats. This morning i've heard that apparently Putin has said that her comments are the reason he put his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. So now it feels like if he was to attack any other country it would be the UK as he would use her comments as an excuse by saying the UK is threatening his country and people by letting people go and fight against the Russian army. Honestly how could she be that stupid!!

Here is an article on it.

apparently it is also illegal for Brits to go & fight in Ukraine, so good on her for encouraging illegal actions.

Fastforwardtospring · 28/02/2022 11:47

It’s unbelievable, but my thoughts on this is we’re part of NATO, so we don’t get involved until attack on NATO country so why would you let our civilians go and sign up?

anniegun · 28/02/2022 11:48

I doubt Putin is taking any more notice of Liz Truss's vapid ramblings than the rest of us.

SamphiretheStickerist · 28/02/2022 11:48

You mean nobody can say anything about anything because one megalomaniac will twist it takes his own ends?

You have fallen for his PR. You could choose to see him for what he is and, even if only in your head, refuse to give him the omnipotence he claims. Because that's what you are doing now, what many journalists are doing.

If everyone felt, spoke and acted that way we would live in an incredibly different world.

Googlecanthelpme · 28/02/2022 11:48

Where did you hear that it was specifically her comments that caused him to put his weapons on alert? From opinion or from reputable source?

Leftbutcameback · 28/02/2022 11:49

She’s an idiot. Ignore everything she says and problem solved!

Normando91 · 28/02/2022 11:50

She needs to sit down and shut the hell up. She could have worded what she was saying so much better than “we support”!!

battenburgHatday · 28/02/2022 11:50

She should retract her statement and apologise to him

He is latching onto anything to use as justification so we need to remove anything he can twist and use

DoctorSnortles · 28/02/2022 11:53

Yeah, I think this actually needs an apology and a public correction.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/02/2022 11:55

He is latching onto anything to use as justification so we need to remove anything he can twist and use.

That would be impossible. He will twist anything and in the absence of something to twist, will lie. We should not self censor for fear of upsetting the twat.

sadpapercourtesan · 28/02/2022 11:56

It was really fucking weird to hear her say that. The British volunteers who went to fight with the Kurds against ISIS were dragged through the courts on terrorism charges, harassed by Special Branch in their own homes, had their bank accounts frozen and passports/tech seized for months etc.

TicTacHoh · 28/02/2022 11:57

I doubt Putin is the slightest bit influenced by Liz Truss...

Ablababla · 28/02/2022 11:58

I think she was incredibly stupid and the government needs to correct her position. But It’s clearly a pathetic excuse for Putin to use these comments in this way (if he has) and in no way would he consider it a serious threat.

blubberyboo · 28/02/2022 12:01

I think the way she said it was potentially dangerous and she should have stopped at “people make decisions for themselves” without actually going on to say that she would support it. She has got swept up in the passion but not thinking.

some guy …with some sort of military background or experience or reporting on war zones I can’t remember his name…said this on BBC that to have untrained civilians bailing into a war zone has been seen before and never ends well. I suppose he means high deaths, shooting people on his own side by accident, open to terrorist prosecutions etc.
He said it would be far better those with medical experience or could help humanitarian aid go to assist.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/02/2022 12:02

As fucking if Putin gives a rat's ass about a handful of Brits who ignore the legalities around fighting against a country we are not at war with...like that's the fucking tipping point. Hang on, the whole of the world is slowly isolating us, stopping our flights, tanking the currency, arming the Ukraine to the teeth with weaponry...but three lads from Hull have donned a back pack and are making their way to fight...now we're really angry.

VladmirsPoutine · 28/02/2022 12:02

Does anyone else think her 'media training' has gotten completely out of hand? I mean her tone and diction - nobody speaks like that - it screams media training to sound authoritative and 'in control' but she sounds like a toy robot whose batteries are on their last legs Confused

Justtoshare · 28/02/2022 12:03

My concern is it seemed like encouraging idealistic British teenage boys to go and get themselves killed unnecessarily.....does she have any sons?.....Nope thought not...just daughters.

Kilimanjaro97 · 28/02/2022 12:04

Whole series of government ministers have been correcting what Truss said. She clearly got this wrong.

On one level I have some sympathy with her because journalists today seem focussed on the “gotcha” kind of interview where they get a politician to say something controversial irrespective of whether that is actually government policy.

On another, she is experienced, sees herself as a potential leadership candidate and is discussing serious issues so she should not fall into these traps.

But the notion that Putin was driven to put his nuclear forces on alert because of what Truss (who her???) said is laughable - like most of the Guardian’s coverage of most issues.

Sadless · 28/02/2022 12:06

Didn't the people who went to fight against isis in Turkey get in trouble for doing that. Its a stupid thing to suggest from this stupid government might as well tell them to go commit suicide.

Of course he is. She should not be making inflammatory comments and should resign.

What she said was unforgivable for god's sake, no other foreign minister has said this!

Its irrelevant if Putin is using this , it simply shows how incredibly inept this government is.

With that clown in number 10 and the lack of quality in cabinet, I fear for all of us....

Yes incredibly stupid indeed. She definitely needs to retract her statement as what she's saying isn't even legal. She's telling Putin she's happy for people in the UK to fight alongside Ukraine, against him and also to do so illegally. Some people may think Putin is all talk and that's fine to hage that opinion ofcourse, do you really want to risk finding out though? I know i don't! Noone really knows what he will do and what he's capable of as he's getting older now, facing his own mortality and maybe he doesn't feel like he's got anything to lose.
