What the hell was Liz Truss thinking!!?

So yesterday in a few interviews Liz Truss said she would support people going to fight in Ukraine. I couldn't believe it when i was watching her saying it, knowing Putins threats. This morning i've heard that apparently Putin has said that her comments are the reason he put his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. So now it feels like if he was to attack any other country it would be the UK as he would use her comments as an excuse by saying the UK is threatening his country and people by letting people go and fight against the Russian army. Honestly how could she be that stupid!!

Liz Truss thinking? Haha. No.

FatOaf · 28/02/2022 12:50

As others have said, Liz Truss is an imbecile. It is disgraceful that the media report anything she says; ditto ABdP Johnson and all the liars & sycophants he surrounds himself with (while accepting large monetary donations from spouses and other close associates of Russian oligarchs).

If anyone does go to Ukraine to fight, presumably Truss's fellow slimeball Priti Patel will revoke their British citizenship.

Given that the ultra-right-wing maniacs who pull Johnson's strings are far more likely to be on Putin's side than on Ukraine's (like their pied piper Nigel Farage and their deity Donald Trump), I don't think Johnson & his band of worthless political detritus will continue to support Ukraine for very long.

Plexie · 28/02/2022 12:50

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the posters who think Putin has escalated his threat level purely on the basis of a comment by Liz Truss saying she would be supportive of volunteers wishing to fight for Ukraine. Nevermind the escalating international sanctions, threat of being kicked off the Swift payment network, UN resolution, countries sending military hardware - oh no, he doesn't feel threatened by any of that. But Liz Truss declaring on Sunday morning television that she would be supportive of a few volunteers going to fight and he's put his nuclear arsenal on high alert. Yeah, right Hmm

Oh and if you actually read The Guardian article, it's not necessarily illegal to fight abroad. It's not the same as ISIS fighters because they were fighting against a government, whereas in Ukraine people would be fighting to support the government. And volunteers who went to Spain during their civil war weren't prosecuted under the Foreign Enlistment Act.

EerieSilence · 28/02/2022 12:50

I can't believe the amount of those on this forum who are crapping their pants when thinking about Putin or are ready to lick his arse.
On the other side, now I perfectly understand how Munich 1938 could have happened.
Brits are always ready to sell the whole world as long as it's not concerning them directly. The fact that an independent state is being attacked and people who just week ago lived their normal lives are now either fleeing, dying or fighting - who cares as long as we have our nice scone with clotted cream and jam with our tea.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 12:51

This is precisely what the Kremlin wants you to do...

They are sowing friction, division and they will try and fracture the allies unity the best way they can.

No one in their right mind threatens another country with nuclear war on the back of a minister saying people can go and fight if they want to. That is just insane overreaction!!

Was it well advised, maybe not, but honestly they will be enjoying this division very much - so keep playing into their hands folks.

Iggly · 28/02/2022 12:52

Liz Truss like most of that cabinet are out of their depth. This sort of thing shows why.

FatOaf · 28/02/2022 12:53

And i am sure there is a lot going on behind the scenes to help the ukraine that we are not actually aware of .

Please stop referring to "The Ukraine". It is a sovereign nation: Ukraine. "The Ukraine" is how the region was classified by the Romanov and Soviet empires. It's only legitimate to call it that if you believe it is righfully part of the Russian empire.

Zilla1 · 28/02/2022 12:54

How many times did Mrs Thatcher apologise and retract her opinions? She was obviously channelling her inner PM that if she wishes really hard and carries on with photo opportunities might become her outer PM

baroqueandblue · 28/02/2022 12:54

Remember, the first casualty in war is truth

Going by our government's complete estrangement from anything resembling truth, it has been a pretty long war already then Hmm

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 12:56

Would you prefer Corbyn to be out there with his great idea of 'chatting' to the nice chaps in the tanks and talk them down with a cup of tea? Or sign a letter to say you disagree that will really work, why don't we suggest that to the Ukrainians or his final and most outstanding solution: to take us out of Nato altogether.

Yeah, I thought not. Well that was the choice!

PearlclutchersInc · 28/02/2022 12:56

If you believe that's the reason Putin did that, you're very naive. Any spurious comment by anyone would have egged him on.

Yes, this basically. Of course she's an idiot, but if you think that her comment is why the UK is a 'target' then you haven't been paying attention.

Did someone seriously suggest she should apologise to Vladimir Putin?!

BirdOnTheWire · 28/02/2022 12:57

The young men who will do this were not waiting for her permission they were already planning to go or in fact already there.

iloveeverykindofcat · 28/02/2022 12:58

Liz Truss has a room-temperature IQ like most of this cabinet, but she's not responsible for Putin's "reasons". I also wish she'd stop talking, because she's an embarassment, but I don't think her comments have actively made the situation more dangerous than it already is.

52andblue · 28/02/2022 12:59

I think that Truss, like the rest of the Cabinet & our current PM tend to operate in knee jerk soundbites, running just ahead of 'public opinion'.
Hence foolish statements about 'UK people going to fight in Ukraine'
In fact, her words, will make no actual difference but can be quoted.

I don't know if Putin is 'mad' but he appears to be a Narcissist.
It is unwise to give such a character any 'ammunition at all.
It is better for it to be Putin vs Rest of World if at all possible.
It is SO rare for the Rest of the (western) World to be uniting against a tyrant in this way. This unity must be preserved & presented as such.

I think it would be wise for Truss to clarify her statement IF Putin is really referring to it, directly or by inference. He is sabre rattling.

LizDoingTheCanCan · 28/02/2022 12:59

They are sowing friction, division and they will try and fracture the allies unity the best way they can.

Indeed, it is what the Conservatives have done for decades.

Zilla1 · 28/02/2022 12:59

@FatOaf I understand your point and I know the use of the definite article is officially deprecated by Ukraine though it was one of the country names traditionally used with the definite article like the United States, the UK, the Republic of Ireland and so on and usage should change but tying that traditional usage with some deliberate belief in non-sovereignty might be a stretch.

Iggly · 28/02/2022 12:59

What is it with people frothing over Corbyn? He’s gone. Long gone.

Corbyn at least had the measure of Putin years ago.

Our government has made us outsiders. Anything we do or say is just irrelevant. The big boys of the EU and the USA are dealing with it and it’s coincidental if we say anything which is actioned.

52andblue · 28/02/2022 13:00

sorry badly put.
Putin is doing much more than 'sabre rattling' in Ukraine.
But its unwise to make foolish statements he can latch onto for more.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/02/2022 13:02

@BirdOnTheWire

The young men who will do this were not waiting for her permission they were already planning to go or in fact already there.
I imagine there isn't more than a silver of overlap on a Venn diagram between volunteers itching to join a war and those watching The Sunday Morning Show, let alone any who were finally convinced to take up arms on permission from Liz Truss.
Gizacluethen · 28/02/2022 13:02

Yeah I'd really rather we not have a target on our backs.
Obviously I'm sympathetic for the Ukrainians, doesn't mean I also want my family in harms way.

LizDoingTheCanCan · 28/02/2022 13:02

@Keepyourheadscrewedon Yes, I'd rather a diplomat than a blithering idiot, every single time. I imagine Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe feels the same.

Ohyesiam · 28/02/2022 13:04

Well hopefully this will force her resignation.

Binjob118 · 28/02/2022 13:09

Yeah, I thought not. Well that was the choice!

Corbyn was denouncing Putin and his human rights abuses as far back as 2003. I would certainly prefer him to be in charge now compared to these Kremlin funded clowns!?
Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 13:09

Taking such comments and deliberately or stupidly misunderstanding them is not a worthy or reasonable reason to threaten nuclear strikes, ffs stop being so ridiculous! You sound as crazy as Putin.

Have you even stopped to consider for a moment, that Putin may be looking for a reason to elevate this conflict into an even bigger one? Have you really considered that he might start using any comments as an opportunity to make things even worse?

He is fucked anyway now, so he hasn't much to lose by blowing up the west whilst he is at it. It is already a full on disaster for him. He increasingly looks to me like he is a man that has lost the family silver at the casino and has decided to burn the place down rather than make a quiet exit.
