What the hell was Liz Truss thinking!!?

So yesterday in a few interviews Liz Truss said she would support people going to fight in Ukraine. I couldn't believe it when i was watching her saying it, knowing Putins threats. This morning i've heard that apparently Putin has said that her comments are the reason he put his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. So now it feels like if he was to attack any other country it would be the UK as he would use her comments as an excuse by saying the UK is threatening his country and people by letting people go and fight against the Russian army. Honestly how could she be that stupid!!

@Googlecanthelpme

Where did you hear that it was specifically her comments that caused him to put his weapons on alert? From opinion or from reputable source?
It was this: "We consider such statements absolutely unacceptable. I will not name the authors of these statements, although it was the British foreign secretary."

Which is frankly hilarious and will aid Truss's campaign for PM no end.

I don't think it will make UK more of a target but it's breathtaking stupidity from a Foreign Secretary. She's encouraging people to travel there against Foreign Office advice, they would be risking their lives in a foreign country and would get no assistance from UK Government. Apparently people doing similar to defend Syria faced terrorism charges when they tried to return.

Every time I see a photo of her next to a flag staring vacantly into the distance or dressed up as a soldier I get a bit more enraged. I hope they are having the opposite effect to what she intended.

I'm baffled by the childish understanding of geopolitics and nuclear war on this thread and indeed across the site.

If one NATO country gets nuked they all do, at the same time. It doesn't matter who provoked said nuking. This is especially true for the nuclear powers (of which we are one) in NATO.

That is the entire point of NATO.

TheDogsEyebrows · 28/02/2022 13:12

@Keepyourheadscrewedon

This is precisely what the Kremlin wants you to do...

They are sowing friction, division and they will try and fracture the allies unity the best way they can.

No one in their right mind threatens another country with nuclear war on the back of a minister saying people can go and fight if they want to. That is just insane overreaction!!

Was it well advised, maybe not, but honestly they will be enjoying this division very much - so keep playing into their hands folks.

This.

He's seen a fracture between us and the EU/US and is trying to crowbar it open.

I have zero time for the current government but F**k Dobby the War Prick if he thinks he's going to have me blaming Truss for him threatening to end the world.

Jaxhog · 28/02/2022 13:13

@Infinitemoon

doubt Putin is the slightest bit influenced by Liz Truss...

Of course he is. She should not be making inflammatory comments and should resign.

Putin takes no notice of ANYONE! He just uses comments as an excuse to do what he was going to do anyway.

Seconded.

jessy100 · 28/02/2022 13:14

Truss is as thick as shit! She was a laughing stock recently when she met members of the EU in relation to the northern n Ireland protocol. She is an utter embarrassment like the rest of the cabinet.

TennisQueen · 28/02/2022 13:17

Truss's comment was thick as pig shit.

Weeks ago Truss's Russian counterpart made his feelings very clear on her capability for the role, and he was spot on. This comment about her effect on proceedings is a very loud message to Johnson to get rid and replace her with someone who deserves to be taken seriously.

We all know Johnson has cloth ears, so whether or not he will hear what's blowing in the wind is anyone's guess at this stage. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Infinitemoon · 28/02/2022 13:19

Maybe, but why take the risk? It is reckless. It is also absurd to encourage people to go and shoot Russian men.

Bunnyfuller · 28/02/2022 13:20

Yes, Putin said any nation that interferes and consequences would be immediate. So Liz Truss thinks it doesn’t count if the brits that go over aren’t actually in the Armed Forces. Typical Tory, wants to do it on the cheap!

Nope. Just: some women are sometimes fallible.

Truss is one of those women and no amount of apologising for her in the name of the sisterhood will change the fact.

campion · 28/02/2022 13:21

Foreign Secretary is supposed to be one of the three Great Offices of State. I know they've been fishing in a very shallow pond lately (Raab, Johnson), but if she's fanning the flames in a very unpredictable conflict then we're in trouble.

She's not as bright as she thinks she is.

@AnnPerkins
'Staring vacantly' is a very apt description of her.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 28/02/2022 13:22

I am sure Putin (with his two wives and a cabinet full of men) is not a misogynist though rishi, its "Truss she is thick as pig"shit, it can't be anything to do with the Kremlin playing games and being sexist to boot. They spoke to her in the most disgraceful way during her visit to Russia, so we can't be surprised that they are now at a it again.

Bully boys playing games to create division, so easy when they have audience that have the critical thinking skills of an average five year old. They must be sitting back and enjoying the show of stupidity.

Arewethebadguys · 28/02/2022 13:23

You're hysterical. Putin neither knows nor cares what Liz says. Careful he doesn't see this thread or he'll be blaming you next!

Liz is the British Foreign Secretary. I assure you, Putin and his ministers know exactly what she has said!

It was a serious gaffe and she needs to retract it.

Imabouttoexplode · 28/02/2022 13:25

We all know that she's a blithering idiot but if it's presented to Putin as the right hand woman to the UK Prime Minister is encouraging UK nationals to bodily go to the Ukraine to fight, then I can very easily see how that would be badly received and could whip things up even further. To us, she's an inconsequential mosquito but to Russia, she is a senior member of the UK government. At this point, no one should be allowed to be a loose cannon and shoot from the hip. Communications need to be managed, orchestrated and unified and if I was PM (😀) and a member of my team said something off-message like that, they'd be gone.

TimeToMakeACupofTea · 28/02/2022 13:27

I’m not going to name them because I’m above all that. Rather, I’m going to give you their exact job title.

TennisQueen · 28/02/2022 13:28

@Keepyourheadscrewedon

And you take one too tennis You are doing their job for them well done you [slow clap]
You are being very silly. Her comment was stupid, undiplomatic und unnecessarily inflaming. Yes I think that's pretty thick and extremely worrying behaviour.

Please don't credit Liz Truss with the power to move Putin. He is blaming everyone but himself and using Truss as an an excuse.

No one needs to apologise to Putin he wants everyone to bow to him.

Earlier this month Putin called Liz Truss 'stupid' and 'incompetent' and now suddenly she is responsible for Putin's attacks on Ukraine??

yeah that makes sense.

Putin's days are numbered.

secular111 · 28/02/2022 13:29

@Infinitemoon

Of course he is. She should not be making inflammatory comments and should resign.

Wow. Imagine what would have happened if Truss had something really inflammatory? Like she preferred Snickers over Mars bars? Immediate nuclear strikes and a Nuclear Winter engulfing Russia and Western Europe within minutes.

The idea that Liz Truss has the ear of Putin is of course laughable. But if some are willing to believe it, then I guess the best we can do is just smile. That Russian strategic policy is determined by whatever Liz Truss says would be a source of mirth if the subject wasn't so serious. I'm sure there would be something that someone, anyone at anytime would say or write that the Russian regime would try to use to blame there latest threat on. This one,, whereby Truss mutters something to allegedly encourage some chaps from Britain to go to The Ukraine to help the fight reveals the utter fear Putin has for Brit's, and certainly Brits fighting together with Ukrainians, but little more. It terrified the Russians so much they had to place their nuclear forces on alert. That's genuine fear.

What is obvious is that any future negotiations, perhaps when the reparations that Russia will have to pay are being calculated, have to involve Liz Truss. No-way can she be excluded from any diplomatic activity as it is obvious that her influence is proven to be significant already.

Me neither, I'm not that stupid. People need to pull themselves together.
