What the hell was Liz Truss thinking!!?

So yesterday in a few interviews Liz Truss said she would support people going to fight in Ukraine. I couldn't believe it when i was watching her saying it, knowing Putins threats. This morning i've heard that apparently Putin has said that her comments are the reason he put his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. So now it feels like if he was to attack any other country it would be the UK as he would use her comments as an excuse by saying the UK is threatening his country and people by letting people go and fight against the Russian army. Honestly how could she be that stupid!!

Exactly 75 years on from the Spanish Civil War, it seems the International Brigades might be back. I never thought I’d be typing those words…. The world really has turned upside down so quickly.

It's heartbreaking what's going on, i can only begin to imagine the pain and suffering of those living and fighting in Ukraine. As you say, they world has been turned upside down in the blink of an eye and so many lives directly impacted by this war. We can only hope that it ends sooner rather than later, if we don't have hope what do we have......peace will prevail.

Was Truss also responsible for Putin threatening Sweden and Finland with: "serious military and political repercussions”?
It wasn't anything to do with her supporting fighters going over there. It was to do with her warning that this could turn into a NATO-Russian conflict. I agree with her that it could, and as Foreign Secretary, she was right to warn it.

I have just seen Truss' plea to the UN reported in the FT and I really do think she is dangerous actually.

Instead of asking the UN to step in and be prepared to put peace corps in Ukraine if a ceasefire is negotiated, and showing some awareness of the complexities in dealing with the fallout short term and long term, which will be the case when (I am trying to stay positive so I say when not if) a ceasefire is negotiated, she is full of bombastic warcontinuing speeches about how the UN must declare this that and the other, none of which will actually help bring an end to the conflict or plan for the fallout short term or long term.

I am not sure she has a single clue what has been going on in the region in the past and I think she should have read up on it all before issuing statements. A Foreign Sec who displays knowledge and awareness would have so much more clout.

Both she and Johnson could be doing so much better at being world leaders imo.

And also, the judgement for the people involved here is surely firmly the remit of international law, not the foreign secretary of the UK, surely?

You're right, i've got alot going on and stressed out but that's no excuse really. I will not be responding anymore, unless it's to discuss the issues on the thread. There will always be people who agree and disagree ofcourse, i just think we should give our opinions kindly. Lets keep it friendly as it's easy to be rude anonymously on here but would we really speak like that to a stranger stood in front if us, probably not......well i hope not.

I've not seen that but i will look it up later and see what was said. I think hope and positivity is the only thing we can do. To hear that a ceasefire had been negotiated would be a relief. I did write this thread as i admit i was panicking about what might happen to the UK, i have since calmed down alot

They know Liz Truss is seen as a bit of a joke in the UK and used that to their advantage.

You don't need to be cowed to Putin to realise that Truss has been promoted way above her capabilities. But she may find some comfort in knowing the same can be said of many of her front bench peers.

People voted for Boris Johnson because they thought he was funny and a ‘lad’ - not because he was competent.

Boris Johnson surrounded himself with loyal idiots, instead of competent intelligent people who might challenge him for the top job.

So now we have a government full of Ministers who simply aren’t up to the challenges of the job. Liz Truss is not bright enough to be Foreign Secretary, it’s a job that requires a high level of political awareness and diplomacy plus intelligence and an awareness of psychology.

(Not making a party political point, Labour don’t seem to have many bright people either, and don’t even get me started on Corbyn).

This is the result of decades of the country’s most intelligent people avoiding political careers because of the way they’re hounded by the press and underpaid when compared to business career paths.

Seems I'm the only one posting here.😳 just wanted to say Lyse Doucet is utterly awesome, watching her commentary on beeb. She's always in the thick of things, fearless, amazing woman!

I didn't see Viking's post that was deleted, but basing an assumption on previous comments, I'd think it possible to be less about what Viking said, and more about how they said it.

Boris Johnson has handled the Ukraine crisis very well. Did you see Question Time last week? Several members of the panel acknowledged his competence on Ukraine even though they had been critical in the past: The Polish MEP (who had previously been Poland's Minister of Defence) said Boris' decision to send anti--tank weapons to Ukraine at the beginning of the year was 'brave and timely' ... the woman from the Economist said Boris' speech to the Munich Security conference was good...
