What the hell was Liz Truss thinking!!?

So yesterday in a few interviews Liz Truss said she would support people going to fight in Ukraine. I couldn't believe it when i was watching her saying it, knowing Putins threats. This morning i've heard that apparently Putin has said that her comments are the reason he put his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. So now it feels like if he was to attack any other country it would be the UK as he would use her comments as an excuse by saying the UK is threatening his country and people by letting people go and fight against the Russian army. Honestly how could she be that stupid!!

"There had been statements by various representatives at various levels about possible conflict situations and even collisions and clashes between Nato and the Russian Federation," said Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Vladimir Putin.
"We consider such statements absolutely unacceptable. I will not name the authors of these statements, although it was the British foreign secretary."

Love this from the article, hmmmm someone who's the British Foreign Secretary but must remain unnamed, who could it possibly be???

I doubt Putin is taking any more notice of Liz Truss's vapid ramblings than the rest of us.

I suppose it moves attention away from her being seen in photos with the Russian wife of the biggest Russian donor to the Tory Party whilst strenuously denying on TV that any non Brit had donated more than a fiver to the Tory Party because to do so would be illegal.

Putin would use anything as an excuse but frankly, Liz Truss is an idiot encouraging people to go to Ukraine from the UK. God help us all if she becomes PM in the future.

She should retract her statement and apologise to him

Apologise to who? Putin? The ex-KGB dictator who is annexing bits of Europe to reunite the Soviet union?

If Unkranian citizens want to return then they can, the UK are not going to stop them, and unlike people who went to Syria they will be able to return easily to the UK.

Encouraging anyone to go fight in Ukraine is utterly irresponsible (purely from a human point of view) but anyone who cares to google truss and cheese will see she has taken idiocy to new levels long before now.

The problem is that Johnson packed his cabinet with weak, inexperienced people because they had to be on board with Brexit (even if they opposed it in the campaign). Surprisingly enough, most competent Tories opposed Brexit because it is stupid.

Then ministers are whisked about in reshuffles so they never get the chance to stay long. Ministers should be chosen due to actual knowledge and competence in that area, not being prepared to do whatever Johnson tells them. Truss doesn't know the law on this because she's only been in the role ten minutes and lacks experience. Plus frankly she doesn't think it's very important, she's only in it for PR photo opportunities because she thinks she's in with a shot for leadership.

She also needs to stop the Thatcher Tribute act photos. who is paying for this anyway? Vanity project to make Liz Truss look stateswoman-like. Full time photographer? Salaried or daily fee? Are taxpayers footing the bill for her self-centred politically ambitious nonsense?

Putin was making a very clear point. He said at the start of the invasion that if anyone interfered he would respond swiftly and catastrophically (paraphrasing). What Truss did was to encourage citizens from a NATO country to do exactly what Putin warned everyone not to. The stepping up of nuclear deterrent in response is perhaps, to his thinking, proportional.

It needs clearing up, though. No matter how gung-ho politicians seem to be at the moment, this seems like something that needs a public apology and explanation.

That's my fear, he can use it as an excuse to retaliate against the UK. He will say that the UK is threatening his country and people. Everyone knows she said it, saves him lying and making things up that people can deny. I'm glad i'm not the only one annoyed by what she said and now worried about the consequences (hopefully there won't be any).

You're doing Putin's work for him. His threats are nothing to do with Truss. (And insisting that they do smacks of misogyny.) I think Truss looks pretty silly, but this is not on her.

The cynic in me thinks that maybe this is seen as a way of killing off a few immigrants. Most of the people who go to fight in Ukraine will be people whose family background is Ukrainian or at least eastern European. Not many people with no connection to the region are likely to go. Of those that go, many won't come back, which will help the official net migration figures.

He’s unstable, possibly unwell, possibly feeling backed into a corner and desperate and has huge nuclear capability. Apologising to him and retracting the statement would be the right thing to do in the current climate for the greater good

It’s just so irresponsible of her, not least because untrained people in a unique situation would likely become a hinderance to Ukraine because they might become injured and would need looking after.

It has a very The Pride of Miss Jean Brodie vibe and all the romanticism about fighting in the Spanish Civil War. (This is separate to the issue of those who enlisted in the International Brigade because. they saw it as a way to support anti-fascism.)

I wouldn't bother with an apology now. It rather plays to Putin's outrageous comments regarding his "red lines".
But we need to muzzle Truss and Ben Wallace before they make anymore asinine comments.
