What the hell was Liz Truss thinking!!?

So yesterday in a few interviews Liz Truss said she would support people going to fight in Ukraine. I couldn't believe it when i was watching her saying it, knowing Putins threats. This morning i've heard that apparently Putin has said that her comments are the reason he put his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. So now it feels like if he was to attack any other country it would be the UK as he would use her comments as an excuse by saying the UK is threatening his country and people by letting people go and fight against the Russian army. Honestly how could she be that stupid!!

@Libraryghost

What if Putin reads this thread and decides to nuke us based on our comments. He might use Mumsnet as a barometer of British opinion
He might be psychotic but I dont think he's brain dead. This thread isn't even a barometer of MN opinion. 🙄 😂
Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 28/02/2022 20:15

@VikingOnTheFridge

I didn't say he needed an excuse but giving him any excuse isn't helpful. Sorry, are you on Mumsnet offering me a new home? That's rather odd behaviour, and i'm not homeless so maybe offer it to someone who actually needs it

No, I'm on mumsnet pointing out that you're talking complete and total nonsense. You're clearly attaching at least some credibility to the claims of a deluded flailing autocrat. That's incredibly gullible of you.

Also, if you don't think Putin needs an excuse why are you talking about giving him one? Why even raise the possibility? The entire point here is that he's inevitably going to start trying to throw his nuclear weight around because the invasion hasn't gone how he hoped.

Not talking nonsense at all, it's a talking point whether you like it or not, end of. You're pleasant aren't you Hmm

She was probably responding to the besieged president making an urgent, direct appeal to foreign nationals (now a couple of days ago) via the media to come and fight with Ukrainian nationals, civilians - if they wanted to. She pointed out that it is legal (it has been legal to fight as a foreigner in the Ukrainian army since 2016) and that she, as foreign secretary would support nationals if they took that decision.

One of Russia's most active campaigns is to spread disinformation to pressure the West into abandoning Ukraine, hence, for example, the reports of Ukrainians roughing up foreign nationals at the border. didn't happen. highly successful campaign by Russia. Zelenskyy's message gets less attention in meantime.

thisisnt · 28/02/2022 20:59

Putin raised the nuclear threat in response to Liz Truss' comments that if Ukraine falls it weakens the rest of Europe - Russia must be stopped because it is dismantling Europe - I assume as the spokesperson, Pesov, didn't identify the precise comment. Perhaps Putin finds the idea of a have-a-go army more profound than the idea of Europe uniting to stopping Russia dismantling Europe piece by piece?

thisisnt · 28/02/2022 21:17

Or maybe Liz Zelenksyy's message was yesterday. I thought I read something on the 26th.
The Secretary of State brought up Nato and in response Putin brings up Nuclear weapons - as you would expect him to.

Yes you are. You evidently think Putin can be taken at his word, and you're contradicting yourself too. And saying it's a talking point is meaningless, because nobody's suggesting you aren't allowed to start a hugely gullible thread if you want. The issue is whether you're being extremely silly to believe Vladimir Putin, which you are.

twominutesmore · 28/02/2022 21:36

The Kremlin has made reference to Truss - and others - but most commentators I have heard/read think it was this comment that they are using as an excuse for escalation :

"On Sunday, she said if Russia was not stopped, other states may be threatened and it could end in conflict with Nato."

So, nothing that even remotely warrants their rhetoric. It is just smoke and mirrors designed to have us cowering and mud slinging, and this thread alone shows how gullible some are.

twominutesmore · 28/02/2022 21:41

I haven't rtft just op's comments so expect someone has said by now that Ukraine has invited foreign nationals to fight - have set up a sort of foreign legion I think - and Truss, in response to a question, said that she would support British people who answered that call, that it was their personal decision. Hardly a rallying cry or call to arms.

LittleWins · 28/02/2022 21:42

@leafinthewind

You're doing Putin's work for him. His threats are nothing to do with Truss. (And insisting that they do smacks of misogyny.) I think Truss looks pretty silly, but this is not on her.
Yep.

Angry balding man blames woman for his behaviour…again.

DdraigGoch · 28/02/2022 21:44

i've heard that apparently Putin...
He saw you coming, didn't he OP? Do you believe everything else he says too?

I don't think that it's misogyny. Not everything that involves criticism of a woman is down to misogyny. There are plenty of male politicians who get criticisms for coming out with misguided statements.

Corbyn at least had the measure of Putin years ago
Did I seriously just read this comment? Corbyn was the one going "nothing to see here" when Russian agents deployed chemical weapons on British soil.

TBF to Corbyn he actually asked for the evidence, rather said Russia didn't do it. He also said we were entering a new cold war with russia years ago, JC actually hates Putin and raised the spectre of Russian money in politics long before it became common knowledge.

However, on the Salisbury killings, the actual issue is why 2 men (known FSB) with a nerve agent, from a non EU country were allowed into the country and then back out again....

No FOM to blame, it was a shocking failure of basic border control, under a Tory Govt, who then did less on sanctions than the Americans did... such was their need to protect party funds.

That is complete rubbish. The two men came to UK as businessmen. They had the relevant visas. They left as businessmen immediately after spraying the poison around. It was only later that their real identities and involvement in the poisonings came to light.

Truss didn't say anything that Stoltenberg hadn't already pointed out in terms of escalation and conflict between NATO and Russia. Glad to see that they are singing from the,same hymn sheet.

YABU.

I hate the Tories and despise Liz Truss. She is an idiot and I don't agree with her comments. A random bunch of untrained, unorganised British volunteers won't be of any use to the Ukrainians right now.

However, let us not hold her responsible for the actions of a ruthless dictator who is just looking for any old excuse to justify his actions. That would be falling straight into Putin's propaganda trap.

Liz Truss is irrelevant, frankly. Putin is dangerous.

It seems you're not alone, a lot of people on here do not think favourably of Liz Truss. I know she's not responsible for Putins actions, i just felt that she gave him an excuse (i suppose he doesnt really need one though) against the UK as she was mentioned by Russia. Well, not by name ofcourse Grin Whatever happens i just hope and pray that peace will come soon and that things don't escalate to the use of nuclear weapons. I know alot of people are genuinely scared (i've read a few threads on here were people are talking about feeling distressed by the situation) about the future of the world with the fear of nuclear war. Hopefully something will soon bring about the end of the war and the unnecessary loss of life that comes with it 🙏🏻
