Is MN mainly full of middle to upper class posters?

Having read through some of the threads, especially tonight's holiday thread where everyone appears to be having multiple holidays this year, I'm feeling very low and inadequate, and that there's something wrong in my life Sad

Oh well, comparison is the thief of joy and all that.

OP posts:
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 11/01/2022 21:53

I'm not. 25k a year. Only managed to buy my own home just before lockdown due and that was because I got made redundant so I could afford a deposit

We have a 30 year old motorhome which we all holiday in. Not been abroad for 4 years. MIL paid then and before that it was when me and DP were about 19!

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 11/01/2022 21:55

I think it's less middle class than it used to be.

I started reading the holiday thread thinking it would nice knowing what others had planned, it did the opposite and made me feel inadequate so I clicked off. I'll be lucky to afford a day trip anywhere!

ComtesseDeSpair · 11/01/2022 21:56

I think there are some wealthy people on MN, and many people whose pants are at least sizzling with gentle flame Smile

You’ll have much more money than some posters and much less than others, just as life.

Lipsandlashes · 11/01/2022 21:57

One word to remember when you’re on the internet is ‘fabricated’.

WoodenReindeer · 11/01/2022 21:58

Ah yes I though that too "Ive just booked 4 exciting places but thats all so far..."

I'm middle class as in professional/well educated sort of well off family (judge/colonel/boarding school) but I have health issues and broke so not having exciting holidays!

Sunshinedreaming2022 · 11/01/2022 21:59

Yes I think it is very middle class. And those that aren’t probably has aspirations to be. Ffs it even has a board purely for pedantics who like to criticise everyone’s grammar.

WakkaWakkaWakka · 11/01/2022 22:00

I’m sure a majority are liars Grin

Breastfeedingworries · 11/01/2022 22:02

Well I’m on benefits 🤷🏼‍♀️ Just been reminded by my mum I’ve not got any money. Come from money but don’t have any 🥲

Which is hard to swallow and deal with, luckily I have lot of support and help so my dd doesn’t miss out on hobbies and things to do.

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 11/01/2022 22:02

Yes it definitely is.
With holidays though a lot of people have had them cancelled the last few years and some people have saved money by not having to commute etc, so may be booking more extravagant holidays than usual.

VestaTilley · 11/01/2022 22:04

Really don’t worry about it, OP.

DH and I are what you’d call middle class (now) but we’re actually from lower middle class/working class backgrounds.

As a result of having a DC then Covid we haven’t had a holiday for four years. We drive a used Astra. We’re at the bottom of our overdrafts.

Life for most people isn’t what it looks like on social media or Mumsnet. Please don’t worry.

MsTSwift · 11/01/2022 22:05

Why would you lie if it’s anonymous?! I got accused of lying about my job once which I found quite funny!

Yep. Even - perhaps especially- the heart-rending threads that keep us all engaged for days.
CuteOrangeElephant · 11/01/2022 22:06

DH and I have not been on holiday for years. We are going in April though, abroad. But it's to visit family so apart from the Eurostar tickets the cost will be low. I wonder how other families manage Confused

Pedants corner is a pedantic safe space! It's to keep keen grammar types away from the board at large because nobody likes having their writing criticised in public. Consider us banished and ignore us.

Unfortunately for most people the question is why wouldn’t they lie?
chessycurls · 11/01/2022 22:08

The holidays threads on here are another world

Ihatestripysocks · 11/01/2022 22:10

I know the feeling, the holiday thread did for me to. Same for pensions, retirement plans, education, even most the what’s for dinner tonight threads have me thinking never eaten half the things they mention. Might as well be on different planet.

chessycurls · 11/01/2022 22:10

But people do lie, hence all the troll threads. who knows why

Sunshinedreaming2022 · 11/01/2022 22:10

“ Pedants corner is a pedantic safe space! It's to keep keen grammar types away from the board at large because nobody likes having their writing criticised in public. Consider us banished and ignore us.”

And I appreciate that I do, but you wouldn’t find a pedants corner on a more working class forum like netmums for example. Mumsnet is very targeted towards the middle, and upper middle classes. Not always financially mind, being middle class is more then an income bracket, it’s more of a mindset. You can have a middle class mindset whilst living on benefits or holidaying may haven.

chessycurls · 11/01/2022 22:12

What i find weird is the cost of holidays is always ££££ but on the mortgage threads people baulk at anything over £600. Not representative of anything I see in RL.

JanuaryBluehoo · 11/01/2022 22:12

Sleaf, not really!!

For many years we could not afford "a holiday".

We had one night away in a b and b by the sea.

We certainly can't afford most of these all inclusive holidays people have.
I use yha a lot but now I struggle because of their strange lights and you can't open the windows.

However they have 25% off at the moment if you fancied anywhere??

KurtWilde · 11/01/2022 22:12

I'm not middle class. Some of the stuff I read on here is like peeping into another universe! Nannies and cleaners and 2+ cars and houses that cost 10x the rent I pay on mine per month, retirement and pension plans, holidays, and the sheer amount some people can afford to save each month Shock

MrsMop1964 · 11/01/2022 22:19

“ Pedants corner is a pedantic safe space! It's to keep keen grammar types away from the board at large because nobody likes having their writing criticised in public. Consider us banished and ignore us."

is there an apostrophe missing at the end of Pedants?

I was told that I didnt understand a technical handbook by a self professed expert in the field- who offered a lot (of wrong) advice.

I had written it!

Bob online and book a holiday then? £200 cottage-by-the-coast holiday is just as nice as... well, whatever other people do.
