Is MN middle class? Feeling inadequate and that my life is boring.

Is MN mainly full of middle to upper class posters?

Having read through some of the threads, especially tonight's holiday thread where everyone appears to be having multiple holidays this year, I'm feeling very low and inadequate, and that there's something wrong in my life Sad

Oh well, comparison is the thief of joy and all that.

Don't feel bad. We have two trips planned but have not travelled since the pandemic started. We are not wealthy, but we are older and have no mortgage any more. The pandemic limited our eating out and other activities so we have saved money.

It would not be this way if our children were still young. We never took a vacation together anywhere until they were grown. Just family trips where we live.

I have also worked at an extra job since I retired and that paid for travel. Travel is a priority as we have grandchildren in the UK and we are in Canada.

seekinglondonlife · 11/01/2022 23:53

There are definitely loads of fantasists. There's a thread on reddit where they keep tabs on certain MN posters who are supposedly very rich, but forget their own lies from time to time. I also recall a 'show me your bedroom' thread where a poster put up a pic of her rather grand bedroom, and another poster identified it as a very expensive hotel in Paris.

Thank you for the link! Crikey! That beats the mortgage free and retired decades earlier thread! That’s a lot of travel! I actually really feel sorry for the planet especially as that’s just a minuscule snapshot into a few peoples lives! Imagine if every person on the planet did that! It really is a case of “how the other half live”

Reallycantbesarsed · 11/01/2022 23:59

On paper our family are MC but it's fair to say that financially we are just managing..and TBH I don't actually care !

MaryAndHerNet · 12/01/2022 00:04

I think there's a good slice of people.
But, there are some that embellish.

Personally, I love little more than surfing MN from my 4 bed detached yacht in the Cartman Irelands whilst earning a 6 figure salary doing mlm and matched betting...

(In reality I'm unemployed, living on Universal Credit that's £950 a month and I'm parent of a 8 yo daughter and we live in a Social Housing house in a sink town in the north)

funji · 12/01/2022 00:04

We would be fucked

only 3 % of the world population take regular flights.

KingofQueens · 12/01/2022 00:06

I spotted my friend's husband on here after he posted some glaringly obvious personal details.
As the weeks went on he began to post about their lives - an extremely embellished version of an approximation of their lives. He claimed his in-laws live in a huge country pile - they live on a 1970s housing estate.
He also claimed my friend had a much more senior role than she does "my wife is xyz". I just laughed.
I don't know why people would come on here and make up grandiose versions of their lives, but for some reason they do.

So no, I don't expect half the holiday stories are true.

hivemindneeded · 12/01/2022 00:07

Don't believe everything you read on the internet OP. People come on to fantasise their ideal life to a bunch of strangers. Even if everyone on the holiday thread is telling the truth, how many people are on that thread in comparison with how many people are on MN? A tiny proportion.

Flowersandhearts · 12/01/2022 00:15

YANBU; the relatively small number of very wealthy people in the UK are massively overrepresented on Mumsnet!

Remember the majority of people in the UK are struggling to get by. Average income is around £30k, most people are lucky to go on one cheap holiday every/every other year, lots of public sector workers need to use food banks to cover the basics etc.

stuntbubbles · 12/01/2022 00:16

Haven’t read the full thread but on title alone: no. If anything, it’s nouveau.

Flowersandhearts · 12/01/2022 00:21

I should say it may not be class related though- I'm from a middle class family and would probably class myself as middle class (in terms of interests etc.) but I'm disabled and on a very low income due to my condition. Mumsnet is full of wealthy people, some of them are upper middle class, some working class.

Catra · 12/01/2022 00:22

I'm middle class (from a middle-class background at least) but it doesn't mean I'm wealthy. I have a Masters degree but my daughter is disabled so my earning potential is severely restricted. I haven't had a holiday in five years, can't afford to run a car, and live in a house far too small for my family's needs. I'm happy with my life but when people talk about their lifestyles on here I can't help but feel a twinge of jealousy.

OhWhyNot · 12/01/2022 00:24

Yes I think a large number are and many certainly like everyone else to know

And certainly some living in a fantasy world

I wouldn’t let it get to you half of what you read is probably highly exaggerated

Seriouslymole · 12/01/2022 00:27

@MrsMop1964

“ Pedants corner is a pedantic safe space! It's to keep keen grammar types away from the board at large because nobody likes having their writing criticised in public. Consider us banished and ignore us."

is there an apostrophe missing at the end of Pedants?

😂😂😂😂😂 Yes, I believe there is.

OP, I’m pretty middle class as it goes and we always holiday in the U.K.

Lottiebugz22 · 12/01/2022 00:30

It seems to be.
I'm on benefits. I always feel inadequate when reading certain posts. Perhaps I shouldn't come on mumsnet! 😂

SandyPanda · 12/01/2022 00:57

I haven't read that holiday thread but they're not all claiming to be on their third holiday to Elevenerife already this year again are they? Wink

PhoenixIsFlying · 12/01/2022 01:25

Haven't had a holiday abroad for well over 15 years, had first one booked and so excited to take my daughter on her first trip away. Holiday cancelled due to covid.

Andante57 · 12/01/2022 01:44

There was a poster who on a “show us a photo of your bedroom” thread tried to pass off a photo they’d pinched from the website of a luxury hotel in Paris as their own home

That was rather sad. I wonder if the poster did it as a joke or whether she was hoping to impress.

tomorrowalready · 12/01/2022 04:10

That reminds me when my sister worked in a hotel and quite often recognised some of the rooms being used to illustate 'At Home With A Celebrity' type article in magazines. Understandable but cheeky.

madisonbridges · 12/01/2022 04:14

I read somewhere that class is a construct.
So I've done some constructing and I'm pleased to announce, I'm now upper class. It's very nice up here.

onlychildhamster · 12/01/2022 04:20

I had 2 foreign holidays per year but I actually do come from another country so get free accomodation there. And even when I stayed at a budget hotel while the air conditioning at the family home was getting fixed and my DH wanted space, it wasn't too expensive. And the second holiday was usually to a city in Europe and we stayed at a budget hotel and it was only a few days...

There seem to be a lot of mumsnetters with overseas family so that would account for a significant proportion... People might not say oh I have a brother there so stayed at his house...they may just talk about the fun things.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 12/01/2022 04:52

I haven't seen the holiday thread, but we are having two "big" holidays this year, at least on paper.

One is an activity holiday in Italy which was postponed from 2020. The other is a trip to the US but that is to see DHs parents who we havent seen for four years.

I think MN is quite MC. The level of entitlement from some posters is incredible.

Simonjt · 12/01/2022 05:02

No, but there are many extremely insecure liars who are so insecure they have to pretend they have never ever done anything they consider common.

LadyPropane · 12/01/2022 05:07

Everyone on MN falls into 2 categories:

So poor that they haven't eaten in 3 weeks and are selling their toenail clippings on Etsy to save up for a pack of bog roll, or so rich that they have their Butler check MN for them and post fancy musings on their behalf.
