To not want to drive 40 minutes to return a Jam Jar?

itsme189 · 21/10/2021 11:00

A family member (partners side) made us all Jam for Christmas last year, lovely gift and was very nice.

They now want all the Jars back to do it again they are like Kilner Jars (just not branded I don't think) I do still have it in the random Tupperware cupboard.

I would have to drive 40 minutes to return the Jar DH thinks I should as it is thiers. I just said it was a gift and I am happy to not receive any Jam this year to avoid this. We wont see them between now and Christmas. He thinks I'm being unreasonable?

DH can't drive and there is no public transport to where they live!

Post it

Amazon them a new one

VimFuego101 · 21/10/2021 11:02

YANBU, surely the jar is part of the gift?

Burnt0utMum · 21/10/2021 11:02

Tell them they're welcome to come and collect them?

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 21/10/2021 11:02

Tell them you gave it to a friends Child to use as a paint holder

negomi90 · 21/10/2021 11:03

In the interest of family piece can you order a similar one delivered to their house as a compromise?

CreateAName123 · 21/10/2021 11:03

It was a gift.... It's weird to ask for it back. And a bit tight tbh.

gamerchick · 21/10/2021 11:03

Tell them they're welcome to collect it. Don't get into a back and forth.

Bancha · 21/10/2021 11:03

That is bonkers.

SpringSparrow · 21/10/2021 11:03

I would give the jar back next time I saw them. Or get your DH to post it?! Probably cost less than your petrol to post it back!

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 21/10/2021 11:04

I would amazon them a new one and tell them to keep their jam this year...

MintJulia · 21/10/2021 11:04

Agree. order them a new one.

Anoisagusaris · 21/10/2021 11:04

Did they tell you at the time they wanted the jar back?

Just say you don’t have it any more or are using it for something else.

gamerchick · 21/10/2021 11:04

And tell your bloke if he wants to send it back he's welcome to sort that out himself.

MoonahStone · 21/10/2021 11:04

Just tell them the jar was your favourite bit of the gift Grin

MistyFrequencies · 21/10/2021 11:04

The petrol of driving that distance outweighs the benefit of reusing the jar. Not a chance I'd do that for a bit more jam.

notapizzaeater · 21/10/2021 11:05

We had this with posh Xmas bags, I just bought a new set and returned the originals full of gifts so everyone has one and just recycles them each year. I'd be tempted to send them some on Amazon and return last years when you collect this years so you should never have this issue again.

Shoxfordian · 21/10/2021 11:05

Yanbu
Surely the jar was part of the present?

LemonMuffins · 21/10/2021 11:05

I can't believe people are telling you to order them a new jar Grin
I'd tell them to either collect it or forget it. You won't be leaving the house with the jar.

PlinkPlankPlunk · 21/10/2021 11:06

Use the petrol money to buy yourself some locally made jam. Then everyone is happy, including the environment!

thevassal · 21/10/2021 11:06

Tell them you recycled it/it smashed accidentally. Say you understand if that means you don't get jam that year.
40 minutes each way or 40 mins in total? Either way that's, what, between 3-8 quid for a jar!!!
No thanks id rather buy my own jam!

TumtumTree · 21/10/2021 11:07

Your DH is being very unreasonable to expect you to do this when it is his family member who is asking! Let him sort it out OP. He can use any of the suggestions above (posting / getting a new one delivered from Amazon / asking family member to collect / telling family member not to worry about giving jam this year).

IglesiasPiggl · 21/10/2021 11:07

I would say the jar has already been reused for the school fair, so unfortunately you don't have it. It is bonkers to drive all that way to recycle a jar.

girlmom21 · 21/10/2021 11:08

Why can't he deliver it if it's his family and he thinks it should be returned?

ArianaDumbledore · 21/10/2021 11:08

That's very annoying, as they're asking for it back they' should offer to collect. Are there any others being asked who are a bit nearer to you that wouldn't mind passing it on?
