Do I tell bf about what he ate?

I'm in a new relationship and he is vegan. While I'm not, I understand and appreciate his viewpoint and want to be respectful of his choices so I've become quite thorough at checking labels on things to make sure they are suitable for him.

Was at his place recently and noticed he had something in his fridge I've never tasted before so I picked it up to have a look. Out of habit I checked the label and noticed that it isn't vegan, in fact it's not even vegetarian! I don't think he has realised as, while he isn't militant about it, I'm sure he wouldn't want to eat it if he knew. The jar was half empty so he has definitely been eating it.

I don't want to make him feel bad by pointing it out but if you were vegan would you want to know? Should I say anything?

No I’m sure he knows.

Tealwarrior · 03/09/2021 19:59

I would say something by way of making it clear that he’s either a vegan or he’s not and if not then it doesn’t need to be taken into consideration going forward.

CustardySergeant · 03/09/2021 20:00

Yes, if I were vegan I would want to know, but then I'm pretty sure vegans are used to reading labels to find out which foods are vegan as there are many ingredients for example, gelatine which you wouldn't necessarily be able to detect. Surely he has read the labels on the foods in his house.

DismantledKing · 03/09/2021 20:01

Was it a pork pie?

phishy · 03/09/2021 20:01

Of course you should tell him, so he doesn’t buy it again.

PlanDeRaccordement · 03/09/2021 20:01

No, don’t say anything. I’m sure he knows it’s not vegan or vegetarian and is eating it anyway. You don’t have to be 100% vegan in all things to identify as vegan. And some vegans do occasionally eat nonvegan for health reasons.

herculesoffline · 03/09/2021 20:01

What was the item?

Summersnake · 03/09/2021 20:02

I’m vegan ,I’d definitely want to know if I’d bought something not vegan ..especially if someone knew I was eating it and didn’t tell me

DoylyCarte · 03/09/2021 20:03

Pesto?

FleasInMyKnees · 03/09/2021 20:03

Was it a fatball

troobleflooble · 03/09/2021 20:04

@DoylyCarte it was kimchi. It has shrimp paste in it.

OP posts:
phishy · 03/09/2021 20:05

I think lots of people would assume kimchi is vegetarian, I would tell him.

Dixiechickonhols · 03/09/2021 20:05

I’d tell him.
Either he doesn’t know eg recipe changed and it’s kind to tell him or he’s flexible/not full vegan and you’ll know.

AdaColeman · 03/09/2021 20:05

Does he make sure that everything he eats at your house is vegan, or is he quite relaxed about his food?

Blueroses99 · 03/09/2021 20:06

Yes tell him so he knows not to buy it again.

Dalooah · 03/09/2021 20:08

Considering it's kimchi that on the face of it would be vegan, I'd tell him. I'd want to know if I'd made a dietary requirement clear and was going wrong somewhere

TenThousandSpoons · 03/09/2021 20:08

Pork pie 😂

Clymene · 03/09/2021 20:08

Given kimchi is quite often flavoured with seafood, I'm surprised he didn't check the label.

TenThousandSpoons · 03/09/2021 20:09

Yes tell him. He’d want to know.

WinTheNight · 03/09/2021 20:09

Yes, I’d tell him. I’m vegan and would want to know....although I double check everything so no chance of it happening.

You can get vegan kimchi so maybe he’s presumed it’s all vegan or has picked up non vegan sort by mistake. Tell him.

Iwonder08 · 03/09/2021 20:10

Let the guy enjoy it. If it was that important for him to be 100% vegan he would have checked the label.

NigellaSeed · 03/09/2021 20:11

@FleasInMyKnees

Was it a fatball
Grin
GreenTortoise · 03/09/2021 20:11

Maybe he is like Pam from Gavin and Stacey and stuffs his face with ham when no one is looking Grin.

No, in all seriousness just tell him. I'm sure he'll get the vegan equivalent once he knows.

WinTheNight · 03/09/2021 20:12

Rubbish advice. If he’s vegan, he’ll want to know.

SnapAndFartAllDayLong · 03/09/2021 20:12

"Pork pie" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
