To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

I agree. We were supposed to be going to Scotland and the weather is wall to wall rain every single day. We've not gone.

PuppyMonkey · 09/08/2021 08:19

No such thing as bad weather just poor clothing choices as they say.

NeverTalkToStrangers · 09/08/2021 08:20

YANBU. We had a week’s UK holiday earlier in the year when the weather was changeable but basically fine, and it was amazing after we’d got past the first day’s rain. But UK holidays with day after day of rain are so grim. Even city breaks are a challenge now you have to pre-book anything indoors.

That's such a shame, we had 5 weeks of nothing but sunshine and 20c up until last week here in Scotland. August is always wet.

In what way, @PuppyMonkey ?
TroysMammy · 09/08/2021 08:21

The sun is shining in Swansea at the minute so people on holiday on the Gower might have a good day.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 09/08/2021 08:21

It's crap. I've had holidays like this and it's so miserable.

Just waiting for someone to come along and trot out the "there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing" blah blah ..

Tryingtryingandtrying · 09/08/2021 08:21

It's not so bad as you need to cancel. There's always breaks in the rain. We are camping in the North East.

Farevalah · 09/08/2021 08:22

Agree. Can't imagine being cooped up in a cottage or caravan in this weather. Feel sorry for those who've paid 2k plus for a week away.

Agree. For once in our lives we actually had good weather for our British holiday, but bloody hell my heart goes out to friends of ours who are in the Lake District this week.

It's bad enough being at home!

Also sorry @PuppyMonkey I think that is bollocks! I mean, maybe the Scandis say that to themselves, but not sure it applies when you have small children to entertain and a rented house by the beach in Cornwall, or a hotel room in Skegness, in which to do it.

Yeah sure Hmm because I love getting wet and muddy with a 3 and 2 year old.

Fitschkels · 09/08/2021 08:23

No pity required!! We are in North Cornwall. It poured the first day we were here. We totally relaxed, went to the big Tescos, did Lego, played Uno and Cluedo, allowed screen time, had long naps, read our books and went for dinner. Such a lovely day and really needed.

Yesterday it brightened up so we went rockpooling for 3 hours and again just relaxed and chilled with each other. Went for dinner. All really lovely.

Off to a major tourist attraction today and looking forward to it.

NeverTalkToStrangers · 09/08/2021 08:23

However anyone who’s away Saturday to Saturday this week in Southern England/Wales should have 5 days decent weather ahead of them now so if that’s you I hope you enjoy the rest of your holidays.

pineapplecat21 · 09/08/2021 08:23

YABU. We are in the middle of a heat wave this week where I am.

Oh please what a stupid thing to say. People want to enjoy their holidays not dry their clothes out.
Dentistlakes · 09/08/2021 08:23

We’re in Wales and the weather has been amazing! Of course the weather can (and probably will) change at any moment, so you have to be prepared. The weather doesn’t change much for us apart from what we’re wearing. We’re not a lying on the beach sunbathing type of family though.

WingBingo · 09/08/2021 08:24

@TroysMammy I am staying in The Gower. Wall to wall sunshine this morning. Going to be a good week. I have decided!

To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now
Holly60 · 09/08/2021 08:25

Ahh that’s so lovely of you to worry. We are away with our adult DC and grandchildren and having a fantastic time!!! So amazing to get to be together properly after Covid. Lots of wine has been taken!

The children are LOVING being away with their cousins - it’s such an adventure. It has rained, so they’ve done outdoor swimming in the rain (heated pool luckily), and a muddle puddle nature trail, as well as just getting waterproofs on to go to see animals at the nearby farm (they’re hardy, my lot Grin)

The sun has appeared too so lunch in the sun has featured quite a lot.

Just bliss being away together really Smile

Vroomed · 09/08/2021 08:25

It’s been fine in NI over the past week on north coast. One day of rain last week but otherwise pretty good. Am now in Republic of Ireland and seems nice here too but only on Day 1.

Freddiefox · 09/08/2021 08:25

I also feel sorry for the industry as a whole, next people people will just go abroad again it’s a shame as it was an opportunity to boast uk breaks

rookiemere · 09/08/2021 08:26

We were so lucky with our two UK summer breaks to get good weather, it makes you forget how less fun it is in the rain.
Of course one still can do things in the rain, but majority of pursuits - walking, mooching, sitting outside enjoying the scenery- are much less enjoyable. Plus majority of restaurants and pubs are totally rammed due to everyone holidaying in the UK and without the outside space they are even worse.

Dentistlakes · 09/08/2021 08:28

Us too! It’s absolutely stunning here, rain or shine. One of my favourite parts of the world, I get withdrawal symptoms of we don’t get here once a year.

This. Always look at the weather forecast and pack accordingly. We've had two wettish camper van trips and a glorious one in late May. Hoping for more sunshine later this month.

I accept if you have picked one wet week and that all you can have that it's disappointing but when I was a child in the 50s and 60s holidays abroad were not the norm. Climate change and a move to fewer flights, however this is achieved, will mean people will have to get used to this again. I hate the term 'staycation' as it suggests any holiday other than one abroad is not really a holiday at all. It should mean a holiday at home with day trips out.
