To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

People want to enjoy their holidays not dry their clothes out

With the right clothes, there's very little drying, and nearly everything you would want to do can still be done. Not sunbathing, obviously

NoSquirrels · 09/08/2021 08:29

Depends where you are, surely? I had last week off and it rained heavily one day (kids went swimming indoors then had a movie afternoon) but all the other days have been lovely - warm, sunshine, sit out to eat weather. Few rain showers at the weekend (we were camping) but again, didn’t stop us doing or exploring, just meant maybe a few damp moments.

Sheeting cold rain, that’s no fun. But the British weather is changeable- and whilst that’s a pain sometimes it’s also a good thing because you know things will… change!

Findmeatthebeach · 09/08/2021 08:29

We have been away camping this past week. 50mph winds and torrential rain whilst sat in a tent is not fun!

FlyingScott · 09/08/2021 08:29

@xksismybestletter

I agree. We were supposed to be going to Scotland and the weather is wall to wall rain every single day. We've not gone.
Aww you should have just gone. We holidayed in Scotland last week. The weather forecast had been poor from Wednesday onwards but it didn’t actually rain until Friday and even then it was only showers so we still managed to get out and do things.
FreeBritnee · 09/08/2021 08:30

We holidayed last year in the UK just when restrictions started lifting but many children’s attractions weren’t open. It rained. Man that was a loooooooong 10 days 😬

Suprima · 09/08/2021 08:30

I feel sorry for them too, particularly if they have been scared out of going abroad or thought they are selfish for doing so. Or those who couldn’t go because of the fear of money-making prison-like quarantine hotels or just the cost of testing to go somewhere. This is necessary of course, but doesn’t have to be used to line the pockets of quickly knocked up private companies.

I went away to a green country despite a lot of people being pissed off at me for daring to travel. I felt so incredibly safe there compared to the covid hotspot I live in. I didn’t come back with covid. One of said friends actually ended up catching covid doing something ‘essential’ at home.

Travel has been an interesting one. So much schadenfreude, particularly from those who are usually extremely critical of government policy.

PuppyMonkey · 09/08/2021 08:30

The poor clothing choices thing is a well known saying, not me btw.

TheChineseChicken · 09/08/2021 08:31

We’re on a British holiday and it’s bright sunshine! No sympathy needed here

Iamthewombat · 09/08/2021 08:32

YABU. We are in the middle of a heat wave this week where I am.

Eh? The OP is unreasonable for feeling sorry for people on rainy British holidays with small children because you, wherever you are, are experiencing a heatwave?

FlyingScott · 09/08/2021 08:32

Actually the days with showers can bring a dramatic change of scenery giving some interesting photo opportunities and good chance of a rainbow or two🌈

swampytiggaa · 09/08/2021 08:32

I’m in north Devon. Weather is changeable but honestly not as bad as forecast. Me and H had decided on a day out yesterday - I got in from work and it was raining we decided to go anyway. Bit drizzly to start then was utterly glorious by lunchtime.

Today looks ok so far.

The weather changes so quickly by the coast.

hibbledibble · 09/08/2021 08:33

There's worse than a bit of rain, no one will melt! Put on a raincoat and wellies!

Took the kids for an outdoor day out yesterday in the rain and they loved it. It's adults that are precious about this.

Some people are so feeble.

JaninaDuszejko · 09/08/2021 08:33

I've just checked the forecast and the weather here in the NE of England is dry all week with temperatures of 21-22C. Sounds pretty perfect holiday weather to me Confused.

We went down south for May half term and the weather was roasting, hotter than our last two foreign holidays. We're off to the north of Scotland next week, forecast is 16-17C, with a few wet days. We're visiting family, going to historic sites, museums, art galleries and the shore whenever it's dry. It's going to be great Grin.

onemouseplace · 09/08/2021 08:33

A blogger I follow has been on a U.K. break the last couple of weeks and has done nothing but moan about it (and has apparently booked a holiday abroad for later this month). I just looked at what she packed (looks like the same wardrobe you’d take on a Med based summer holiday) and just thought that she got a U.K. holiday so wrong - apparently they didn’t even take raincoats!

U.K. holidays are different - you can completely luck out on the weather and get a baking week, but most of the time you won’t. We go abroad, but we do U.K. holidays as well and enjoy those just as much!

MsTSwift · 09/08/2021 08:33

Forecast not bad for rest of the week here low twenties and sunny. We would rather be abroad but have taken a flat in a pretty seaside town sea views from flat our teens really enjoying the little shops cafes fish and chips beach etc. Off to a posh spa today. Enjoying it more than I thought we would and no fretting about lists quarantine rules and getting stranded.

jasminoide · 09/08/2021 08:33

I'm in Yorkshire and it has been very wet the last week. We've still had a great time though. There have been pleasant breaks between the rain, there are lots of indoor attractions anyway and I'd much rather get away somewhere in the rain than stay at home in the rain. No need to feel sorry for us OP, we weren't expecting to be sunbathing anyway.

Cosywithcandles · 09/08/2021 08:34

Yanbu, the weather can really make or break a UK holiday.

It's ok to trot out the "no such thing as bad weather" line. That's fine when you're talking about a rainy walk at home, where you can get home and walk up by the fire, but it's a different situation on holiday.

If you're in a touring caravan or camping near the coast, with children, constant rain is grim. Not enough space to properly relax inside, most things indoors need to be booked in advance, there's nowhere to properly dry everything. Walking to shower blocks in the rain.

A day or two you can deal with, but when it's all week it just wrecks your holiday.

PuppyMonkey · 09/08/2021 08:34

OP said anyone on a British holiday @Iamthewombat

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 09/08/2021 08:35

We're off to Norfolk today - luckily staying somewhere lovely, so it won't matter if we're stuck inside a bit. Also the kids are older so it's easier to manage them. We almost always do UK holidays and we're usually very lucky with the weather.

ActonSquirrel · 09/08/2021 08:36

@Farevalah

Agree. Can't imagine being cooped up in a cottage or caravan in this weather. Feel sorry for those who've paid 2k plus for a week away.
I don't. Who would spend £2k for a week in the UK?

We all know the weather is rotten here

FlyingScott · 09/08/2021 08:37

@Freddiefox

I also feel sorry for the industry as a whole, next people people will just go abroad again it’s a shame as it was an opportunity to boast uk breaks
Nah, I’ll be glad when people are able to go abroad again (properly). There doesn’t seem to be enough capacity for everyone to holiday in the U.K. , everywhere is rammed.
PotteringAlong · 09/08/2021 08:37

Don’t pity us - we’ve had a lovely week, the sun is shining and we’re off to the beach. It’s not tipping it down everywhere in the UK

To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now
yoshiblue · 09/08/2021 08:37

@Darkchocolateandcoffee

Were in the North Lakes this week and after a wet weekend, it’s now dry 🤞🤞🤞 for the rest of the week.

We’ve been holed up with good food, board games, books and the Nintendo Switch, so we’ve been happy enough. I’d never expect a dry week here and any good weather is a bonus!

GiveMeAUserName123 · 09/08/2021 08:38

First day here and it’s due to rain all day but I’m good with that as I’m shattered and want a day to actually relax. Next five days really sunny and hot so we consider ourselves lucky!!

(I’d cry if it was raining all week though and I’d paid 2k or something)?

LeonoraFlorence · 09/08/2021 08:39

We’re on holiday in Scotland just now and we’ve had amazing weather. It’s been a little bit of paradise here, weather included! :)
