To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

Same in Ireland, horrendous weather and someone we know has just come home for the first time in 2 years and is staying away from anything indoors because of covid. We had so much sun this year and I feel so bad for them

Yorkshiretolondon · 11/08/2021 09:52

@FleetwoodRaincoat

It's crap. I've had holidays like this and it's so miserable.

Just waiting for someone to come along and trot out the "there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing" blah blah ..

Someone has already said this lol
PeachyPeachTrees · 11/08/2021 10:13

We were in Dorset all of last week and it rained every day except 2. Even on those days, 17 degrees and a light wind coming off the sea did not tempt me in! We had a lovely break, but eating chips in the rain isn't great.

TeaAndBiscuitsAndWine · 11/08/2021 10:59

What about when you’re wearing the right clothing, but also half blind and wearing bottle bottom glasses (no contact lenses for medical reasons), so if it rains are essentially blind without an umbrella, which means no going outside if it’s windy as well as rainy?! Plus as always it’s easier if you have money to throw at the problem - holiday cottage not camping, staying somewhere with a pool, able to fork out for indoor playcentres (young children get bored so quickly without being able to run around and burn off energy), able to pay for restaurants when BBQs on a campsite are a no go etc. Have experienced all this, and it was miserable! I now go on fewer holidays so that I can spend more on them to make sure they are fun regardless of the weather, but am lucky can afford to do so!

TeaAndBiscuitsAndWine · 11/08/2021 11:01

Could have done without the tube strikes in london in the middle of the school holidays though!

lovescats3 · 11/08/2021 11:08

Hi Fitschkels, we are in north Cornwall too. First time in the north , usually go to the south, any tips on beaches and places to visit please ? Thanks very much

007Stocko · 11/08/2021 11:15

@PuppyMonkey

No such thing as bad weather just poor clothing choices as they say.
@PuppyMonkey Are you a Scout Leader by any chance as this is a well known saying with many a Cub and Scout Group.

The weather is something that none of us can change, it is what it is! And therefore, in order to make the most of the situation its about trying to be as prepared as you possibly can. Decent gear makes all the difference on your ability to just crack on and get on with it.

No one is suggesting that you don't use your noddle and change different activities around so that maybe you do an indoor activity if its wet today but due to be nice tomorrow etc.

Climate change aside you'll not change the weather so just try and be as prepared as you can be to cope with it. Rain doesn't always have to stop play.

Abraxan · 11/08/2021 11:35

Drizzle in Cornwall this morning but quite warming - currently 18/19 but once sun comes out it'll be over 20 I hope.

Fingers crossed the drizzle ends soon as we are on way to pick Dd and two friends from the airport to hand over their tent and alcohol as they are going to a festival here for a few days. Would like it to be dry for pitching the tent at least.

lovescats3 · 11/08/2021 12:42

Hi Flakeshortage, which towns and villages have you visited please ? Thanks very much

TalkSomeSense20 · 11/08/2021 14:33

There's always one. Play Ludo? Make a cake? Watch a film? Chat? Spot birds out of the window? Draw the landscape? You don't always have to be 'doing' stuff that costs money or needs weeks of planning. Just be together without the normal everyday crap getting in the way.

Goldbar · 11/08/2021 14:49

Good suggestions for a holiday cottage. Less useful for those enduring the horrors of wet weather camping.

British holidays seem to be an exercise in making the best of it. Forget cocktails by the beach and swimming in the sea, you can bake banana bread and do the crossword instead while your clothes are drying on the radiator. And be thankful you have a dry bed to sleep in unlike the poor sods at the campsite along the way!

I'm 49 and I don't think I've never had cocktails by the beach Grin. I'm obviously holidaying wrong! I've done lots of swimming in the sea though, including on every camping holiday I've been on (even ones where there were quite a few rainy, non-beachy days).

If your bed is wet while camping, you're definitely doing it wrong. Or you need a new tent. Or possibly some pull-ups.

..........
You have to make the best of some holidays abroad too, it isn't all about weather. You can swim in the sea, or an outdoor pool, when it is raining. It's actually quite nice.

lazylinguist · 11/08/2021 15:51

I agree with you - it's (me quoting) Goldbar that you're quoting there, not me! Grin

Goldbar · 11/08/2021 15:55

Yes, that was my comment originally. @lazylinguist is a fellow happy camper of yours Smile.

Plumtree391 · 11/08/2021 16:06

Sorry for my mistake.

I've never camped in my life and wouldn't.

I have had many UK holidays and some abroad. It's swings and roundabouts whatever you do. Most of mine have been pretty good.

lazylinguist · 11/08/2021 17:13

We've just been checking the tent over before starting packing to go camping on Saturday for a week in Wales. Weather forecast says light rain the day we arrive, which is annoying for putting the tent up, but looks ok after that.

I never fancied camping, didn't try it until the age of 34 (persuaded by dh) and was amazed to find I really liked it! My teen dc both really like it too. We all love foreign holidays and love UK ones too. As dh always says 'camping is an end in itself'. It's an activity, not just accommodation. If you see it as just accommodation, it's not going to compare with a hotel or a holiday cottage. Grin

PaperMonster · 11/08/2021 17:55

We recently returned from a fortnight in Northumberland. Fabulous weather except for two days. Last summer was the same. In the past ten years I’ve only had one UK holiday where the weather was awful - and that was one week out of the two.

letsmakethishappen · 11/08/2021 19:02

Why would you feel sorry for that sunny beach in Devon I have just posted posted ?

Casiloco · 11/08/2021 19:38

I'm usually an annoyingly glass-half-full woman, but there's been nothing more bloody miserable than our UK "breaks" this year. Cold, relentless rain, nothing open or if it is open, fully booked. If not fully booked, then ridiculously rammed and everything, EVERYTHING bloody way more expensive than abroad! Including pretty darn average accommodation, with indifferent service, disappointing food and zero ambience.
I can't wait for our trip to Spain in late September!

ancientgran · 11/08/2021 21:05

I think there's alot worse places to be just now. The fires raging in many countries strike me as a lot worse than a bit of British rain.

Ghislainedefeligonde · 11/08/2021 21:26

I do feel bad for people on holiday this week but as my granny would have said
‘You’re not made of sugar’
My dh was out with the kids up a hill yesterday when it starting pouring, absolutely bouncing down. They had a ball getting soaked and then came home and got dry. It can be fun (admittedly maybe not if you are in a tent and everything is soggy 😬) but you do have to try to make the most of things. At least it’s not cold…

My dad used to say that, he once leant me his top of the range raingear for a concert and as the heavens opened I leaned on the railings and smiled, the peaked hood was the perfect size so I could see everything but was totally dry!
