To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

I live in Wales the forecast was bad the A55 clogged with folks going home on Friday. I've camped here after four days of rain we packed up and went home. It's grim when everything is wet through

whenwillthemadnessend · 09/08/2021 08:51

Get used to it

Global warming will push a lot of folks out of the abroad market Taxes are going to leap.

We are just starting our second week of holiday and are having a lovely time. Lots of relaxing, walking, swimming, playing tennis, eating out, bike rides, visiting beauty spots, museums, animal parks. Yesterday was the only day where it rained for most of the day and even then we had a good day even if we did get wet and mud-splashed. Agree if camping then yesterday would not have been great.

Personally I feel sorry for people on holiday in 30+ degrees having to lie around most of the day because it’s too hot to do much and struggling to sleep at night because of the heat. And constantly having to reapply sun cream. And struggling to be understood because they don’t speak the language. (Yes this is a bit tongue in cheek as I know not all non-UK holidays are like that and I enjoy foreign holidays in non-summer or in eg Northern Europe but do not see the appeal at all of many of the holidays people go on.)

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/08/2021 08:52

Limited sympathy here - I'm working and would give anything to be somewhere else even if it was raining!

Bluejeanjen · 09/08/2021 08:52

This is why our uk holidays are usually secondary to our lovely abroad holidays. This year they are our only holidays and yes it’s been bloody disappointing and reaffirmed why we don’t holiday properly in the uk and why we NEVER holiday in the uk in August! When I was a kid Summer was Summer. Now it’s nicer in June and Sept than it ever is July and August.

Hopeisallineed · 09/08/2021 08:53

I live in Cumbria so am used to it but honestly I can understand if it’s your holiday and you are expecting something else. We go up to Scotland a lot and it’s always four seasons in one day but I think it’s all about expectations. I pack a lot of games! 😂

Fastforwardtospring · 09/08/2021 08:53

We’re in North Devon in a camper van, if we’d gone by the weather forecast we wouldn’t have come, whilst here it’s been a mixed bag of weather, most rain has been at night, lots of sunshine during the day, bit windy but that’s due to drop, perfect for exploring, I’m really glad we came, has been a welcome break, the windy walks have blown our recent isolation cobwebs away ( we were out of isolation before we came! )

StrongArm · 09/08/2021 08:53

We were down on the south coast this weekend for a family holiday

We are hardy types and swim no matter the weather but the beaches all had massive 'danger' signs and red flags as the weather was too hideous

Luckily I had booked some great restaurants and the older kids booked the cinema

But in terms of a beach holiday, it was a total washout. Didn't even get to put a toe in the sea!

vixeyann · 09/08/2021 08:53

I do feel very sorry for the campers as it's so difficult keeping everything dry but. for everyone else, a bit of rain doesn't stop play. All my holidays as a kid were in this country so I think it was just accepted that the likelihood of the weather being amazing in that week was slim. I would prefer the rain to the extreme heat we had a couple of weeks ago - it was too hot to get out and about. As a selfish aside, we are loving the rain here in Devon, as we can get to the beach and the moors without all the tourists who stay in!

whenwillthemadnessend · 09/08/2021 08:54

I'm going today have a converted barn with a swimming pool Only £875 for a week.
Booked last year tho so lucky to get it at that price.

Hopeisallineed · 09/08/2021 08:54

Also would not want to be on holiday in Greece or Turkey at the moment. So horrible, my heart goes out to them.

dottydodah · 09/08/2021 08:54

Well I burn just driving along with my window open! So although been abroad many times ,just as happy here TBH. Looking forward to going to Kent in September for a week .Usually doesnt rain non stop here .As long as sunshine /showers can usually have a few hours staying dry.

WeeYellaDug · 09/08/2021 08:54

We’ve just spent 4 weeks touring Scotland in our caravan. We had a day or so of rain at the beginning of July then 5 days sunshine, on to Skye where the weather is mixed anyway and had 3 days sunshine, the rest overcast and a little bit of drizzle. We came down to Glencoe and had a week of super weather and the week after that it was mixed. We’ve had a great time.

RedToothBrush · 09/08/2021 08:55

I know that this is a novel concept but it rains in other countries too.

If you can't have fun when there is rain you are doing something wrong - you are not wearing appropriate clothing. Its not the weather thats wrong because there is always a chance the weather will be shocking wherever you go.

Also not every one actually likes blazing sunshine. Give me a holiday in Iceland over a beach in Spain anyday.

lazylinguist · 09/08/2021 08:55

Agree. For once in our lives we actually had good weather for our British holiday, but bloody hell my heart goes out to friends of ours who are in the Lake District this week.

We live on the edge of the Lake District. Some friends of ours are staying in a cottage fairly nearby. We went lake swimming and paddle boarding with them yesterday (managed to miss the rain). We've woken to lovely sunshi e this morning and no rain forecast for the next few days. Although... we're off to camp in Pembrokeshire on Saturday and the forecast doesn't look great!

rookiemere · 09/08/2021 08:56

Yes to those who don't like extreme heat abroad. I'm actually quite relieved we're not going to Majorca next week - I don't know what I was thinking of when I booked it, lockdown madness I suppose.

We struggled in Keswick in 25 degree heat in July, lord knows what I thought I'd do in 40 degrees.

Still hoping for Tenerife in October- that's 25 usually but with a breeze.

WeatherwaxOn · 09/08/2021 08:57

I was on the phone to a friend yesterday, who lives about 30 miles from me. I mentioned the torrential downpours we've had for the most part of the last three days. Friend has had blue skies and sunshine.

texasss · 09/08/2021 08:58

August is typically one of the wettest (and warmest) months, it's not like it's a surprise.

TempsPerdu · 09/08/2021 08:58

YANBU. We had a week’s ‘holiday’ in north Norfolk back in June - all week the weather varied between rain of the drizzle variety and rain of the torrential variety. At some points we were literally inside the cloud, surrounded by sea mist, and it was bloody miserable. Unseasonably cold as well. Wandering around the ‘tropical themed’ zoo in the drizzle with our 3 year old was a low point, as was arriving at a wind and rain-lashed seaside town after a trip on a heritage railway and attempting to find somewhere to shelter indoors (no mean feat given that social distancing was still in place).

I hate feeling damp all the time, the greyness and lack of light, not being able to window shop/people watch/generally mooch about (one of my favourite parts of holidays), needing to pack so much more equipment and then having to dry out wet clothes/wellies/umbrellas…

We don’t normally do U.K. holidays as they don’t appeal for numerous reasons, but on the rare occasions we do we always have a back up foreign holiday to look forward to. Obviously this year is different, but our Norfolk experience combined with trying to amuse DD at home throughout the rainy summer has prompted us to take a punt on a trip to Spain in the autumn. We are naturally cautious people, but at this point we’re long past caring about whether or not it’s likely to go on the red list!

MadeOfStarStuff · 09/08/2021 08:59

YABU

If people book a UK holiday they are well aware the weather may be shit. If they can’t cope with the possibility of rain they shouldn’t book a UK holiday.

We’ve had some lovely weather this summer, it’s not all been horrible and wet

CustardyCreams · 09/08/2021 08:59

Yanbu. Took my toddler on a very windy beach holiday a few weeks ago, it was not pleasant! Easier with bigger kids who can do historic houses. play board games, cope with being cold and wet etc. Toddler just wants to be outside making sandcastles!

Cukku · 09/08/2021 08:59

We're in Scotland. There is some rain at the moment - but just the occasional light shower. We have visitors and have been for some lovely walks in the Highlands and on a day trip to Edinburgh. It's been lovely.

Oh goodness, me too. Love 🇮🇸.
TempsPerdu · 09/08/2021 09:00

Also agree that this isn’t a new thing, and that August is usually pretty dismal in the U.K..

Westfacing · 09/08/2021 09:01

Of course there's such a thing as bad weather!

If you're at a seaside resort for a week with young children, on a budget, in August, how is it not bad weather if it rains heavily every day?
