To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

I don't know, the view from my Airbnb right now is pretty good 😁

@PuppyMonkey

No such thing as bad weather just poor clothing choices as they say.
I’ve got great wet weather clothing for dog walking still a pretty fucking miserable holiday on constant rain if you ask me!
weebarra · 09/08/2021 09:02

We're in the Cairngorms this week and the weather is fine. Cloudy, rainy, sunny, not too cold. The DCs were kayaking yesterday. This summer has been glorious at home in Edinburgh and it's Sod's law it's more iffy here, but we're in a nice cottage and not working!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 09/08/2021 09:02

I wonder if the "no such thing as bad weather/it's just bit of rain, you won't melt!" people are the same ones wailing that they're going to DIE in this heat!!! the moment the temperature creeps up to 22 degrees...Hmm

I hate it when people say this. Yes you can buy waterproof clothing but it’s just plastic and makes you sweaty. If it’s waterproof and breathable it’s expensive for a whole family. It’s also pretty miserable walking along with the wind and rain hitting your face and steaming up your glasses. It’s not much fun trying to avoid the mud and then get everything clean and dry for the next day.
Whattheduck · 09/08/2021 09:04

We own a caravan in Norfolk and arrived on Saturday until Wednesday. We’ve had sunshine and torrential rain with the odd rumbling of thunder but we love it here no matter what the weathers like.
My dd who’s 15 and her friend have still been out and about and we’ve been bowling and out for lunch.
Today we are going for a browse around the shops and will stop somewhere for lunch then the girls are going swimming and to the arcades whilst I sit in a coffee shop with my book.
Tomorrow they are going to an outdoor pursuits centre for a few hours.
You can still have an enjoyable holiday without it being constantly sunny.

@TempsPerdu

Also agree that this isn’t a new thing, and that August is usually pretty dismal in the U.K..
Except it's not and hasn't been. Not everywhere.
Beckham19 · 09/08/2021 09:05

We are currently camping, in Devon. I thought we would he washed away last night!! The rain and the wind, were horrendous! Kids slept through it and we've got up today and it's warm and we've had breakfast, with the tent door open!! Gotta make the most of it!!!

trilbydoll · 09/08/2021 09:05

We are camping and I am generally not too bothered about rain, I just put a hat on, but it is so windy. It was impossible to pitch the tent, poles have split, we've had to move to a more sheltered pitch. We can't put the shelter up for me to cook under so we are existing on takeaway. We are never camping in the UK again (not just because as it stands we don't really have a fully functioning tent!)

That is utter bollocks though, isn't it?

Who enjoys a holiday in the lashing rain? Some might be able to make the best of poor weather by wrapping up in waterproofs and heading out anyway. But it's not FUN to do so. And depending on where you're staying, drying out the wet gear is impossible. How do you dry a family's 4 sets of wet clothing in a tent or small caravan?

We had a UK holiday at the beginning of July and the weather was good. The mid part of July was roasting. August in the past few years seems to have been worse than June/July.

ViceLikeBlip · 09/08/2021 09:06

Dorset here. A lot of rain, but it's not been every minute of every day! And it's not like it's cold with it- it's the sort of rain that looks miserable from inside, but isn't such a big deal once you're out in it if that makes sense?

Younger kids tend to be quite resourceful about finding something to do even on a wet beach/rainy woods etc (I can imagine teenagers are harder to please?) I'm a lazy bugger though, so the worst thing about a wet holiday for me is that I can't park my arse on the floor while the kids are playing!

Doesn’t matter what you’re wearing if the sky is grey, the wind is blowing, rain lashing down, it’s cold, puddles and mud everywhere. It’s just grim. Blue skies and sunshine makes everyone feel better.
Natsku · 09/08/2021 09:08

Generally no such thing as bad weather, until you're on holiday and then there is definitely such a thing as bad weather! We went on holiday to Lapland this summer, there was a heatwave right up until the day we arrived, spent 10 days cold and wet, then on the day we left another bloody heatwave started. Its just rude, damn weather gods.

motherrunner · 09/08/2021 09:09

I’ve just got back from 2 weeks staying in Dorset and Devon. Mixture of sun, cloud, rain and wind. We prefer cool weather as we’re an active family and any weather over 20 degrees makes activity too difficult. The DCs prefer the rain as it makes body boarding and surfing more fun. We have proper waterproof clothing and walking shoes. I think if you holiday in the UK you need to be prepared for all weathers. It’s the UK. It won’t magically become sunny because we decided to go on holiday x date.

Kingsmede · 09/08/2021 09:09

Provocative post OP!

We chose to be in the uk, though would usually be abroad. Often The Netherlands so certainly no different weather wise. We have also spent holidays in Spain ( 5 weeks last time), Croatia, Greece and Portugal. My worst holidays have been high temperatures in Greece ( as now and far too hot to go outside) and a holiday in Spain ( where it rained for 5 days - there really is nothing to do on the Costa's without being outside - no indoor pool, no leisure centre, we spent time in the local hyper market....)

But please don't worry about me at the minute though, I'm in a luxury cottage in the countryside, long lie ins, a good book, tea in the garden, a picnic in the orchard, amazing views, a short cycle ride to the local pub where we drank in the garden yesterday.

Today a trip to a national trust property, a long ambition to be here to find out more.
Tomorrow, forecast is great so a trip to the local seaside town, with a booking for lobster and champagne.
We've rowed boats to an art gallery and toured vintage markets and sheds.

As I said, please don't worry about me on my uk holiday.

m0therofdragons · 09/08/2021 09:09

My friend was in Edinburgh yesterday posting photos in shorts and T-shirts with blue skies and we were paddling on the beach in south Devon. It was over cast but warm and I was wearing a light play suit. It rained while we drove there. It’s a shame it’s not a “Sunny” summer but it’s not as horrendous as the weather warnings suggest.

Whattodoffs · 09/08/2021 09:10

On 1st day of holidays in Scotland right now and it's lovely. Staying in a coastal town and it's just gorgeous x

MarshaBradyo · 09/08/2021 09:10

What’s the forecast like?

It’s been raining here a lot but due to stop this week

AssemblySquare · 09/08/2021 09:10

We’re going on holiday to the Lakes next week. I’m fully expecting it to rain, always does when we’re there! Anything else will be a bonus!

ViceLikeBlip · 09/08/2021 09:11

I do feel very sorry for the people who've shelled out crazy money for UK holidays this year. If you book a campsite at £20 a night then it's not really a big deal if you give up and come home a few days early. We usually camp 2-3 times a year, so it's not like it's our one and only shot at a holiday, and in normal times you can keep an eye on the forecast and find a pitch somewhere with only a few days notice. It must be really miserable for people who are not seasoned campers, who've laid out a lot of money on equipment and paid over the odds on a pitch that they had to book 2 months ago.

TempsPerdu · 09/08/2021 09:12

Also not every one actually likes blazing sunshine. Give me a holiday in Iceland over a beach in Spain any day

Very much agree that there’s much more to holidays than wall to wall sunshine. We’re not especially hot weather people either, hate sunbathing and would never do a pure beach holiday. One of our best ever trips was to Slovenia, where the weather was very much a mixed bag. Not been to Iceland yet, but I imagine I’d love it.

But with places like Iceland and Slovenia you still get the sense of novelty and adventure, the discovery of a new culture, with unfamiliar language and food, and the break from the U.K. news cycle. I love arriving in a new culture and trying to get under its skin a little bit.

Everyone’s different and has different priorities, but personally I just can’t get the same sense of adventure and escapism from a U.K. holiday.

there’s much more

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/08/2021 09:12

I got back from Northumberland on Saturday. Red hot for most of the week including a day in Edinburgh at 24 degrees.

Lindisfarne pic attached.

Plus we could have done a month in Slovenia for the price of a week’s holiday in Cornwall in August (more so than ever this year).

It's a bit mixed where I am. It's not cold but you'd need a shower coat and sensible shoes. You could still have a lovely holiday though.
