To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

We just had a week in Devon, weather was mostly dry, even got some sun. For us, the change of scene was a tonic.

Of course you can get clothing for all weathers but I wouldn't want to be camping in the rain with young children in today's rain. A muddy puddle walk when you can return to a dry and comfortable place is fun, being damp, cold and miserable while trying to entertain little ones is not.

Rubytoos · 09/08/2021 08:40

@PuppyMonkey

No such thing as bad weather just poor clothing choices as they say.
Some twat said this to me a few months ago. I’d posted on Facebook a walk we’d done in exmoor when it had battered it down. We were both wearing waterproofs and still got soaked. The dogs were wet through and it took 24 hours to dry everything out.
MsTSwift · 09/08/2021 08:40

We are somewhere quite popular coastal in a posh central apartment even that was only £1k not £2k big 2 bedroom place so way cheaper than going abroad. Plus everything seems super cheap here as we live in the south and we have come north. Smoothies here are exactly half the price of those in our home city our teens have noted!

BeQuietBrenda · 09/08/2021 08:40

@PuppyMonkey

The poor clothing choices thing is a well known saying, not me btw.
The over reaction to your comment of a very well known quote gave me a slight giggle. How DARE you! 😂
thelastgoldeneagle · 09/08/2021 08:40

Well, we're on holiday in Wales and it's sunny today. It is what it is - you have to make the most of things.

DanglingMod · 09/08/2021 08:41

It was lovely last week both in the place we were on holiday and back at home. Bit of rain overnight (a good thing) but pretty warm and dry every day.

The summer has been great so far in Scotland, the north of England and most of the Midlands and east coast. Sorry if it's been rubbish further south and east.

DicklessWonder · 09/08/2021 08:41

Just be glad you aren’t cycling Land’s End to John O’Groats this week.

whiteroseredrose · 09/08/2021 08:42

It depends what you mean by bad weather. I hated the heatwave. For me that is awful weather, particularly when camping and there is no escape. It was such a relief to get back to cool with a light drizzle.

Best abroad holiday ever was Iceland last year. Never got above 60F. We had the right clothing - Rohan waterproof quick dry - and had a wonderful time!

As a child we often went to the lakes and got soaked. Then enjoyed hot chocolate by the fire. We still talk about a great holiday in Cromer paddling in the sea with our Kagouls on!

LittleRedPill · 09/08/2021 08:42

Torrential rain is obviously miserable but showers are fine IMO. We were away last week in Devon and we had a lovely time. We were pretty lucky with the weather. Managed a couple of beach days and ducked into cafes/shops when it rained.

Cosywithcandles · 09/08/2021 08:42

Really does depend where you're staying and your budget and so on.

We've stayed in some beautiful cottages and holiday lets. If as a pp said you're holed up in a cottage with sea views, a tv, some games, good food a comfy bed, a budget to maybe book some rainy day activities. You can still have a nice time.

If you're in a tent hoping to have a barbeque and relying on the beach to keep the kids entertained that's different.

DanglingMod · 09/08/2021 08:42

South and South West, I meant.

@BeQuietBrenda Grin

I might go down in MN folklore as the person who invented it now rather than Wainwright or whoever it was.

FlyingScott · 09/08/2021 08:43

It’s the farmers we should feel sorry for.
The apparent issues with accurate forecasting must make it very difficult for them to plan especially at this time of year .

NavigatingAdolescence · 09/08/2021 08:43

We came away on Saturday - fair amount of rain but yesterday only had the odd shower. No rain forecast here till this evening meaning another day of adventures, and it gets drier/sunnier as the week goes on on the forecast. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Iamthewombat · 09/08/2021 08:43

@PuppyMonkey

OP said anyone on a British holiday *@Iamthewombat*
Yes, and the person who responded said, “YABU, we’re in the middle of a heatwave here!”

How is that relevant? Nobody in Britain is in the middle of a heatwave.

rookiemere · 09/08/2021 08:44

I always find I have to pack so much more stuff for a holiday in the UK, that it's a good thing we drive.

So you need wet weather gear, couple of sweatshirts and jeans, but also some light clothing on the basis it might be warm. It's all good as long as you prepare for it, but better to at least have some dry days.

MyOtherProfile · 09/08/2021 08:44

Sunny here. Couple of days with a bit of rain but lots of beach time in the sun.

However I also subscribe to the no such thing as bad weather motto of @PuppyMonkey so we all have wetsuits and go in the sea in most weathers.

MsTSwift · 09/08/2021 08:46

It’s about adjusting expectations. Yes I would rather be in Italy sunbathing before wandering round Venice but this is a different trip. Plus less environmental guilt!

Goldbar · 09/08/2021 08:46

It depends on the facilities. We stayed in a lovely cottage with a TV and washing machine within walking distance of the beach with access to an indoor swimming pool earlier this year. It was mostly rainy but didn't phase us since we swam most days, watched Netflix and played boardgames a lot, ordered takeaway and then ventured out to the beach in between rain showers.

If I was stuck on a campsite with an outdoor pool, I'd be laughing mirthlessly to myself about the idea of corralling young children in 6 inch mud being a holiday.

BeQuietBrenda · 09/08/2021 08:46

All my camping holidays as a kid in the Lakes usually involved lots of rain. All brilliant holidays, great adventures.

I don't think I could bear a hot sweaty night under canvas however. I suppose no rain/wind and early to mid 20's under canvas would be comfortable (for me).

However, being in a holiday cottage and it raining is hardly a disastrous holiday. The alternative being sat staring at your own, usual, four walls while it pisses down outside. Again, have had amazing rainy holidays - there's always a break in the weather at some point.

If you're comparing the weather during a UK break to the weather during a fortnight in Spain or wherever, you're obviously going to be disappointed.

Just be grateful you're on a blummin holiday and not stuck at home in the rain, bored, like me.

AntiFlag · 09/08/2021 08:47

@PuppyMonkey

I actually agree with this! I have really good quality waterproofs and it doesn’t bother me. But I love the rain. Sitting inside with the windows open. Going out for walks then coming home and having a hot chocolate in a blanket. Wellies and puddle jumping. I love the countryside in the rain. However a whole holiday where it’s raining is a bit different and I imagine can get very expensive when you have to pay for indoor attractions (which are always CRAZY expensive)
Goldbar · 09/08/2021 08:47

We also took our DC to the nearby soft play. It was one of the more expensive ones but had good coffee and was worth every penny.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/08/2021 08:48

We've just spent two weeks camping in the Gower and the weather was fine. The odd rain shower here an there and one very stormy night but the sun always came out eventually. Spent many sunny and warm days on the beach and we are all looking very tanned From being outside so much. It was my first time visiting the area and I was so impressed with how beautiful it is. We all had a fantastic time.

LizziesTwin · 09/08/2021 08:49

40mm of rain where I am so far today, not quite as much but torrential rain on Saturday. We were a big group intending to be outside over the weekend & instead were mainly inside. Showers off & on all day yesterday.

I feel sorry for anyone in any of the local campsites or caravans around here, this is normally a dry part of the UK. Barley is due to be harvested at the end of the week, it needs to dry out or it will rot.

@puppymonkey
Your clothing comment seems to have caused such huge offence😁
