To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

I don't mind a bit of rain but it literally rained with gale force wind from the time we arrived on Friday to when we left on Sunday Grin

We still had a nice time though but it would have been a lot nicer with even a glimpse of the sun!

RedToothBrush · 09/08/2021 09:13

The expectations of people going camping who can't cope with rain are ridiculous. Its the uk. Don't book a camping holiday if you aren't cut out for it!

Not all waterproof clothing is equal. If you buy a cheap one from the supermarket of course you will have a problem. Its technical clothing. Buy some thing of an appropriate standard. Just like if you are going on a skiing holiday you have to have appropriate clothing. Sadly camping in comfort isn't as cheap as a £30 tent from Asda and people who think it is have been sold a lie. Its one of these where you get what you pay for.

You can't cut corners and be surprised if your luck isn't in.

The sheer number of people who go walking in the Lakes etc who get into trouble because they don't respect the British weather and dress appropriately is really scary. As in it can cost lives.

We have always holidayed in the UK - DC are 14 and 12, and the only time we have been abroad was to Disneyland Paris.

Some holidays have been glorious sunshine, some have been pouring rain but we have always had a lovely time.

If you usually go to Spain, Greece, France etc - is it always sunny and red-hot?

Crunchymum · 09/08/2021 09:15

We go away next weekend and thankfully the weather looks set to improve (forecast is 21c and sunny spells everyday barring one day of rain at the moment)

Not sure how we'd have coped otherwise. Yes we would have done walks and yes we'd have made the most of it but it would have been miserable to not be able to use the beach etc.

flakeshortage · 09/08/2021 09:16

I'm camping in N Cornwall with extended family and having a great time despite awful weather. Pottering around, reading, nice food, reading the papers, playing board games,,visiting lovely little towns and villages. Occasional beach visit when the sun comes out. Just being with each other and chatting is great. However youngest dc is 15 so I do feel for those with little ones.

OhGiveUp · 09/08/2021 09:18

I don't understand why anyone would pay out to do exactly the same as you would do on a wet week at home.
As in.....stayed inside, read a book, watched TV, played board games etc, did the laundry, cooking etc.
You might as well save your money and stay in your own home.

BikeRunSki · 09/08/2021 09:19

@FleetwoodRaincoat

It's crap. I've had holidays like this and it's so miserable.

Just waiting for someone to come along and trot out the "there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing" blah blah ..

They did, 3 posts above yours!😱

Think we must belong to that relatively small group who are over the moon that our costal UK holiday has worked out wet and grey and cool. It's been bliss!

We had moved it from April (got a bit over-ambitious at the end of last summer, and hoped that by April all would be open again), and I was worried that August would be hot and humid, therefore ruining the holiday (for me, don't do heat!)

The rain and wind over the sea has been fascinating to watch, it's been cool and fresh and I've loved every minute. I feel lucky that it's not stopped us doing anything we had planned - although the view from the room is so lush that a week just sat inside watching the sea would have done me good, to be fair.

I can empathise though, as if it was sunny and hot, I would be miserable and feel it was close to wasted, so I can only imagine that is how anyone who prefers the warmer weather would feel if on holiday right now.

Polkadotties · 09/08/2021 09:20

This is why I don’t like holiday-ing in the UK. I don’t have any DC and for me a holiday is sitting round a pool, reading my kindle in the sun, exploring the local sites etc. I have a horse so I have plenty of proper water proofs and I spend a lot of my time in the damp and wet.
Yes it rains in the Med or the Caribbean but it’s usually a short sharp Chuck down then it’s bright again. Not a week or more of showery grey meh-ness

mogtheexcellent · 09/08/2021 09:20

Loads of kids having a whale of a time on the beach in Norfolk yesterday (including swimming in the rain). Plus its not raining all the time.

My parents and other locals say they can tell the difference between those who are used to UK holidays and those that like to go to Spain etc. Its the mardy faces and inflatable unicorns apparently.

EvenRosesHaveThorns · 09/08/2021 09:20

You just need a sexy raincoat

BeQuietBrenda · 09/08/2021 09:21

@TempsPerdu

Plus we could have done a month in Slovenia for the price of a week’s holiday in Cornwall in August (more so than ever this year).
This is the problem, the holiday let/camp site owners etc charging whatever they want (and who can blame them, they've a year of minimal takings to make up) so I can see how it would piss people off to spend thousands and not see what you consider value for money regarding the weather.

I think though if you go away in this country you should expect abysmal weather and anything else is a positive. Its not new, it's always been this way - there's a reason so many of you on this thread usually go abroard after all.

Book a UK holiday, expect 4 seasons in one day.

We always go away in the UK in August. This time last year it was a gorgeous holiday home in Deganwy (Conwy) and the weather was pretty similar to now - mainly pissed down. It was just lovely to be away and as we'd booked it in 2019 we escaped the ridiculous price hikes.

This year we saw what the prices were and stayed home. There's no way I'd pay, for example, £3k for a week in Dorset (the price my Aunt paid for last week). Ultimately nobody forced you to pay the prices being charged.

motherrunner · 09/08/2021 09:21

Agree @piratehooker. The first week of the school holidays the DCs and I stayed in the house all week - we can’t cope with the hot temps. I was glad that it rained on the day we travelled. I wasn’t looking forward to holidaying in the heat. Give me wet and breezy any time!

DemBonesDemBones · 09/08/2021 09:22

'Yeah sure because I love getting wet and muddy with a 3 and 2 year old.'

This is literally my 4 children's favourite thing to do Hmm

Junipersky · 09/08/2021 09:22

There are plenty of people that my heart goes out to right now, but holidays in the rain didn't enter my head.

Hopeisallineed · 09/08/2021 09:23

@Kingsmede I want to know where you are! Sounds lovely.

Littlecaf · 09/08/2021 09:23

It’s sunny here in the north west!

Hopeisallineed · 09/08/2021 09:24

I’m NW! It’s not here! 😂

MattDillonsEyebrows · 09/08/2021 09:25

This thread is bringing back happy memories of childhood camping holidays. My sibling and I freezing on the beach in the rain, wearing Shorts, wellies and kaggy’s. Never trousers because my mum always insisted that legs are easier to dry than trousers!
This seemed unfair at the time, however, with four children, I now can totally see her logic!!

Musication · 09/08/2021 09:25

It's why I just won't risk it. Must be total shit tbh I'd rather just stay at home in crappy weather and save my money for a decent abroad holiday when that's easier.

Mummytea24 · 09/08/2021 09:25

The sun is out in Somerset :) beautiful part of the world and love a rain walk by the sea watching the big waves crashing on the beach.

BeQuietBrenda · 09/08/2021 09:25

I live in a sprawling city centre estate.

Our holiday home last year was 3 times the size of our house, all mod cons, huge floor to ceiling windows with views across the water to Conwy Castle from the dining area, stunning sunsets if you faced the other way with the Great Orme towering out of the sea.

I also enjoy cooking and holiday cooking doesn't feel like work to me.

Whammyyammy · 09/08/2021 09:26

£2k for a week stuck in a caravan whilst it hammers down everyday...... I'll pasd

bert3400 · 09/08/2021 09:26

Yep we are in Scotland right now, raining, raining and more rain ...but tbh I don't mind. We live in Spain and I'm quite enjoying the rain and cold . But we are back home to sunny skies on Wednesday, which I'm really looking forward too .

Quornflakegirl · 09/08/2021 09:28

We’re off to Cornwall this week and the weather doesn’t bother me. The point is to spend time as a family with no rushing around and free to come and go as we please. I spent 20 plus years living in hot sunshine, it’s overrated.
