To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

For me bangers and mash would be just that. Additional veg is optional

Plumbear2 · 12/07/2021 14:01

Beans, no Gravy.

Bimblybomeyelash · 12/07/2021 14:02

I think every meal
Needs something green! Surely everyone at least has a bag of peas in the freezer?

Ivy48 · 12/07/2021 14:02

I’d always do at least some peas with it but that’s just me. I’ve noticed a few restaurants don’t add veg to this meal too

ZeroFuchsGiven · 12/07/2021 14:02

Bangers = Sausages
Mash = Potatoes

Why would you think it implies Veg too?

Sycamoretrees · 12/07/2021 14:03

Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips, exactly as it says on the tin. Veg optional.

Dontdripme · 12/07/2021 14:03

I do like beans with it

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/07/2021 14:03

Either sausage mSh and beans, otherwise sausage mash, veg and gravy. Preferably onion gravy, but I lose that argument at home.

StevieNix · 12/07/2021 14:03

Yeah I would at least expect some frozen peas on the side. I would assume veg was included as standard but then I always try and put some sort of veg with dinners

Imissmoominmama · 12/07/2021 14:04

I usually do it with mushroom and onion gravy (more of a sauce really) and broccoli and peas.

I don’t like meals without veg.

Clawdy · 12/07/2021 14:04

I do veg with lots of meals, but not bangers and mash.

Jizzle · 12/07/2021 14:04

Nah, OP, YABU .

If this was for every meal, i would tend to agree with you,. but when kids go to their grandparents and have bangers and mash, i wouldn't raise an eyebrow at the fact it was just that, sausage and potato.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 12/07/2021 14:05

I wouldn't have expected veg if someone offered me "bangers and mash", but I wouldn't typically make bangers and mash without veg, either.

onlyhereforthecake · 12/07/2021 14:06

YABU

As a one-off it's fine. Surely they can have veg at some other point of the day. I think the most unhealthy attitude is to lose sight of what is healthy as a whole.

It's a heavy meal, nothing wrong in skipping starter and having a very light pudding.

Bangers and mash - without veg - once a month at most is a hell of a lot healthier than bangers and mash - with veg - every week.

Dementedswan · 12/07/2021 14:07

I do sausage in onion gravy, mash, broccoli and green beans. Quite fancy that now!

Caramellatteplease · 12/07/2021 14:07

Yeah I'd generally expect veg with it. Beans at the very least

Although Grandparents meals I find are often very strange. Mum is famous for her pasta with spaghetti hoops.

MonkeyPuddle · 12/07/2021 14:07

We have sausage and mash pretty regularly. Always with veg. But that’s because it’s not a proper meal in our house if it doesn’t have veg with it.

MrsFin · 12/07/2021 14:08

I often mash other veg into my mashed potatos. Therefore keeping the "bangers and mash" thing technically correct.

The DDs used to love orange mash, or green mash.

Honeyroar · 12/07/2021 14:08

There’s a clue in the name..
I’d do bangers mash with baked beans personally. Most meals I’d serve would have veg, unless a chilli, curry or pasta dish, but not bangers and mash- it’s not what id call a healthy meal really, but it’s nice!

RampantIvy · 12/07/2021 14:09

No, having no vegetables is not optional. I find meals rather dull with no vegetables. I do bangres and mash with onion gravy, and two types of vegetable - usually carrots and broccoli.

safariboot · 12/07/2021 14:10

When I'm cooking, if I don't do veg it's because I'm feeling lazy. (Or there's none in, but there's usually something in.)

Though a good onion gravy will bring in some veg, albeit only a half portion.

Katefoster · 12/07/2021 14:10

I have to have some sort of salad or veg with a meal. My mum used to always put peas with bangers and mash- just adds abit of freshness into it!

AlCalavicci · 12/07/2021 14:11

Well if you went to a restaurant and ordered bangers and mash and it came with a veg you did not like you would be fed up / annoyed ( or absolutely livid looking at some over reactions on MN )

At home it is a bit different but bangers and mash is just that .
That been said I would always add beans / green beans / peas but each to their own

Mamamamasaurus · 12/07/2021 14:11

The name doesn't imply veg and I wouldn't be disappointed if it didn't come with veg, in a restaurant for example. But I almost always make veg with it. And the gravy needs to be thick, not that runny shit

Tiredmum100 · 12/07/2021 14:11

Bangers, mash and peas in this house as well, and bisto!
