To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

No food should be revolting, best way to make children think that only unhealthy food is palatable and mess them up for life.

You can LOL as much as you want, but if you can't manage to make a healthy drink for your kids, it's a bit sad.

It’s not a proper meal. It’s junk food. If eating vegetables and a balanced diet every meal is important then you wouldn’t eat crap like sausages. Expecting vegetables with it is like expecting McDonald’s to serve a portion of vegetables with s Big Mac.

Waiting for the drip feed that the OP hand rears her own pigs, slaughters and butchers them herself and her sausages are 100% pure pork with no gristle, rusk, or anything else that finds its way into store-bought sausages.

Lols, you should see me in my slaughter apron!

We sometimes have bog standard supermarket sausages, sometimes fancy butcher ones. I don't think sausages have to be crap, depends what's in them doesn't it? Isn't a sausage just a shape?

These are the ones I eat
Bit of mash and veg.. protein , fats and carbs and can be under 600 calories. Nothing wrong with that

I've never had bangers and mash without veg! We have two veg with ours - sweet potato mashed with regular potatoes and either peas and gravy or cheese and beans on the side, plus the veggie sausages,

Derbee · 12/07/2021 14:58

Our sausage and mash is always with at least 2 veg, usually carrots and broccoli. Sometimes mini corn.

I’d find it strange to have no veg

@FourTeaFallOut

I mean, make it for the kids with veg but I wouldn't come running to MN aghast at seeing it served without.
I'd describe myself as quizzical, not aghast. Plus this actually happened months ago but I think of it often so wondered what others had to say. In other words, I started a discussion on a discussion site. No running involved, I'm too full of mash.

I think every meal Needs something green! Surely everyone at least has a bag of peas in the freezer?
Not everyone even has a freezer, so no.

To me, bangers and mash is just that. Greens with it would be odd. I tend to have baked beans with it. But then it would be bangers, mash and beans.

Why so pompous? She knows her kids tastes and I don't find it particularly sad if they don't want a smoothie containing veg with their breakfast.
MiamiPants · 12/07/2021 15:01

Veg with every meal in our house - potatoes don't count as veg.

Same with my parents and PIL too.

So for me then I'd 100% expect veg with bangers and mash. Also - always gravy. Even if there are beans too!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/07/2021 15:01

Yes, fish and chips can be just that, but often you also have mushy peas.

And a pickled onion.

Yawn. There's always one Hmm

Not every meal needs to be perfectly balanced. There's nothing wrong with good quality sausages and homemade mashed potato. In fact, there's nothing wrong with cheap sausages and frozen mash occasionally.

Children won't explode if they don't have seventy types of veg a day!

BrownEyedGirl80 · 12/07/2021 15:03

Yorkshire puddings and peas

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 12/07/2021 15:03

Cant be ars@d to read the whole thread but i wouldn't serve bangers and mash without a green veg, no, it's just lazy.

@Caramellatteplease

Bangers and mash - without veg - once a month at most is a hell of a lot healthier than bangers and mash - with veg - every week.

I'm trying to work out what's wrong with bangers and mash and veg once a week....

Same.

We rarely have it, but when we do, we have veggie sausages, I mash the potatoes with creme fraiche and wholegrain mustard, and I make a big heap of whatever green veg we have in (usually broccoli, green beans, asparagus, kale).

Seems like a perfectly reasonable meal.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 12/07/2021 15:03

Every meal needs veg. No exceptions.

What the fuck must someone's diet be like if they think it's ok to have a main meal with zero veg in it?

ifonly4 · 12/07/2021 15:05

Bangers and mash is just that. However, if you're serving it as part of a main meal, we would expect and want something like peas on the side. If we're eating out, DH often orders this dish, but always checks if something else comes with it.

Inthemuckheap · 12/07/2021 15:05

I had an interesting discussion with a French friend during which she stated potatoes are a vegetable therefore why is another vegetable needed.

She's right but I like a bit of green on my plate and think peas go perfectly with bangers and mash (and onion gravy!)

Approaching hysteria over sausage and mash.

It's absolutely fine to have a veg free meal if you fancy it. A balanced diet is not measured over one meal.

LadyCatStark · 12/07/2021 15:07

Bangers and mash requires peas and Yorkshire puddings!

Do you have vegetables on your toast or mixed in with your cereal then?

Personally I love carrots and ice-cream Hmm

LavendulaAngustifolia · 12/07/2021 15:07

I would cook veg with it when at home cos I get green guilt. But at a pub lunch I wouldn't expect it.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 12/07/2021 15:08

@MorrisZapp

My DS won't eat any veg at all so grandparents know not to bother with greens. If it was just me then yes, I'd prefer a veg too.
Wait a minute, because your DS eats no veg, his grandparents serve the meal to everyone with no veg? Bizarre.

I'd forgotten how these threads went. More and more indignation over a pea-less plate.
