To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

I would serve mash but it doesn't imply it particularly, many restaurants don't include veg unless you order separately for instance (but mash would be included in price) personally I'd serve green beans or cabbage with lots of fried onions

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/07/2021 15:08

@Mamamamasaurus

The name doesn't imply veg and I wouldn't be disappointed if it didn't come with veg, in a restaurant for example. But I almost always make veg with it. And the gravy needs to be thick, not that runny shit
Damn right!

Proper gravy.

Thick gravy.

Preferably onion gravy.

And peas, green beans, corn etc. I would even have carrots on, and I think they are bliddy horrible. But I would like some veg.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 12/07/2021 15:09

Do you have vegetables on your toast or mixed in with your cereal then?

I don't eat cereal, and toast isn't a meal. The meals I eat are:

Breakfast - contains fresh fruit, same category as veg in my mind
Lunch - always contains veg or salad
Dinner - always contains veg or salad

ILoveShula · 12/07/2021 15:10

@Goatinthegarden, look at the ingredients of the veggie sausages.

I hadn't really thought about them until a colleague remarked that he was surprised that I ate processed food.

They are ultra processed.

Viviennemary · 12/07/2021 15:10

I wouldnt expect veg. But wouldn't think it strange if there was veg.

SapphireSeptember · 12/07/2021 15:10

Nope, I always like peas or carrots with my bangers and mash, and lots of gravy, although onion gravy sounds divine!

fourquenelles · 12/07/2021 15:10

My Death Row meal - bangers, mash, fried onions, gravy and frozen peas

Shodan · 12/07/2021 15:10

If I ordered bangers & mash and it came with baked beans, I'd be discusted , fumming and high rate. Grin Grin

Got to agree with this ^^ (And I'd probably be in dispair too) Bangers and mash with beans seems like a very gloopy kind of meal to me..

I would always serve some kind of veg, because a) it would look a bit unfinished to me and b) I'd probably over-compensate with too much mash.

Incidentally, I quite often buy the frozen mash now- with added butter it's really rather nice. And a lot less faff than making it yourself if you're feeling lazy.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 12/07/2021 15:11

Seriously, I cannot think of any occasion when a veg-less meal would be eaten in my house. Even when we get fish and chips, we get mushy peas.

I'm pescatarian, and veg is usually the main ingredient.

Perhaps there's a bit of a generational thing - you say it's your mum and your parents in law. Probably when they were kids veg with sausage and mash would have been less common.

I think we're more aware of what a healthy diet looks like now so parents are more likely to be trying to stuff their kids with veggies!

Deadringer · 12/07/2021 15:11

I never do veg with bangers and mash, i don't like gravy with it either.

PurpleDaisies · 12/07/2021 15:11

@BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand

Every meal needs veg. No exceptions.

What the fuck must someone's diet be like if they think it's ok to have a main meal with zero veg in it?

Every meal? Really?

I wonder what I should have added to my porridge this morning. Broccoli?

Oblomov21 · 12/07/2021 15:11

No.
I choose to always serve mine with peas and gravy.

PattyPan · 12/07/2021 15:12

@onlyhereforthecake

Perfectlystill you really need to change your recipes Confused

No food should be revolting, best way to make children think that only unhealthy food is palatable and mess them up for life.

You can LOL as much as you want, but if you can't manage to make a healthy drink for your kids, it's a bit sad.

I find smoothies revolting - it’s the texture for me. I loathe them. Fortunately it would never cross my mind to have lunch or dinner without veg so I don’t need them!
BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 12/07/2021 15:13

I bow to your food superiority!

Surely it's just normal eating? When I eat at my friends/families houses they also serve veg in every meal. I don't know anyone who would serve just meat + staple carb with no veg.

AuntMargo · 12/07/2021 15:14

Your right it is odd, of course you need at least one veg with it, but I would always do at least 2.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 12/07/2021 15:14

Fruit is in the same category as veg for me. And I add banana to my porridge.

nancywhitehead · 12/07/2021 15:15

@warmfluffytowels It sounds normal to me to have fruit/ veg with every meal. Of course not everyone is the same, but I think aiming to get fruit/ veg of some kind with every meal is pretty normal and healthy.

FAD2016 · 12/07/2021 15:15

Bangers and Mash for me would be either , bangers, mash and baked beans or bangers mash, gravy and peas/or carrots with an optional Yorkshire pudding thrown in

For people saying why would you expect veg, what do they expect when someone suggests ‘roast beef and Yorkshire Pudding’?

You should have said that every meal needs fruit or veg then.

What have you got against toast as a meal? It’s served me well for breakfast.

Maybe! TBH sometimes DH does the kids' tea and he'll do them just pasta and pesto with a bit of cheese, I always have to get them a bit of cucumber or celery or something to go with it!

I read something once about how you're supposed to just keep on and keep on putting veg on your kids' plates if you want them to grow up liking it, I think it sunk in on a deep level!

DP and PIL would always have veg with a meal, possibly in smaller volumes than me. I aim for half a plate ish.

I don't have veg with every meal, and I have a very healthy diet thank you. I just balance things out over the day/week. Obsessing over every meals contents for nutritional value must be exhausting.

I'm obviously abnormal then, because no - I don't serve vegetables with every single meal lol.

The majority? Sure, but I don't feel the need to shoehorn fruit and vegetables into every single meal I consume. This morning I had coffee and chocolate chip peanut butter on toast, for example Grin

I am yet to implode from poor health as a result.
