To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

Spag bol should just come with garlic bread 🤷🏼‍♀️

But then I put peppers and onions in the mince anyway so that counts as the veg.

Shepherd's pie obvs has peas or carrots in the mince.

Fish and chips from the chippy is just that. I don't like mushy peas. I've only recently started having pickles with it.

Pizza is just pizza thanks.

I wouldn't expect a side salad with a lasagne.

expatinspain · 13/07/2021 20:26

Bangers and mash with gravy is perfect. You don't need veg with it. The only veg that really goes with it is peas and I'm not a fan. It's not exactly a healthy meal, so bunging a portion of veg with it isn't going to change that!

kennycat · 13/07/2021 20:32

@Bimblybomeyelash

I think every meal Needs something green! Surely everyone at least has a bag of peas in the freezer?
indeed this! If I ever get to the point of running out of frozen peas i get very twitchy indeed. All meals need a mountain if veg in my book - I always feel very hard done by in restaurants because they never give many!
Boxingmum · 13/07/2021 20:37

I always have peas with sausage, mushrooms n gravy. I find it weird not to have green on the plate too

Clavinova · 13/07/2021 20:42

I think every meal
Needs something green!

I usually buy Waitrose Pork & Bramley Apple Sausages:

Bramley apple (13%), water, dried apple (4%), pea flakes Wink

Cheddar mash and tomato ketchup in our house - no vegetables or gravy. We do eat lots of green vegetables with other meat dishes - but not with sausages.

Bebethany · 13/07/2021 21:10

Made me smile 🤣🤣💐💐

SherbrookeFosterer · 13/07/2021 21:37

A meal should always be two courses, however simple.

So bangers & mash as the main is fine.

A salad or some steamed veg laced with olive oil, salt & mixed seeds as a non negotiable appetiser offers a balanced diet and also guarantees every scrap of vegetable is eaten!

SherbrookeFosterer · 13/07/2021 21:38

This is how Mediterraneans lure their children into eating healthily.

ElephantOfRisk · 13/07/2021 21:54

I prefer to have a couple of veg or a decent salad with every meal and whilst I might add onions, carrots etc to cottage pie, i'd barely count that as a portion if I was counting. I'm not a fan of mushy peas but might microwave up a bowl of frozen ones with fish and chips or might just eat some fruit after instead.

It's okay as part of a generally healthy diet not to have veg with every meal but i miss it. If I count back then I usually have at least five or maybe 10 portions a day so it wouldn't really worry me if I had a meat pizza for dinner with no salad occasionally. I enjoy them though and love a nice crisp salad with non veg meal, not for everyone but i think as a nation we don't do as well as we should with the fresh ingredients and fruit and veg we have access to.

Runnerduck34 · 13/07/2021 21:56

We always have baked beans with ours!

Quaggars · 13/07/2021 21:59

Not read all the thread (it's 20 pages long WTF lol)
If I was at someone else's house and got bangers and mash just by themselves, I wouldn't think anything of it.
Just nice meal.
If I was making it at home you'd be getting peas with it as well though Smile

Bebethany · 13/07/2021 22:00

Seriously !! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Fudgemonkeys · 13/07/2021 22:41

Always peas with ours and may be onions

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 13/07/2021 22:49

My favourite version would be posh sausages (M&S are good) and colcannon mash made with lightly sautéed Savoy cabbage.
Or I’d do fried onions and mushrooms and baked beans (although baked beans are rubbish since they took all the salt and sugar out Sad) and ketchup.
Tesco used to do a nice ready made root vegetable mash that you just shoved in the microwave, although I’d still do regular mash as well, and maybe peas.

TinselTinsel · 14/07/2021 00:55

I voted YABU that bangers & mash implies veg however I do bangers, mash , veg and gravy.

AlwaysLatte · 14/07/2021 01:36

We always do roasted vegetables with it and onions. But then our children don't eat the onions and hardly any of the vegetables!

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 14/07/2021 03:10

I wouldn’t assume it means veg too, no

BigWoollyJumpers · 14/07/2021 08:58
@BigWoollyJumpers surely you just reduce the servings? Like if you can’t fit in veg with your serving of pasta just have a smaller serving of pasta so you have room Confused
I have a smaller plate that I use and my DP has a bigger one, to reflect our differing appetites and calorie needs. But on both of them the ratios are still roughly half veg, quarter carb, quarter protein.
Why are you putting veg with pasta........ odd. As an Italian, I don't have a huge plate of pasta smothered in sauce as you get in most UK households. Small and tasty is the key.

We have small plates, way smaller than most people. And I never finish what's there. If we go out to restaurants, I barely eat half. I think most people eat a huge amount. I had a chat with a restauranteur friend, and suggested smaller portions, the biggest complaint he gets is that portions are too small - people are greedy.

A normal main meal for me is a standard 150g fillet of salmon with three broccoli spears - I often fail to eat all the fish.

MrsToothyBitch · 14/07/2021 09:12

I am not Italian but also find it bizarre that people try and force veg into pasta dishes. I won't eat them; it's desecration. The rottenest, nastiest trapped wind I ever had that wouldn't shift for 3 days was, I suspect, from a pasta sauce that someone had smuggled a load of veg into by blending.

As per @BigWoollyJumpers, I have also really trimmed down my portion sizes, it honestly doesn't take much pasta to fill you up and I'm working on adding less sauce all the time- again, actually much nicer with less.

MrsKoala · 14/07/2021 09:25

My Mum lived in Sicily for years as an au pair for many families before having me. She said every day she’d make a pasta dish which was very simple, just tomato sauce or olive oil, garlic and chilli. It would be served first then after that they’d have a meat/fish dish with either a big salad or loads of veg. She thinks putting loads of sauce and veg in pasta dishes is strange. It’s a British combination.

MummyMayo1988 · 14/07/2021 11:27

I put veg with mostly every meal.
Bangers and mash is usually accompanied by peas in our house.
I do think this is a bit weird. If I served it up without my DH and children would say "Where's the peas?!" 🤷‍♀️🤣

PaperMonster · 14/07/2021 11:31

When my daughter has pasta - either plain or with a tomato sauce, she likes a side order of peas!!

Tonight is bangers and mash! Mashed spuds for them, mashed celeriac for me. With mushy peas and broccoli!

Yummy - has to be Heinz though.

The worst sausage dish I have ever eaten is German bratwurst and sauerkraut. Sauerkraut - yuk. # tourist regretting her menu choice. Grin

MrsKoala · 14/07/2021 13:05

Oh my god, just the thought of what ketchup and mash would look like is turning my stomach.
