To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

Bangers and mash - without veg - once a month at most is a hell of a lot healthier than bangers and mash - with veg - every week.

I'm trying to work out what's wrong with bangers and mash and veg once a week....

Eleoura · 12/07/2021 14:11

I'd ALWAYS serve it with veg also. As a minimum- frozen peas. Onion gravy is mandatory too.

I guess just serving sausage and mash alone might come from war years/ration times? Yes, fish and chips can be just that, but often you also have mushy peas.

PurpleDaisies · 12/07/2021 14:11

I’d always do a veg with bangers and mash.

Northernsoullover · 12/07/2021 14:12

Growing up it was always just bangers and mash. I do however now add veg but no, I wouldn't expect it.

yourestandingonmyneck · 12/07/2021 14:12

I would always put veg with it, for myself and/or kids. I just always prefer some veg myself and always try to include it in kids meals.

However, bangers and mash is just that. That is how it tends to come in restaurants. You would need to ask if you wanted veg with it.

Crowsaregreat · 12/07/2021 14:13

Thanks everyone! Looks like having B&M without veg is not that unusual.

I should stress, I didn't complain or anything! I'm laidback about what DC eat when with GP, it's usually on the junk end of the spectrum but that doesn't hurt occasionally. I'd just never made it without veg so it struck me as odd that both DM and MIL made it that way. Ah well!

I agree. I would expect peas if I was told I was getting bangers and mash.

Feeling peas popping in your mouth through creamy smooth mash is one of life's great pleasures.

mbosnz · 12/07/2021 14:13

It's bangers, mash, and approximately five other veges in this manor.

Slub · 12/07/2021 14:14

We have fried mushrooms and onions with bangers n mash with loads of gravy it's still veg innit

NotMyCat · 12/07/2021 14:14

I would expect veg but I've been watched those Instagram reels on what I eat in a day and it seems most of those don't eat more than an apple a day or a bit of lettuce

Crowsaregreat · 12/07/2021 14:14

@Caramellatteplease

Yeah I'd generally expect veg with it. Beans at the very least

Although Grandparents meals I find are often very strange. Mum is famous for her pasta with spaghetti hoops.

Oof, pasta squared!

My DC were served vegetables in every dinner for their entire childhood. It’s hard enough to get five a day into them, without missing out a whole meal’s worth.

You are trying to figure out why sausages and potatoes every week are unhealthy? Really?

I suppose you can buy decent sausages from your local farm shop or butcher, but still. Bit heavy every week isn't it?

Youdiditanyway · 12/07/2021 14:16

We usually put peas and carrots with it but I wouldn’t expect it, I know plenty just have the mash and sausages.

Perfectlystill · 12/07/2021 14:16

Of course. It's weird to do a main course with no veg. The only time I wouldn't would be if I were hungover and then I'd do baked beans instead. But I wouldn't bother with making mash then.

YABU. Bangers and mash doesn’t imply veg. I would think it weird to have veg with it tbh.

FlumpyPoodle · 12/07/2021 14:17

I thought of the most iconic depiction of sausage and mash in our culture, admittedly there aren't many, and I landed on the famous Grange Hill sausage. They appear to serve it with peas.

In my heart though I think bangers and mash should have an addition of thick onion gravy and nothing else.

To think bangers and mash implies veg too?
lynsey91 · 12/07/2021 14:19

We like sausage and mash with fried onions. Sometimes we also have peas with it, occasionally baked beans.

Never ever have gravy though. Vile disgusting stuff

is it? Add some veg in morning smoothie or juice -they won't even notice, that's already 1 or 2 portions.

Veg for lunch: 1 more portions, usually 2.

veg as part of snacks: 1 more portions

There, 5 portions without even thinking about it. If you feed your children a healthy diet, they'll be fine. Better than people feeling righteous about serving a bit of green once or twice a day, and filling kids up with sugar, crips, squash, and stocking on processed and unhealthy "kids" cereals, kids biscuits, kids yogurts... all junk and sugar.

TheKeatingFive · 12/07/2021 14:19

I always do some kind of veg with all meals, but I find that my own parents don’t necessarily.

Crowsaregreat · 12/07/2021 14:20

I wouldn't think twice about sausage and potato every week. If I can get DC to eat it, it's a win. We have potato 3+ times a week in various guises, what's wrong with that? Kids need carbs.

If nothing else, a normal portion of mash is very filling, you don't need to add anything, or do you serve a spoonful of mash? Confused

TheKeatingFive · 12/07/2021 14:21

There’s nothing wrong with high quality sausages. Just watch the portions.

HoldingTheDoor · 12/07/2021 14:22

Why on Earth would it be weird to have veg with it?

Remaker · 12/07/2021 14:22

We never eat it because oldest DC and I don’t like sausages and neither of my DC like mash! Poor DH misses his B&M. When it was just the two of us we used to have it sometimes and it was always with baked beans which is his favourite. I’d prefer some steamed veg like broccoli. We buy frozen peas but they always end up being used on somebody’s injury when we’ve run out of ice. So if we run out of fresh veg there’s no backup and it doesn’t stress me out to have a veggie free meal sometimes.
