To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

I'd have they could have added baked beans if no veg, but hey ho, as long as it was enjoyed and it's not an every day thing.

MorrisZapp · 12/07/2021 14:47

My DS won't eat any veg at all so grandparents know not to bother with greens. If it was just me then yes, I'd prefer a veg too.

TwoLeftElbows · 12/07/2021 14:47

I wonder if this is a grandparent thing. It's the parents' job to get veg into kids. Grandparents - even if they spent years forcing their own children to finish their broccoli - seem to be more focussed on treats and sweets when it comes to grandkids. Hey-ho.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/07/2021 14:48

Bangers and mash is bangers and mash, obviously.
Potato is a veg, even if it's also a starch and not included in the five a day.

KatherineJaneway · 12/07/2021 14:49

Bangers and mash is just that, potatoes and sausages. If I ordered bangers and mash in a pub, those two ingredients along with gravy is what I would expect to receive.

Conchitastrawberry · 12/07/2021 14:49

I do veg but I wouldn’t expect veg if eating elsewhere.

pootleforPM · 12/07/2021 14:49

Peas are required here, or maybe broccoli!

gillysSong · 12/07/2021 14:49

No, there's no mention of veg.
Maybe onion and peas if you are having gravy.

Otherwise it could be with baked beans or egg.

Bangers and mash is not a treat though. There is probably more focus on healthy eating now than when the grandparents were younger though, but it sounds like they're just preparing the traditional meal.

Obviously not required, desired by some maybe.
warmfluffytowels · 12/07/2021 14:50

YABU.

I serve veg with mine, but if I saw it as "Bangers and Mash" on a menu, I would assume it was just that.

Twoforthree · 12/07/2021 14:51

I’d expect peas. Anything else is a bonus.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 12/07/2021 14:51

I would always serve veg with it, but wouldn't be horrified if it didn't come with it. Usually tenderstem broccoli and carrots or peas here. Or frozen veg if nothing fresh in as there is usually a bag of that floating around the freezer. Beans sound good too though. Now I want bangers and mash, and no bangers in the house!

onlyhereforthecake · 12/07/2021 14:51

The kids have mash about the size of two of their fists, a sausage each and some veg. They usually clear the lot. I might be just a greedy guts, what's wrong with things being filling?

nothing at all, that's the point.
Mash is enough on its on, no need to add veg on top?

sotiredofthislonelylife · 12/07/2021 14:52

@Mamamamasaurus

The name doesn't imply veg and I wouldn't be disappointed if it didn't come with veg, in a restaurant for example. But I almost always make veg with it. And the gravy needs to be thick, not that runny shit
Yay - I agree!!
BritWifeInUSA · 12/07/2021 14:52

It’s not a proper meal. It’s junk food. If eating vegetables and a balanced diet every meal is important then you wouldn’t eat crap like sausages. Expecting vegetables with it is like expecting McDonald’s to serve a portion of vegetables with s Big Mac.

Waiting for the drip feed that the OP hand rears her own pigs, slaughters and butchers them herself and her sausages are 100% pure pork with no gristle, rusk, or anything else that finds its way into store-bought sausages.

FourTeaFallOut · 12/07/2021 14:53

I mean, make it for the kids with veg but I wouldn't come running to MN aghast at seeing it served without.

SlipperTripper · 12/07/2021 14:53

Only onions in the gravy

Oh, I see what you mean! I guess the veg are there for nutrition, colour, texture and variety rather than filling them up.

No bangers and mash implies just sausage and mash to me. It has never come with anything else when I have seen it on a pub menu.

Cowbells · 12/07/2021 14:54

Bangers and mash should at very least have beans with it for DC and usually probably peasor broccoli and carrots too. For adults I'd do onion gravy and cavolo or broccoli. I'd be very disappointed if it came iwht no veg but I adore veg and think no main course is complete without at least two veg, ideally three or four.

NotMyCat · 12/07/2021 14:54

How is it junk food? If I was making it I would have high quality sausages (like the 95% meat ones) and potato, mashed up and veg

I mean if you're talking Richmond sausages and smash then yes, junk but I imagine most people aren't counting that as sausage and mash!

PurpleDaisies · 12/07/2021 14:55

Eating sausages occasionally is fine. I totally disagree that every single meal is important. A healthy diet doesn’t have to be an absolutely perfect one.

HoldingTheDoor · 12/07/2021 14:55

Mash is enough on its on, no need to add veg on top?

I'd rather give the kids a smaller portion of mash and leave some room for veg. It's about it being nutritious, not just filling.

Ah yes. Was waiting for the 'sausage and mash is akin to giving your child smarties and heroin' contribution.

Reassuring to see it appear. Nature is healing.
