To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

Not usually as bangers and mash mean sausage s and potato but I'd put some peas in too but not expect it.

HoldingTheDoor · 12/07/2021 14:23

I'd expect onions and at least peas with it. Or broccoli. Perhaps carrots too.

onlyhereforthecake · 12/07/2021 14:23

You can find veg and potatos mash recipes too, but sometimes you just fancy plain old mash Grin

WhyTheEffNot · 12/07/2021 14:25

Peas, sweetcorn, green beans, onions in the gravy, carrots…always veg with sausage and mash

HoldingTheDoor · 12/07/2021 14:26

Green beans or cabbage would work too.

ZenNudist · 12/07/2021 14:27

Bangers and mash does not imply veg. You forgot to ask "what are you making with it? ".

Bangers and mash with a side of veg, implies veg.

Grandparents seem to forget how to cook.

FayCarew · 12/07/2021 14:27

If I ordered bangers & mash and it came with baked beans, I'd be discusted , fumming and high rate.

I'm clutching my pearls at the thought of it.

knittingaddict · 12/07/2021 14:28

I certainly wouldn't assume a portion of veg and I've had with or without in pubs. When I make my own with onion gravy I would do either depending on what's in the fridge and my mood.

3luckystars · 12/07/2021 14:28

It means sausages and potatoes. That’s all.

Cocomarine · 12/07/2021 14:29

Would always do veg with it - not because the dish “needs” it, but because veg is nice and I want a balanced meal.

However, would not bat an eyelid if someone else just did the bangers and mash.

Perfectlystill · 12/07/2021 14:30

Oh wow @onlyhereforthecake, really?

Add some veg in morning smoothie or juice -they won't even notice, that's already 1 or 2 portions.

LOL at the idea of being able to put TWO PORTIONS of veg into a breakfast smoothiee for each child (and them not notice!).

I make myself a smoothie for breakfast every day but the idea of it having two portions of veg in it is revolting!

AuntieStella · 12/07/2021 14:31

YABU, it's bangers and mash.

If you want to add stuff, because you don't want to serve it like that, then it's bangers and mash with peas (or whatever)

I would however be extremely miffed if it did not automatically include gravy

LifeIsAMotorway · 12/07/2021 14:31

I would always serve with peas and gravy (maybe carrots sometimes), but I suppose it doesn’t really imply veg. Thinking about it, the last time I had it was at someone else’s house and it was just a mountain of mash with sausages and gravy. Not a single veg in sight.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/07/2021 14:34

Do people normally list all the sides when describing meals?

If my DDs ask whats for dinner, I'm just as likely to say sausages rather than sausage and mash... but they wouldn't expect just the sausages. (Although one would be perfectly happy if we just gave her that)

QueenBee52 · 12/07/2021 14:36

@ZeroFuchsGiven

Bangers = Sausages Mash = Potatoes

Why would you think it implies Veg too?

this ...

BikeRunSki · 12/07/2021 14:36

@Clawdy

I do veg with lots of meals, but not bangers and mash.
Me too. Usually piles of veg, but baked beans or onion gravy at most with bangers and mash. Make up for it with apple and blackberry crumble for pud!!
QueenBee52 · 12/07/2021 14:36

BEANS 😱🤔

ok Im lost.. 🤣

PhantomErik · 12/07/2021 14:37

I always put veg with meals, bangers & mash would have peas, carrots & corn on the cob in my house.

Pizza comes with a bowl of salad veg, pasta (that 2 of my DC like plain with grated cheese!!) comes with salad or separate bowl of peas & sweetcorn.

It wouldn't bother me too much if the veg was missing but I think it tastes better with vegetables & gravy.

Megan2018 · 12/07/2021 14:37

Always veg in this house-usually peas.

Crowsaregreat · 12/07/2021 14:37

@onlyhereforthecake

If nothing else, a normal portion of mash is very filling, you don't need to add anything, or do you serve a spoonful of mash? Confused
The kids have mash about the size of two of their fists, a sausage each and some veg. They usually clear the lot. I might be just a greedy guts, what's wrong with things being filling?

Bangers and mash implies those two ingredients and gravy, possibly onions HOWEVER a lunch or dinner is incomplete without at least one serving of vegetables. If someone served me a meal without veg I’d be asking where the rest of it was because veg should be half your plate!

WeAllHaveWings · 12/07/2021 14:38

I never have gravy with bangers and mash, always with beans instead which count as a portion of veg.

Only have gravy if it is a sausage casserole with carrots, onions and swede too.

MaintainingPositivity · 12/07/2021 14:42

Bangers, mash, onion gravy and peas which I mix into the mash with a shit tonne of butter Wink

Two of your 5 a day so practically health food.

FlumpyPoodle · 12/07/2021 14:43

I like vegetables that go with a meal rather than just being shoe-horned in for the sake of it. I don't like mashed potato so the bangers and mash thing doesn't matter to me, but a friend of mine cooks a roast chicken dinner with corn on the cob and roasted red pepper and maybe some aubergine or something, as well as the more usual sides, because she's very rigid about a dinner always having to have 5 servings of veg. It doesn't work for me.

PattyPan · 12/07/2021 14:43

On further reflection I think if I was ordering bangers and mash in a restaurant I would probably expect it to come with peas but at someone’s house I would have less specific veg expectations (although I would still expect 1-2 servings of veg for dinner)
