As a wife, would I annoy you?

DH and I work FT. He is a senior manager and I work in demtia care. He works Mon - Fri and I'm shift working.

I'm working all weekend, I love my Friday night TV and I like to engage with the tv. Probably a running commentary in his eyes. His days are filed with zoom calls etc mine aren't so I really enjoy my soaps and talk through them/with them.

He has one eye on the tv and another on his iPad watching sport. I've been told off for engaging and talking.

AIBU?

Yeah that’d be really annoying if it went on for ages.

Mansplainee · 02/07/2021 21:54

Yeah that would annoy me too, sorry OP

Terminallysleepdeprived · 02/07/2021 21:54

Yup sorry that would piss me off too

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 02/07/2021 21:55

I do tend to go on and on... It's my escape from work.

You talk to the TV?

tallduckandhandsome · 02/07/2021 21:56

Sounds like you and him don’t talk because you’re doing your talking to the TV. Is this the tip of the ice berg?

CarnationCat · 02/07/2021 21:57

It would annoy me. I like to relax and chat but not constantly. Sometimes it's nice just to watch TV.

SwanShaped · 02/07/2021 21:57

Depends. Does he enjoy the soaps and you’re talking over the dialogue? That’s annoying. Or does he not enjoy the soaps but also doesn’t want you to talk. That’s unreasonable. When you say engage and talk through, are you talking to the tv or him?

MeadowLines · 02/07/2021 21:57

It depends on the extent of it really. If it was a constant, or near constant, stream of comments, repeating what characters have said etc then yeah Id probably find it quite draining.
Could dh go to another room or wear ear phones while you watch your programmes - assuming it is only 1/2 programmes of course. More than that and it really wouldnt be fair

chickenyhead · 02/07/2021 21:57

I think it is your right. It might annoy you that he is on his ipad.

Assuming that you have other rooms in the house, he can go to one of those if it is sooooo annoying.

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 02/07/2021 21:58

@5zeds

You talk to the TV?
Yep, I answer people on my programmes before they do etc

I should seek to be a programme writer, although I'm a very good carer...

Yeah you sound incredibly annoying to be honest - I'm sorry

Hankunamatata · 02/07/2021 21:58

Some people are talkers and some aren't. Dh likes to watch stuff in total silence, I like the odd chat. If he is watching one of his programmes then I don't talk. If its something mutual then he let's me natter a bit but always get 'its because its TV Hakuna not real life' with an eye roll from dh lol

MaMelon · 02/07/2021 21:58

Do you mean you talk to the TV and tell him what’s happening during the programme?

If so, yes - I’d lose my rag with you.

AnnaMagnani · 02/07/2021 21:59

TBH he'd be annoying me for pretending to be present while actually watching sport.

nocoolnamesleft · 02/07/2021 21:59

Have the pair of you actually considered talking to each other?

5zeds · 02/07/2021 22:01

Yes I would find it annoying

Kanaloa · 02/07/2021 22:01

It would annoy me even if you weren't my wife to be honest. Although as he was doing his own thing it's not like you were spoiling what he was watching.

covetingthepreciousthings · 02/07/2021 22:02

I would find this infuriating. I would have to buy a seperate tv and watch somewhere else. I couldn't sit next to someone having conversations with the characters on the tv. Sorry OP!

singlehun · 02/07/2021 22:02

So annoying sorry

gospelsinger · 02/07/2021 22:02

DH engages with football on tv. I quite like it actually. It especially amuses me if he says what the commentator says 30 secs later.

toocold54 · 02/07/2021 22:02

If you are answering questions on the chase then YANBU but if it’s during things like corrie YABVU and I couldn’t cope with that.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 02/07/2021 22:02

Yeah that’d drive me absolutely insane. Sorry Blush

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/07/2021 22:03

@5zeds

You talk to the TV?
Don't we all sometimes?

Unfortunately it is annoying when it's all the time though

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 02/07/2021 22:03

I offered him a set of ear buds to watch his iPad.

I never bother/arent bothered when he reacts to sport on his iPad.

My comments bother him a lot, I dread watching celeb gogglebox tomorrow... I'm working al weekend, long hours - I just want some time to laugh and comment on something trivial
