To think we shouldn’t have another lockdown to protect vaccine refusers?

Everyone over 40 or in high-risk groups has now been offered a vaccine. The overwhelming majority, including me, have gratefully taken up the offer. A small minority have refused the vaccine, as is their right, of course.

Now we are seeing new ‘variants of concern’ and unvaccinated vulnerable people in some areas are now being hospitalised because they have been infected.

Some people are now calling for extended restrictions in these areas to prevent the new variant spreading. Why should responsible people who have been vaccinated be punished by yet more lockdown because idiots in their communities are too stupid or too selfish to get vaccinated?

A lot of people have only had the chance to have one vaccine so far or none at all. There are several people in hospital with the Indian variant who have had their first jab so not all are vaccine refuses.

You are wrong, sadly (I usually say you have misunderstood but someone said I say that too often so going for the blunt approach).

I’m led to believe the majority are having the vaccine. Yes there is percentage that refuse/ can’t have it and I agree to not lockdown because of those that refuse but that won’t be why we lockdown.

You are very naive if you think the vaccine is a miracle cure (or miracle prevention more accurately).

They also seem to be the same ones who don't really care for masks and other rules. I watched Ingrid Tarrant talking on GMB and just thought she will end up getting it and then want the NHS to take care of her. It's so frustrating that they expect everyone else to protect them with no effort from themselves.

Totally agree, once second dose has been offered to everyone eligible. If you don't want the vaccine then you are choosing to take that risk. Those vaccinated have taken a risk by having something that the side effects aren't fully known about. If you've refused, then now it's time for your risk.

My concern is for the people who can't have the vaccine.

I think you'll find that most people who have refused the vaccine are anti lockdown anyway so they'd be more than happy to go along with this.

I entirely understand why you say that, and I share your anger at the selfishness of the anti-mask/anti-lockdown/anti-vaccine mob.

However, the thing I’m most concerned about is the virus mutating and the more it spreads, the more risk it will develop into a vaccine-resistant strain. For that reason, we all need to be cautious, even if it’s primarily down to the selfish idiots who won’t gat vaccinated.

That leaves a lot of under 40s (most of my teacher friends) and all the kids who it’ll run rife through, ready to potentially mutate into something more dangerous.

If it would only for sure impact the willingly unvaccinated you’d have a point. But that’s not the case.

It’s very easy for most people to make the choice, including pregnant women. I am one. It’s recommended by RCOG etc, why wouldn’t you? The ones I feel sorry for are those who CAN’T get it due to allergies etc

I saw that this morning. Not doing herself any favours with that attitude.

So because I'm 35 it doesn't matter if I get ill? Or if my kids are left without a parent? Or if one of my household gets long Covid?

What about those who cannot be vaccinated through no fault of their own. I'm of the opinion that if you can be vaccinated you should without a doubt get it but I can't get on board allowing the unvaccinated to be collateral whenever that includes people who haven't actively made that choice and would love to be vaccinated. If it only affected those who made the active choice not to vaccinate then I would probably be on board but in many ways it won't only affect those people.

Lockdown is to protect the NHS (remember?). If "enough" people have been vaccinated and it moderates symptoms enough so that the NHS is not under pressure, despite increased cases, there will be no need for further lockdowns.

All the vaccine does is, hopefully, reduce the severity of the illness, it’s doesn’t stop transmission, although it reduces it, and doesn’t stop you catching it, although you shouldn’t get Covid as severe

The issue with the new variant is they think it is far more easily transmitted than any other, and in our area where cases are going up dramatically it’s mainly the 11 to 23 year olds getting it, and they are nowhere near vaccinated, and whilst young, may require hospitalisation.

Yes I agree it’s also shown that many over the over 50s that have not been vaccinated have caught it (mentioned in Bolton) and you have to hope more who have not been vaccinated will do so now. However you also dont know why they have not been vaccinated, allergy to something within the vaccine? Pregnancy? Issue over blood clots? Etc. You can’t just assume they didn't want the jab

It must vary so much between areas. My friends is there mid to late 30s are being vaccinated now. Everyone CEV I know had their second last month.

It's not easy at all, we have no data on the long-term effects, on the effects on the baby and, until you have it done, no idea on how YOU will react! Some people reacted very badly with high temperature after the jab, really not ideal when you are pregnant.

Good for you if you find the decision easy, but in a world where new researches have proven that even paracetamol is not as inoffensive as people pretend , you cannot say it's "easy",

As on other threads I will mention - the modelling suggests there is real risk of a wave higher than previously, dependent on transmissibility, even though we have high vaccination rates - in these circs hospitals would be overwhelmed again.

So fuck everyone under 40 and those older who are unable to have the vaccine?

We are not even anywhere near a situation where anyone who wants the jab has been able to have it.

Quite @picturesandpickles but any lockdown would be to prevent the NHS being overwhelmed, not to protect individuals who haven't been vaccinated, whatever the reason. Lockdown and all the restrictions have never been about protecting individuals.

The majority of pregnant women are too young to have been offered the vaccine yet anyway. Even if they want it because of the extra risks of covid in the 3rd trimester.
