To think we shouldn’t have another lockdown to protect vaccine refusers?

Everyone over 40 or in high-risk groups has now been offered a vaccine. The overwhelming majority, including me, have gratefully taken up the offer. A small minority have refused the vaccine, as is their right, of course.

Now we are seeing new ‘variants of concern’ and unvaccinated vulnerable people in some areas are now being hospitalised because they have been infected.

Some people are now calling for extended restrictions in these areas to prevent the new variant spreading. Why should responsible people who have been vaccinated be punished by yet more lockdown because idiots in their communities are too stupid or too selfish to get vaccinated?

If a vaccine is 90% effective that's still one in ten of the most vulnerable who could potentially end up hospitalised or dead.

Apart from the younger adults who haven't even been offered the vaccine, children are not getting it at all and they can still get seriously ill with Covid. I wouldn't mind keeping a few restrictions (masks, some distancing, limits on numbers indoors) to stop children ending up with damaged hearts for example.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 17/05/2021 22:45

@Peaplant20

Bit selfish considering a huge amount of the population haven’t been offered one let alone two doses. Several categories of people who are higher risk haven’t been prioritised so haven’t been offered the vaccine yet either, such as asthmatics and pregnant women. Think we need to remember this.
Bit selfish for small subsets of people to expect the world to grind to a halt for them.

@VaccineWonder

I’m 44 and I’ve not been offered the vaccine yet!
Well you have because anyone over 38 is eligible so you can go on the national website thingy and book. You don’t have to wait for a letter/text. Happy booking!
Feckitimbuggard · 17/05/2021 22:48

I'm over 40 and haven't even got a date for my 1st so what you are saying is not true for every area

AHobbyaweek · 17/05/2021 23:02

@freakyfridays and @InDreamland
I'm with you. I have made the decision to wait until I have had my baby. I have read the research and in the research circles they agree there is not data saying it is safe (or as safe as they are allowed to say it is) but some groups have decided that on probability of risk to offer it to pregnant women over the risk of getting Covid.
But the decision to get or wait is with the person getting the vaccine.

Before others jump on me to say "doctors say" or "don't get your research from Facebook" I have done my own research and reading on the actual scientific research released which I am used to reading for my job. I am encouraging others in my family to get the vaccine just I'm not willing to take this particular unknown risk for my unborn child.

It doesn't work that in Scotland. You're called in by your GP surgery, you can't book online.

Peaplant20 · 17/05/2021 23:44

@osbertthesyrianhamster it’s not a small subset unfortunately it’s the vast majority of people under 40 that haven’t had one or both doses yet.

CherryLemonade · 17/05/2021 23:44

@AHobbyaweek I wouldn't risk the vaccine whilst pregnant either Flowers

ozymandiusking · 18/05/2021 00:32

I said months ago. If you Choose not to have your vaccination and you catch Covid, do not come running to the NHS for treatment.
Choices have consequences.

MercyBooth · 18/05/2021 00:44

@ozymandiusking Including the ones who obeyed lockdown to "protect" the NHS? 95% compliance there was. Restrictions arent quite over yet so to quote Father Ted.................careful now

KaleSlayer · 18/05/2021 00:51

🤣🤣🤣

It really doesn’t matter what you said months ago. The NHS will treat everyone, it doesn’t discriminate.

LunaMuffinTop · 18/05/2021 01:07

I’m going to get my 2nd vaccine tomorrow I lost 2 family members 10 days apart to Covid all my family have had the vaccine the only ones who haven’t are my 7 year old niece, my 18 month old niece and my husband who has a serve needle phobia he faints at the sight of a needle and because of that he point blank refuses to get the vaccine I’ve offered to get him tattoo numb and we’ll test that and if that works then he will go and get the vaccine. My friend can’t have the vaccine because he’s allergic to them and he’s been offered no alternative he has just been left unvaccinated.

FuriousFemale · 18/05/2021 01:16

sadly op it doesn't work like that. A large number of people not taking the vaccine can impact us all for the reasons already stated up thread.

It drives me mad hearing people say their decision impacts only them and no one else, the vaccine doesn't stop transmission etc etc. Yes it's their decision but to make it on incorrect information is really frustrating

  1. Not everyone can take the vaccine. Should we just let pregnant women and their unborn babies take their chances because they are unvaccinated?
  1. I had to drive 35 miles for my first jab. Not everyone can do that.
  1. Only 30% of the U.K. population is fully vaxxed.
  1. 45% are completely unvaccinated.
  1. The other 25% like me have had the first dose.
  1. My second dose isn't until the end of July. My brother isn't much younger than me and he hasn't even had his first yet.
  1. Matt Hancock said those in hospital "are" eligible. They may not have been when they got covid.
  1. People who have had the vaccine can still be hospitalised with covid.
  1. People who haven't been vaccinated because their age group is not deemed to be as high risk from covid can still be hospitalised with covid.
  1. Vaccines don't work well in everybody.

  2. Vaccines don't work 100% in anybody.

That is just in your head though, and not actually reality. You live like that if you want.
GlitterNails · 18/05/2021 02:13

I am CEV and should have been done in group 4 but unfortunately due to a series of cockups and other complications with the NHS sorting it out I only had my first five weeks ago. Had they not just brought the second jab forward to eight weeks I wouldn’t have had my second until July.

And I’m not the only CEV person in this boat as I know many were having the same issues I had too.

I still haven’t left my house but would really like to start living again sometime soon.

This is just a general comment in that no, not all CEV have had both jabs.

GreatBritishBummertime · 18/05/2021 06:20

If we need to lockdown again it would be for the NHS, not much point refusing it.

I am coming round to vaccine passports though. IF an area is known to have a higher than average transmission rate, why should vaccine refusers to able to swan around restaurants and indoor leisure spreading? If there's a valid clinical reason like pregnancy, or you just haven't been offered it yet I'd make you exempt.

GappyValley · 18/05/2021 07:45

@PrincessNutNuts

  1. Bollocks - pregnant women can safely have the vaccine. They have been in other countries, they have been here
If they chose to disregard medical advice, that’s their look out
  1. Also bollocks. One fully vaccinated person has been hospitalised, and they were described as ‘very frail’
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/05/2021 07:46

Yesterday I heard from a friend of relations of hers in their 50s who are refusing the vaccine, not for any medical reason. But they’re expecting to be able to go on holiday as usual to one of the European countries which is likely to be on the cards for holidays again soon.

Friend fervently hopes that they will not be allowed to go without proof of vaccination, since she thinks that’s the only thing likely to change their minds.

Must say I agree with her, so 🤞.

CheeseIsMyJam · 18/05/2021 07:50

So you're not bothered about protecting the under 40s? We don't matter?

Under 40s are not at great risk of complications of the disease.
borntobequiet · 18/05/2021 07:55

YABU because it would be to protect the NHS, and the population as a whole, not vaccine refusers.

x2boys · 18/05/2021 07:57

I live in Bolton in the post code of particular concern,I'm fully vaccinated as is my DH,I think people are getting it now, they are offering the vaccines to people over the age of 16,there were massive ques at the Essa academy over the weekend I believe which is a vaccine hub ,I hope this isn't to little to late .

MargaretThursday · 18/05/2021 07:59

Bollocks - pregnant women can safely have the vaccine. They have been in other countries, they have been here

They can't say yet whether it's safe for pregnant women. It's not just about if they immediately lose the baby, but there could be issues after birth that wouldn't be coming out in enough numbers yet. Look at Thalidomide, that took 5 years for doctors to make the connection. I'd expect it to be quicker now because I'd expect them to be looking out for it however, let's say it also causes missing limbs.
There are 60 babies a year born with missing limbs in the UK (my dd is one of them). Most of them for an unknown cause.
How many people in the UK so far have had both injections and then given birth? I'd suspect very few. So even if it doubled the risk, I doubt it would yet be statistically significant.

I don't think it's unreasonable for a pregnant lady to be nervous. I would myself, and I am generally pro vax.
