Vacuuming every day.

Normal right?! I have two children - two messy children, a dog that constantly sheds and a messy dp! It just needs doing. I’ve always done it every day unless I’ve been extremely busy or ill or something - I have a cordless now so not much effort.

Anyway. Dp has always said how unnecessary it is and how it has damaged the carpet.

Our upstairs carpet desperately needs replacing as gone thin and frayed in places but it’s been down for 10 years and was put into the house when it was refurbished before it was sold to us. The carpet was relatively new when we moved in but I think it was quite cheap but has done us okay. It’s not damaged because I’ve vacuumed every day - it’s because it’s old and probably cheap at the time. It’s pretty clean just old.

We are getting new soon hopefully if we can afford it and says that I’m not allowed to vacuum it every day as I’ll ruin it and it’ll be a waste of money getting new carpets.

Aibu to think he’s being an asshole?! Surely vacuuming every day keeps a carpet in good condition? Says I need to do it every day few days...

Our downstairs carpet is newer than upstairs and it’s fine.

When we get new carpet aibu just vacuum it every day? I tend to do both up and downstairs every day in one go. It’s a small house. Takes about 10 minutes with my cordless dyson longer if using my non cordless.

He’s literally hoovered about 3 times himself since we’ve lived here. He just doesn’t get it!

I Hoover about once a week, at most.

KoalaOok · 13/04/2021 11:42

10 years is good going for a carpet

OrangeRug · 13/04/2021 11:44

I vacuum every day too and we have quite expensive carpets that were fitted in 2019. Wear and tear and everyday living will damage carpets even if you don't vacuum every day. I can't stand mess and dirt (we have a toddler and two long haired dogs) so I'll take the risk.

Silverfly · 13/04/2021 11:44

I agree with DP that hoovering every day seems excessive. But I agree with you that the worn carpet is more likely to be due to the quality of the carpet than the frequent hoovering.

Justmoveonin · 13/04/2021 11:45

I have a toddler and golden retriever and if I miss a day of vacuuming I can tell! The fur and general toddler crumbs, stones from the garden etc get everywhere

YANBU to vacuum every day and I doubt it’s damaging the carpet unless you have some strange vacuum 😂

JensonsAcolyte · 13/04/2021 11:45

I have two dogs and three kids and no one would ever describe me as cleaning obsessed, but I hoover at least once a day downstairs. And mop the kitchen floor several times a day as it leads to the garden and the dogs are in and out.

I would absolutely describe you as that. How do you hold down a job when you spend half the day cleaning?
KingdomScrolls · 13/04/2021 11:48

I don't hoover upstairs everyday, pets and food don't go upstairs and no shoes so no need. Downstairs I do kitchen and dining room, living room most days because, toddler. Seems a bit excessive to hoover the whole house every day.

fairburn · 13/04/2021 11:48

I vacuum around twice a day, especially kitchen and main living/dining area.

It's not weird.

Once a week is gross

Happycat1212 · 13/04/2021 11:50

I Hoover several times a day never mind once, I have 4 kids though so I'm constantly needing to

PivotPivotPivottt · 13/04/2021 11:51

I hoover at least once a day there's no way I could get away with doing it less than daily with the mess my children make. I only do upstairs about once a week but I should really do it more often I have a dark carpet and every single bit of dust and fluff shows up on it. I just can't be bothered dragging my shark up and down the stairs any more than once a week though!

Unexpectedbaby · 13/04/2021 11:51

I vacuum downstairs and the stairs most days, upstairs every few days.

2 indoor cats with a downstairs litter tray and a 4 year old. If I didn't there would be fur and potentially cat litter tracked into the carpet. In fact some days I will do the living room morning and evening if it looks like it needs it.

Cordless dyson so it's easy to grab and run round as and when.

xxxJess123xxx · 13/04/2021 11:52

I hoover once a day without fail. 2 small children and a cat x

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 13/04/2021 11:53

I do it once a week but I don't have kids or a dog.

I don't think there are any credible sources that say vacuuming damages carpets. If a carpet is thin and frayed, that's from people walking on it a lot.

If you've had a decade out of what you suspect was cheap carpet to begin with, that's not bad going at all.

Your husband should probably be doing more cleaning in his own damn house but that's a different thread

PivotPivotPivottt · 13/04/2021 11:54

It takes me less than 5 minutes to vacuum. I also have a spray mop and it takes a couple of minutes and most to blast it around the kitchen and hall, when I had a dog I done this multiple times a day. It takes hardly any time out of my day when it's kept on top of every day.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 13/04/2021 11:54

My apologies -- partner, not husband.

JensonsAcolyte · 13/04/2021 11:54

Well tbf I probably don’t do it that much when I’m actually working but I’m furloughed.

And it’s a ten minute job max. The mop is a squirty one so I mop up any muddy prints as they appear, I’m not giving it the full mop and bucket treatment several times a day.

Juanbablo · 13/04/2021 11:54

I Hoover downstairs every day. We have wood/tile floor and a rug in the living room. I have a dog that sheds like mad, a cat and 3dcs who are in and out of the back door all the time. I mop every day too. Upstairs is carpeted and I Hoover once a week up there as the dog doesn't go up there and no one wears shoes upstairs.

nancywhitehead · 13/04/2021 11:56

I hoover less than once a week, there's only me and my partner and we're not messy. I clean the kitchen floor but the rest of the house just doesn't need it that often.

But surely it's just a matter of personal preference?

You prefer hoovering daily, your husband doesn't think it's necessary. But if you are the one doing it I don't see his problem. It seems unlikely that the hoovering would be damaging the carpet more than just everyday wear and tear and age.

He will probably get less protective about the new carpets once they have been there for a while anyway.

LadyEloise · 13/04/2021 11:57

KoalaOok "Ten years is good going for a carpet"
Don't tell my Mum and Dad that. There's is down 50 years. Still looking fairly good except on the stairs. The ghastly patterns hide a lot.

MsAwesomeDragon · 13/04/2021 11:59

Oh dear, I knew I had low standards of housekeeping, but I really, really didn't think anyone actually hoovers daily. We're lucky if it's weekly in my house, quite often it gets left for a couple of weeks Blush

Hey ho. If you want to hoover every day, carry on. I can't see that it's the hoovering that's damaged your carpets, more likely to be the age. Although, having said that, my carpets have all been down at least 12 years and none of them are worn down yet (they may have a variety of stains from surviving 12 years of my children), so maybe my lax approach to hoovering is the way to go?

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 13/04/2021 12:02

I think with a dog that sheds it definitely needs doing every day if you want to prevent dog hair getting everywhere. To be honest I don't but we have got used to having quite a lot of hair around and we are quite a scruffy family in general, most visitors would not be ok with it. Anyway it's certainly not obsessive cleaning like those people who get through a bottle of bleach a day and never sit down. I think you dh needs to work out which side his bread is buttered on, rather than being so ungrateful for all your hard work.

81Byerley · 13/04/2021 12:02

Dirt and grit damage carpet fibres, so you are right!

inappropriateraspberry · 13/04/2021 12:03

I vacuum the family living room every day - 2 cats and 2 children! I'm amazed every day at how much dust it picks up as well!
The rest gets done once or twice a week. It won't be damaging your carpets though, unless you've got a bad vacuum cleaner.
If the carpet is a cheap polypropylene one, then 10 years is pretty good going. If it's wool, then I'd expect it to last longer.

3ormoredogs · 13/04/2021 12:05

I Hoover every day too!
We have DC and dogs though. If we didn’t it would be disgusting.
