Vacuuming every day.

Normal right?! I have two children - two messy children, a dog that constantly sheds and a messy dp! It just needs doing. I’ve always done it every day unless I’ve been extremely busy or ill or something - I have a cordless now so not much effort.

Anyway. Dp has always said how unnecessary it is and how it has damaged the carpet.

Our upstairs carpet desperately needs replacing as gone thin and frayed in places but it’s been down for 10 years and was put into the house when it was refurbished before it was sold to us. The carpet was relatively new when we moved in but I think it was quite cheap but has done us okay. It’s not damaged because I’ve vacuumed every day - it’s because it’s old and probably cheap at the time. It’s pretty clean just old.

We are getting new soon hopefully if we can afford it and says that I’m not allowed to vacuum it every day as I’ll ruin it and it’ll be a waste of money getting new carpets.

Aibu to think he’s being an asshole?! Surely vacuuming every day keeps a carpet in good condition? Says I need to do it every day few days...

Our downstairs carpet is newer than upstairs and it’s fine.

When we get new carpet aibu just vacuum it every day? I tend to do both up and downstairs every day in one go. It’s a small house. Takes about 10 minutes with my cordless dyson longer if using my non cordless.

He’s literally hoovered about 3 times himself since we’ve lived here. He just doesn’t get it!

I vacuum every day downstairs and once a week upstairs. 3 adults and a non shedding dog here who isn't allowed upstairs. I think ten years is pretty good for carpets, I doubt the vacuuming has made any difference to how long they have lasted.

JustMeAndWheatley · 13/04/2021 13:05

I do downstairs most days and upstairs every couple. It’s much quicker and easier to stay on top of it, I think.
I have two very hairy dogs.

JustMeAndWheatley · 13/04/2021 13:06

Dyson cordless was the game changer for me. It no longer feels like an ordeal to get out the vacuum cleaner.

thebillyotea · 13/04/2021 13:06

How does it take 5-10 minutes? I have a one bedroom flat and it takes me at least 30!

if you were hoovering more often, it wouldn't take you that long.

we are talking about a quick hoover of the floor, not getting all your brushes out and dust the shelves, hoover the skirting boards, hoover the blinds, move beds and sofa to hoover underneath and under the cushions etc.. Grin

I can efficiently hoover my entire house in less than 30 minutes, it's not a full spring clean.

nitsandwormsdodger · 13/04/2021 13:07

Hoover as much as you like
It's only a problem if you are doing it out of stress
Can't stop
OCD etc

trevthecat · 13/04/2021 13:07

I hoover the hall and dining room most days. Laminate and rug in front room, hoovered maybe every 3-4 days but no shoes or food in there. Also we don't have a dog. We do have a cat but he's antisocial

fairburn · 13/04/2021 13:09

@Gwenhwyfar

"Once a week is gross"

Ha ha. I live alone and do it once every two to three weeks. My place is not gross.

Ok maybe not gross, but bloody dusty
towers14 · 13/04/2021 13:09

Dh does it every other day under my instruction, he wouldn't bother otherwise. We have a lab whose hair is not actually attached to his body! So needs doing. Upstairs once a week if that.

ineedaholidayandwine · 13/04/2021 13:10

I also vacuum every day, 4yr old who drops crumbs and 2 cats who leave fluff everywhere.
I don't do the bedrooms daily though, no cats allowed in them.

Felifox · 13/04/2021 13:13

We used to hoover daily when we had 2 dogs and a cat, I'm on my own so do it less frequently now.

hannayeah · 13/04/2021 13:17

The carpet life depends on the type, I think.

We vacuum the kitchen daily. A fluffy dog spends most of her time there.

QueenPaw · 13/04/2021 13:19

I do a 5 min hoover once a day, only because the cat likes to drag his cat litter everywhere! Only the living room/kitchen, I ignore everything else Grin

bambootle · 13/04/2021 13:22

Omigod, if I was vacuuming every day (I'm not, but IF I was less crap than I am) and my DH dared to open his mouth to moan about it I'd be so pissed off. Ungrateful sod.

I should def hoover more often. We have a dog and messy kids, and I have a mild dust allergy.

YANBU.

lazyarse123 · 13/04/2021 13:23

You'd die in my house. I just changed my bed and a big dust bunny flew out from under the drawers. Just kicked it back under.
I have spent too many years keeping things pristine now I do it when I can be arsed. No pets or young kids though.

Tinkling · 13/04/2021 13:23

I hoover daily (downstairs) but only do upstairs once a week. We don’t really use our upstairs though, except for sleeping. When we come down in the morning we don’t go back up until bedtime.

Taikoo · 13/04/2021 13:24

Your DP sounds like a lazy toad.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 13/04/2021 13:24

It's so dependent on who lives with you, and how much they're in the house.

When it was just me and my husband, both working full time out of the house it only needed doing once a week, unless we actually made a mess/dropped something etc. Now we're all here all day, every day and have added two toddlers and two cats... it needs doing at least once a day downstairs.

User5747384 · 13/04/2021 13:27

He's being ridiculous, I would expect to replace a carpet after 10 years there is no way I will get 10 years out of my current carpet I will definitely be replacing it before 10 years.
I don't think hoovering everyday is too much when you have kids and a dog.
He also needs to stop being lazy with housework.

ineedaholidaynow · 13/04/2021 13:32

Is it mainly women who feel the need to hoover more than once a day?

Not hoovering every day is not lazy. I suppose I am in the camp that there is more to life than housework.

I’m sure I’m not the only person who has a dog who as soon as they have put the hoover away a new clump of dog hair suddenly appears!

user1471462428 · 13/04/2021 13:33

I think it depends on your lifestyle; if you’re at home with children and pets then I could see the need but if you’re working and only doing the night time routine then I don’t see the need. Shoes on or off must make a massive difference

ImAlrightThanx · 13/04/2021 13:44

Competitive hoovering, now?
I do mine every 2-3 days, but I live alone with no pets. They don't get very dirty.

No. I don't hoover once a day - lucky if I bother every 4-5 days. Upstairs would be done once a week or less. I agree, life is too short and miraculaously my house is not gross 😄
MargosKaftan · 13/04/2021 13:46

Hoover upstairs once a week - downstairs needs to be swept / mopped daily. We have wooden floor downstairs though, would you consider that? Oh and no shoes indoors and no food upstairs.

Iamblossom · 13/04/2021 13:48

Yep. Every day downstairs here too.

2 dogs (1 a black lab), 2 kids.

I dehair the sofa the dogs are allowed on and their cushions on the chairs in the kitchen and then hoover play room, kitchen and hallway, all laminate or tiles.

Every day that the cleaner doesn't come and do it anyway, which is twice a week and my favourite days.

Iamblossom · 13/04/2021 13:49

And I work full time, from home. It is possible to do both.
