Vacuuming every day.

Normal right?! I have two children - two messy children, a dog that constantly sheds and a messy dp! It just needs doing. I’ve always done it every day unless I’ve been extremely busy or ill or something - I have a cordless now so not much effort.

Anyway. Dp has always said how unnecessary it is and how it has damaged the carpet.

Our upstairs carpet desperately needs replacing as gone thin and frayed in places but it’s been down for 10 years and was put into the house when it was refurbished before it was sold to us. The carpet was relatively new when we moved in but I think it was quite cheap but has done us okay. It’s not damaged because I’ve vacuumed every day - it’s because it’s old and probably cheap at the time. It’s pretty clean just old.

We are getting new soon hopefully if we can afford it and says that I’m not allowed to vacuum it every day as I’ll ruin it and it’ll be a waste of money getting new carpets.

Aibu to think he’s being an asshole?! Surely vacuuming every day keeps a carpet in good condition? Says I need to do it every day few days...

Our downstairs carpet is newer than upstairs and it’s fine.

When we get new carpet aibu just vacuum it every day? I tend to do both up and downstairs every day in one go. It’s a small house. Takes about 10 minutes with my cordless dyson longer if using my non cordless.

He’s literally hoovered about 3 times himself since we’ve lived here. He just doesn’t get it!

I hoover for 15 minutes every hour on the hour. I cant abide dust.

imalmostthere · 13/04/2021 13:50

I Hoover downstairs everyday, sometimes twice, upstairs every other day. I also steam clean the bathroom and kitchen floors daily, and bleach the kitchen morning and evening, bedding changed Fridays. Bathrooms Saturday.
And I run my own business before anyone comments how I must not work - I work from home and have two Dc.
Everyone's standards of cleaning are different. It really makes no difference to me what others do as I don't live in it. If you're happy with what you're doing, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. These threads always get so judgmental.

Fieldsofstars · 13/04/2021 13:54

I Hoover 2-3 times a day in the high traffic areas. It really bloody needs it though.

Chunkymenrock · 13/04/2021 13:56

I vacuum once or twice a week which is absolutely fine. Daily really seems OTT.

Daphnise · 13/04/2021 13:57

I rarely hoover. The cleaner does it as often as I direct.

TENDTOprocrastinate · 13/04/2021 14:19

I’m surprised at how often people hoover! It would take me over an hour to Hoover the whole house! My downstairs is hoovered once a week and the upstairs once every other week (by cleaners)
We are a family of 4 with 2 cats.

inappropriateraspberry · 13/04/2021 14:21

I do think it's easier with cordless vacuums to get them out for a quick going over or even just odd spots as needed.
I definitely would t vacuum as much with something I had to plug in.

DontBeRidiculous · 13/04/2021 14:24

I don't know if "over-vacuuming" can ruin a carpet. I'd guess that vacuuming too little is worse than vacuuming daily, but that said, I don't vacuum that often. I don't have time or energy for that, even though ours is a multi-dog home, and they are of a breed that sheds heavily. Every few days seems good enough, unless I'm expecting company.

Why not try going at least every other day? I imagine you'll discover that it doesn't look bad on the "off" days, and you can spend the time doing something else!

Same I just wouldn't bother

We hoover the living room every day as that's where the dining table is (1 year old and messy 5 year old), the rest of the flat once a week.

It's a ground floor flat backing on to a communual garden and ants keep sneaking in if we don't hoover daily.

Jay3004 · 13/04/2021 15:19

I Hoover every day. I had a guy in to clean my carpets last year and he said it’s recommended to hoover them daily.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 13/04/2021 15:22

Christ I hoover once a week and that’s with DC, long hair and cat. It looks a bit scruffy by day 5/6 but hey, my standards must be low.

raeroe · 13/04/2021 15:29

I used to Hoover maybe twice a week but we got a new carpet that's dark blue and it's a bloody nightmare for seeing bits on it so now it's a few times a day with the handy vac and every 2nd day with the proper hoover 🤦‍♀️

Stroopwaffle5000 · 13/04/2021 15:31

2 kids and a white German shepherd........I HAVE to hoover the lounge every day! Before kids and animals I'd say about once a week lol

CookieBlue · 13/04/2021 15:37

I hoover downstairs every day. Two hairy cats and two kids who can’t seem to eat without dropping crumbs everywhere. I’m always amazed by how much the vacuum cleaner picks up. Takes me 5 minutes as our downstairs is quite small.

Upstairs is done once a week, usually one of our weekend jobs. It could probably do with being done twice a week to be honest but we have three floors and I hate dragging that thing up and down the stairs!

Serendipity79 · 13/04/2021 16:13

I hoover downstairs daily, and upstairs 2/3 times a week depending how badly its needed. I haven't ever heard of hoovering damaging carpets!

ConstanceGracy · 13/04/2021 16:14

Everyday here too, nothing strange about it .

ornge · 13/04/2021 16:16

I hoover at least once a day. Laminate floors but I hate seeing my hair or crumbs or anything on the floor.

Gwenhwyfar · 13/04/2021 16:23

@thebillyotea

How does it take 5-10 minutes? I have a one bedroom flat and it takes me at least 30!

if you were hoovering more often, it wouldn't take you that long.

we are talking about a quick hoover of the floor, not getting all your brushes out and dust the shelves, hoover the skirting boards, hoover the blinds, move beds and sofa to hoover underneath and under the cushions etc.. Grin

I can efficiently hoover my entire house in less than 30 minutes, it's not a full spring clean.

Um, no. It would take me the same amount of time each time. I don't have brushes on my hoover, just a basic one. Dusting is a different task not included in the hoovering time. I had no idea blinds could be hoovered and so that's a new one to me. I don't move furniture every time either.
greenlynx · 13/04/2021 16:23

We’ve got new carpet to the bedrooms (80% wool, quite expensive), were told by the seller that we should vacuum daily.

Gwenhwyfar · 13/04/2021 16:25

"Ok maybe not gross, but bloody dusty"

So there's dust on my floor?
Can't be that much because I start sneezing if somewhere is too dusty.
If someone visits and I haven't done it for about 3 weeks, I take a dustpan and brush near where I prepare food and on the bathroom mat, behind doors and it's fine so obviously not that dirty even when the hoovering needs doing.

Feelingconfused2020 · 13/04/2021 16:30

Another competitive cleaning thread yay

Those of you who clean more are not better people.

You have the right to clean as frequently or infrequently as you see fit and if you judge others for their cleaning habits it's entirely your problem and not theirs.

thebillyotea · 13/04/2021 16:31

Gwenhwyfa
I honestly do not know how it can take anyone 30 minutes to hoover a one-bed flat! I have a much larger house, and I can do the whole upstairs and downstairs in that time.

But yes, you can hoover anything, just lower the suction and put different brushes Grin

Bibidy · 13/04/2021 16:33
