Vacuuming every day.

Normal right?! I have two children - two messy children, a dog that constantly sheds and a messy dp! It just needs doing. I’ve always done it every day unless I’ve been extremely busy or ill or something - I have a cordless now so not much effort.

Anyway. Dp has always said how unnecessary it is and how it has damaged the carpet.

Our upstairs carpet desperately needs replacing as gone thin and frayed in places but it’s been down for 10 years and was put into the house when it was refurbished before it was sold to us. The carpet was relatively new when we moved in but I think it was quite cheap but has done us okay. It’s not damaged because I’ve vacuumed every day - it’s because it’s old and probably cheap at the time. It’s pretty clean just old.

We are getting new soon hopefully if we can afford it and says that I’m not allowed to vacuum it every day as I’ll ruin it and it’ll be a waste of money getting new carpets.

Aibu to think he’s being an asshole?! Surely vacuuming every day keeps a carpet in good condition? Says I need to do it every day few days...

Our downstairs carpet is newer than upstairs and it’s fine.

When we get new carpet aibu just vacuum it every day? I tend to do both up and downstairs every day in one go. It’s a small house. Takes about 10 minutes with my cordless dyson longer if using my non cordless.

He’s literally hoovered about 3 times himself since we’ve lived here. He just doesn’t get it!

@FeelinHappy I wouldn't say it encourages me to do more work! I'll spend 2-3 mins vacuuming the main room where there are crumbs, fur, bits of paper and stuff from children's 'crafts' in the evening. If I didn't, I'd be spending longer in one hit every week, so no longer, just broken up in smaller times.

Figgygal · 13/04/2021 17:08

Christ no I’ve got two kids and a dog
Hoover twice a week downstairs once a week upstairs as a norm

Gwenhwyfar · 13/04/2021 17:08

@WhiskyIrnBru

I can't believe some people hoover once a week.

I've got allergies and asthma so maybe it stems from that but literally can smell the dust and the air smells less heavy after hoovering. Once a day a to least. Sometimes twice depending on toddler mess.

I can't believe anyone but an obsessive housewife would do it every day.

What does dust smell like then?

lazylinguist · 13/04/2021 17:10

Yes a robot hoover is great. You'd think it wouldn't pick up as much as a normal hoover, but then you empty it and it's amazing how much is in there. Only problem is that it doesn't really do behind open doors or in small spaces between furniture etc.

stayathomer · 13/04/2021 17:10

Oh sorry by the way when I say Hoover daily I mean sitting room and hall and I'd sweep the kitchen. Bedrooms twice a week and I wash the bathroom floor nearly daily (4 boys and dh so has to be done!)

lazylinguist · 13/04/2021 17:12

Why would your bathroom floor need mopping more often because you have a husband? Small boys, maybe. But surely your husband doesn't pee on the floor?

IceCreamSunday87 · 13/04/2021 17:14

Hoover once a day here. Two children, one dog and a messy husband. You can really tell if a day is missed.

simbobs · 13/04/2021 17:15

Upstairs once a week, stairs at least twice a week, everywhere else daily and sometimes again when dog is moulting. A good quality carpet costs more but can take a lot of punishment. Our living room carpet has been down 25 years and will still keep going after another professional clean.

pinkmummy1 · 13/04/2021 17:20

2 kids under 5 and a black cat. A good day is me only needing to hover twice in the day sometimes more. Pre children I would still hover the main rooms everyday.

Endofmytether2 · 13/04/2021 17:22

@FlyingBurrito @Feelingconfused2020

I'm not in competition and I don't think I'm better than anyone else; I just have 7 pets that shed hair, including black labs that shed all year round.

I'd rather not vacuum daily, but if I don't the hair coats everything.
Upstairs is done once a week. If I only did downstairs once again week we'd be covered in pet hair.
It's done daily because it's necessary. If I didn't have pets, I'd do it as needed too, but it would hopefully just not be needed to be done quite so often as daily.

Who knows though!

After working outside there'd by muck and dirt on the ground, we've a bit of a wild garden and are building a wall and a fence and digging it all up and he works on it with the kids in the evening, sorry should have clarified!( the kids do leave pee sometimes though!)

AmandaHugenkiss · 13/04/2021 17:29

We Hoover once a week but don’t have kids (or pets now) and take our shoes off in the house. I feel slovenly compared to some on here but it honestly doesn’t get visibly dirty!

sunflowersandbuttercups · 13/04/2021 17:32

I can't believe anyone but an obsessive housewife would do it every day.

Nothing to do with being an "obsessive housewife" Hmm and everything to do with having four animals who shed hair, and two adults in the house who work outdoors and bring in dust, animal hair and muck on their clothes everyday.

Running the hoover around downstairs takes me approximately three minutes - it's hardly taxing!

Gwenhwyfar · 13/04/2021 17:35

"Running the hoover around downstairs takes me approximately three minutes - it's hardly taxing!"

I just don't believe it only takes you 3 minutes. (unless maybe you're one of the ones with a handheld).

PattyPan · 13/04/2021 17:35

@thebillyotea sex on the bathroom floor? doesn’t sound very comfortable Confused

I mean, okay? I'm not asking you to believe me.

I only have one room downstairs that needs hoovering, though - I live in a tiny two-bed terrace, not a mansion!

Cushionsnotpillows · 13/04/2021 17:47

Usually daily here downstairs which is mostly wood/Lino.
Upstairs once a week at least, carpet, sometimes by day 4/5 it's looking a bit yuk so I get the teen to do a swift pass before a better clean at the weekend.
One dh, one teen, one dog who sheds a lot.
I work pretty much full time self employed from home. DH and I tend to have a quick chat in the morning and divvy up the jobs including hoovering between us dep on whose schedule is busier that day. It works out fairly even usually.

lazylinguist · 13/04/2021 17:49

Yes, size of house makes a big difference I guess. My house isn't huge, but it's a 4 bedroom split-level house, so 3 floors. It takes a long time to hoover it all. That's why I got a robot hoover. It's hoovered the whole house today and I've mopped afterwards.

thebillyotea · 13/04/2021 17:50

not my favourite spot, but you know, underfloor heating, fluffy towels, shower, privacy..

FeelinHappy · 13/04/2021 17:51

@inappropriateraspberry yeah, I know, I'm being specious really and I only picked out your comment because I think you're right.

This isn't aimed at you at all, but I do think there is a wider point about all this labour, mainly being perceived as necessary only by women, and mainly being done by women. 5 mins a day is over an hour a week, it's not insignificant. How many husbands fetch the vacuum every time they see a speck? It doesn't feel like a proportionate response to me.

But I do need to make more effort to vacuum upstairs.

thebillyotea · 13/04/2021 17:52

I have to ask: how big is your one-bed flat! Confused

If it's just wizzing the hoover around downstairs, it might take me between 5 and 10 minutes at most. And my house is not that small.

dementedpixie · 13/04/2021 17:54

Takes me about 10 minutes to do my living room! The rest of downstairs probably takes another 10.

Mugginyouleftrightandcentre · 13/04/2021 17:55

I hoover the entire house on the hour, every hour.

Anything less is just minging.

TheTeenageYears · 13/04/2021 17:56

A dog that sheds then yes to daily hoovering but messy children and husband no. No shoes on in the house, food eaten at the table, crumbs from a meal swept or hoovered up straight away before they are kicked around the house and then everywhere needs cleaning. I like clean but don't like cleaning so will always go with an option to minimise mess/dirt.
