Vacuuming every day.

Normal right?! I have two children - two messy children, a dog that constantly sheds and a messy dp! It just needs doing. I’ve always done it every day unless I’ve been extremely busy or ill or something - I have a cordless now so not much effort.

Anyway. Dp has always said how unnecessary it is and how it has damaged the carpet.

Our upstairs carpet desperately needs replacing as gone thin and frayed in places but it’s been down for 10 years and was put into the house when it was refurbished before it was sold to us. The carpet was relatively new when we moved in but I think it was quite cheap but has done us okay. It’s not damaged because I’ve vacuumed every day - it’s because it’s old and probably cheap at the time. It’s pretty clean just old.

We are getting new soon hopefully if we can afford it and says that I’m not allowed to vacuum it every day as I’ll ruin it and it’ll be a waste of money getting new carpets.

Aibu to think he’s being an asshole?! Surely vacuuming every day keeps a carpet in good condition? Says I need to do it every day few days...

Our downstairs carpet is newer than upstairs and it’s fine.

When we get new carpet aibu just vacuum it every day? I tend to do both up and downstairs every day in one go. It’s a small house. Takes about 10 minutes with my cordless dyson longer if using my non cordless.

He’s literally hoovered about 3 times himself since we’ve lived here. He just doesn’t get it!

My husband would prefer it if it were even more frequent ...

Tell him where the Hoover is?

cooldarkroom · 13/04/2021 12:38

I hoover the main areas. Kichen, living dining area everyday with my stick dyson.
My floors are tiled.
Everyday the dust reservoir is mostly full of dog hair & dried dirt they bring in..we live in the country. The humans mostly take their dirty boots off entering.
So if I had carpets all that shit would be working into the pile.

I wouldn't hoover upstairs as much

fairburn · 13/04/2021 12:41

I vacuum every day as I said, and the amount of dust etc that I have to empty out of the vacuum is alarming.

Even if floors look clean, they probably still need a quick once over

fairburn · 13/04/2021 12:42

@gannett

Life is too short to vacuum every day. I'd go mad if I constantly thought about domestic stuff to that extent and a bit of untidiness is a price worth paying to spend my time on more interesting things.

Obviously I have no experience in whether over-vacuuming can result in worn carpets but that doesn't seem likely.

It takes 5/10 minutes. Life's too short to live in a messy house. Each to their own.

I love walking around barefoot comfortably on crumb-free floors

TrickyD · 13/04/2021 12:42

Get a robot cleaner. We have a Eufy Robovac 30c, it cleans all the downstairs carpets every day starting at 6.30 am.
Still have to do the stairs but it is a life changer,

Rosewood017 · 13/04/2021 12:42

Vacuuming shouldn't ruin the carpet, unless it's made of alpaca wool or something!

My 3 year old is obsessed with vacuuming. He'll hoover until the battery runs out and then dig out our old one. We spend hours shredding paper for him to hoover up and our carpets look great! In fact he tells me off if I touch his hoover. We wait til he's at nursery to do the bits he has missed.

mindutopia · 13/04/2021 12:44

About every 2 weeks. I don't have a dog though, only 2 messy children and dh. Not a chance in hell I'd be doing it every day.

MyGrassIsBrowner · 13/04/2021 12:45

I hoover once a day at least, I have wood floors downstairs throughout and I HATE feeling gritty bits under foot. I have a dog too and if I miss a day of hoovering I can tell.

gwenneh · 13/04/2021 12:46

We have three DC and 3 cats. Hoovering daily sometimes more than once is necessary. My house isn't large, I can do it on a single charge of the cordless vac.

Hoovering isn't going to damage or thin your carpet, that's just wear. Which, again, is pretty normal. Your DH is BU.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 13/04/2021 12:47

A few years ago when I still had three Labradors, I’d say once an hour hoovering was more the norm Grin

Beans13 · 13/04/2021 12:47

YANBU.

Your DH is being weird, ignore him.

I hoover a couple of times per week, but would hoover more if I didn't work as much, or had a dog etc

Caspianberg · 13/04/2021 12:51

I’m always amazed how much dust gets in the containers daily.
We have a robot hoover that does general living areas before we get up, and cordless gets run around hallway and kitchen often. Main hoover once a week.
We have short hair cats, a baby, wear no shoes indoors.

PickAChew · 13/04/2021 12:53

We vacuum most days, too. Ground in food isn't particularly good for carpets.

Endofmytether2 · 13/04/2021 12:53

YANBU. It's fair wear and tear and nothing to do with vacuuming.
We only have carpet upstairs which gets vacuumed once a week (properly) as we don't spend much time up there and pets aren't allowed upstairs.

Downstairs is tiled, and we have 7 pets that shed hair, so I have a robot vacuum which cleans the main open plan area daily (lounge, diner, kitchen, utility room and hallways).
On top of that I spot clean with my cordless shark when I see any mess and I vacuum properly once or twice a week, which involves moving all furniture out to clean behind/in and under it and vacuuming skirting boards, ceilings, etc, of cobwebs/dust using a soft brush attachment.

I also mop weekly and spot clean as needed.

Good to see the competitive over and under vacumming Grin

Is there no one who does it when it needs to be done, why all so scheduled?

Hankunamatata · 13/04/2021 12:54

My friends hoovers twice a day with her shedding dogs

Gwenhwyfar · 13/04/2021 12:55

"Once a week is gross"

Ha ha. I live alone and do it once every two to three weeks. My place is not gross.

My (multiple) rounds of hoovering per day is as needed, not on a schedule.
Cam2020 · 13/04/2021 12:56

I do most days, though dont always have time. We have wolden floors so every speck and crumb shows up Sad

Gwenhwyfar · 13/04/2021 12:56

"It takes 5/10 minutes."

How does it take 5-10 minutes? I have a one bedroom flat and it takes me at least 30! Just getting the hoover out of the cupboard and plugging it in takes a few minutes!

Gwenhwyfar · 13/04/2021 12:57

"Is there no one who does it when it needs to be done, why all so scheduled?"

I do when needed, but I know that it's on average every two to three weeks.

Beeme29 · 13/04/2021 12:58

Thanks all. If I didn’t have children or a dog it would likely need doing less but it can go from messy I’m just a few short minutes. My Jack Russell constantly sheds and there’s little white hairs everywhere if I don’t keep on top 😂

Get a light-ish speckly carpet and you won't see them!

I have a cordless now. I agree it takes a lot longer and more effort with my plug in one! I am definitely more motivated to do it with my dyson.

Generally it gets vacuumed throughout most days and after dinner I will do the kitchen and front room again! 😊 my kids have additional needs too so they probably more mess eating than most. Kitchen gets brushed up regularly too.

I've got low standards of housekeeping but with 2 dogs I have to vacuum at least once a day or everyone starts coughing and wheezing.
It's a cordless vac so only takes a few minutes, I start off with it empty and often have to empty it out half way through because it's completely full of dog hair.
