Vacuuming every day.

Normal right?! I have two children - two messy children, a dog that constantly sheds and a messy dp! It just needs doing. I’ve always done it every day unless I’ve been extremely busy or ill or something - I have a cordless now so not much effort.

Anyway. Dp has always said how unnecessary it is and how it has damaged the carpet.

Our upstairs carpet desperately needs replacing as gone thin and frayed in places but it’s been down for 10 years and was put into the house when it was refurbished before it was sold to us. The carpet was relatively new when we moved in but I think it was quite cheap but has done us okay. It’s not damaged because I’ve vacuumed every day - it’s because it’s old and probably cheap at the time. It’s pretty clean just old.

We are getting new soon hopefully if we can afford it and says that I’m not allowed to vacuum it every day as I’ll ruin it and it’ll be a waste of money getting new carpets.

Aibu to think he’s being an asshole?! Surely vacuuming every day keeps a carpet in good condition? Says I need to do it every day few days...

Our downstairs carpet is newer than upstairs and it’s fine.

When we get new carpet aibu just vacuum it every day? I tend to do both up and downstairs every day in one go. It’s a small house. Takes about 10 minutes with my cordless dyson longer if using my non cordless.

He’s literally hoovered about 3 times himself since we’ve lived here. He just doesn’t get it!

I think the time it takes depends on what is in the room, and how thorough you are on a day to day basis. I certainly don't move furniture every day or get in all the nooks and crannies. Daily, it's a vacuum over the main space where the every day crumbs and crap build up.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 13/04/2021 18:02

@dementedpixie

Takes me about 10 minutes to do my living room! The rest of downstairs probably takes another 10.
How big is your living room?!

I could do the whole house in ten minutes!

AliceMcK · 13/04/2021 18:04

I think it’s normal. Although it’s easy to not realise how dirty carpets are as they hide the dirt so well. I really noticed it when changing to mainly wood and laminate in most rooms, you can see the dirt so easily now and they need doing daily, sometime 2-3 times which makes me do my carpets more too.

Best thing I ever did was invest in a robovac so I can just set it to come on and do it for me.

thebillyotea · 13/04/2021 18:18

@Mugginyouleftrightandcentre

I hoover the entire house on the hour, every hour.

Anything less is just minging.

if you don't flood it in zoflora after hoovering, you are a slattern. HTH.
Wallabyone · 13/04/2021 21:21

I have a cordless Dyson, and I vacuum downstairs about three times a day.
I have three kids, they get crumbs everywhere. It takes about 5 minutes and I don't need to plug it in. Nothing worse than walking in crumbs and dust.

Lollypop4 · 13/04/2021 21:23

4dc ,2 cats , 2 adults here. I hoover upstairs once a week ( carpet)
Downstairs daily ( hard floor) sometimes twice a day downstairs, it needs it once a day for us

MakingPlans21 · 13/04/2021 21:27

Get a robot vacuum to save the hassle and don’t let your husband convince you your daily hoovering has ruined an old carpet!

Tigger85 · 13/04/2021 21:29

I Hoover a minimum of once per day, I have three dogs and a three year old. The hoover needs emptying every few days, the dogs have short coats but seem to shed a lot. We don't have carpet downstairs, only laminate and some rugs. Upstairs has carpet and is hovered every other day, the dogs are not allowed up there.

I hoover every day downstairs, probably every other day upstairs. I mop floors daily too.

Hoovering the carpet will not damage it! Hoovering lifts the pile (rotating brush head needed) and keeps the carpet nice.

I’ve got mostly polypropylene carpets, they aren’t cheap carpets. Wool carpets are much harder to keep nice.

WanderingTrolley1 · 13/04/2021 23:10

Large, 3 storey Victorian house. Kitchen/diner floor swept every day, mopped much less frequently.
Rest of the house is hoovered once a week.
@inappropriateraspberry yeah, I know, I'm being specious really and I only picked out your comment because I think you're right.

This isn't aimed at you at all, but I do think there is a wider point about all this labour, mainly being perceived as necessary only by women, and mainly being done by women. 5 mins a day is over an hour a week, it's not insignificant. How many husbands fetch the vacuum every time they see a speck? It doesn't feel like a proportionate response to me.

But I do need to make more effort to vacuum upstairs.
A lot of men hoover all the time. My FiL being one of them

Bluesheep8 · 14/04/2021 09:55

I'm wondering if all these people who are vacuuming multiple times a day have full time jobs?

ReginaaPhalange · 14/04/2021 09:56

I hoover every day. Wooden floors + cats & a dog which all shed means I have to. Doesn't bother me. We have a cordless hoover so for the sake of 10 minutes a day, it doesn't bother me.

HappydaysArehere · 14/04/2021 10:06

I remember being told not to Hoover new carpets too much for a few weeks. I think it depends on the type and quality of the carpet. A large percentage of wool costs more usually and I remember one we had releasing a lot of bits of wool for quite awhile. However, other carpets have behaved differently. As for vacuuming every day, well that depends on your situation, kids, dogs and if you have the time.

I'd say no. If you have full time jobs, children are likely to be in childcare or at schools all day so therefore less mess and less need for vacuuming. I'm a SAHM and have a pre-schooler and primary child. Home all day or for more of the day the a full time worker's family, can lead to a lot of mess!

even with a full time job you can find 10 minutes to hoover... some of us have full time job and do all the house chores during the week too.

We even manage to waste time on MN too Smile

MyGrassIsBrowner · 14/04/2021 10:10

@Bluesheep8 how long do you think hoovering takes? Confused wtf.

JanuaryJonez · 14/04/2021 10:17

Our 17yo DS hoovers the house about once a week. Two teens here but no pets.

We're all very tidy but there is absolutely no way we would do it more.

Estasala · 14/04/2021 11:19

I couldn't be bothered to Hoover every day, but if my DH wanted to, I wouldn't complain about it!

I think 10 years is a good enough time to get out of a carpet.

Could you tell me which cordless one you have as I think this might up our hovering hame?

PantsandBoots · 14/04/2021 11:26

I am a clean freak but I would agree with your husband! We bought an expensive carpet with premium underlay and the powerful suction from the vacuum ruined the pile within the first month Shock

Low suction setting will keep you both happy Wink

Tigerstripe20 · 14/04/2021 11:32

Yep twice a day sometime, long haired furry cat who hates being brushed and literally chucks paw fulls of litter out of his deep sided box and another short haired one.
I have a GTech for quick hoovers, and an old Dyson for edges etc ( its either or in the day not both)
Work from home but need to be available during all core hours and do most in short breaks or after dinner.
I hoover the lounge each evening before we go to bed and wipe down all kitchen surfaces.
Floors a mix of 80/20 wool carpets and laminate.
Carpets get washed twice a year to bring the pile back up.

yikesanotherbooboo · 14/04/2021 11:38

I vacuum upstairs once a week at most.when I had young children and dogs I vacuumed downstairs everyday but now that it is just 3 slipper wearing adults in the house I vacuum 3-4 times a week.
