Vacuuming every day.

Normal right?! I have two children - two messy children, a dog that constantly sheds and a messy dp! It just needs doing. I’ve always done it every day unless I’ve been extremely busy or ill or something - I have a cordless now so not much effort.

Anyway. Dp has always said how unnecessary it is and how it has damaged the carpet.

Our upstairs carpet desperately needs replacing as gone thin and frayed in places but it’s been down for 10 years and was put into the house when it was refurbished before it was sold to us. The carpet was relatively new when we moved in but I think it was quite cheap but has done us okay. It’s not damaged because I’ve vacuumed every day - it’s because it’s old and probably cheap at the time. It’s pretty clean just old.

We are getting new soon hopefully if we can afford it and says that I’m not allowed to vacuum it every day as I’ll ruin it and it’ll be a waste of money getting new carpets.

Aibu to think he’s being an asshole?! Surely vacuuming every day keeps a carpet in good condition? Says I need to do it every day few days...

Our downstairs carpet is newer than upstairs and it’s fine.

When we get new carpet aibu just vacuum it every day? I tend to do both up and downstairs every day in one go. It’s a small house. Takes about 10 minutes with my cordless dyson longer if using my non cordless.

He’s literally hoovered about 3 times himself since we’ve lived here. He just doesn’t get it!

@Bluesheep8

I'm wondering if all these people who are vacuuming multiple times a day have full time jobs?
How long do you think it takes to run a vacuum around the place?

Good god no!

We had 3 cats and toddler DD and still it was weekly at most. I did upstairs the other day for first time in months.

We have a robot vacuum but he had a toddler related accident so was out of action. To be fair when he was working we’d do downstairs most says but that’s almost all slate flooring. When reliant on person power we generally only hoover 5 mins before guests. Life is too short for housework.

My mum had the 'life's too short for housework' attitude. This meant I was always uncomfortable, stayed in my room a lot, and certainly never brought friends home out of embarrassment.

A bit of hoovering doesn't seem so bad.

For me the main reason I'd leave it ages was the faff of getting out the vacuum cleaner. Also loud, also hard work.

Now have the most amazing stick vacuum, which has an on/off button. I knew I'd never manage a Dyson because you have to hold the trigger on for the entire time.

Now I'm older, have various issues which mean weight is even bigger issue, I'm even more grateful for my 2-4lb job.

Managers pet fur, everything, also manages an hour on standard power, 10 minutes on full throttle.

Very rare that it ever truly runs out on the 10 minutes.

Plus, as above re carpet wear. Everytime you step on the fibres, any grime and grit digs into the carpet, cutting/ wearing through the fibres.

I think it's the vacuuming he has a problem with, or buying a new carpet.

@fairburn DD is only 19 months. We used to have a weekly cleaner but had to give her up due to nursery costs. By the time DD gives a shit we’ll be back to having a cleaner, as soon as the 30hrs kicks in it’s first on the list.

Interestingly I lovingly muck out my stable every day and the horse always has an immaculate bed. I suspect DD will share my tendencies to prefer stable chores to household though. She’s been mucking out with me since she was newborn but I’m not sure she’s ever seen me vacuum Grin

Your husband is being very unreasonable! Your carpets have lasted well.
I hoover once a day/sometimes two! It needs to be done. Especially when you have kids dropping crumbs etc all the time!

I used to also have horses etc, didn't mean I liked living like one

Quite a while actually if you have a large house.

Anoisagusaris · 14/04/2021 14:24

Sorry that’s meant to be in reply to @sunflowersandbuttercups

@fairburn I think you are what’s known as a fun sponge. Cheer up love

Anyone else getting a laugh that even a thread about vacuuming can devolve into passive aggressive judgement and responsive name calling?

It’s ok to vacuum as much or as little as one likes. Really.

wigglerose · 14/04/2021 16:45

Carpet wears. I don't hoover every day but with a long haired dog as well I really should.

define a "large house", do you live in Windsor Castle or something?
wonkylegs · 14/04/2021 19:22

2 kids no pets
I Hoover generally once a week except for the kitchen hard floor which gets a quick going over 3 times a week by the roomba.
Roomba doesn't do the whole house because we have lots of levels and I can't be arsed to move the base station that much and the stupid bastard thing doesn't do steps (I didn't buy it)
I don't have enough time to do more than that.
Our hall carpets are about 20yrs old and in perfect Nick despite being fairly pale, I suspect they were quite good when they went in though.
