Vacuuming every day.

Normal right?! I have two children - two messy children, a dog that constantly sheds and a messy dp! It just needs doing. I’ve always done it every day unless I’ve been extremely busy or ill or something - I have a cordless now so not much effort.

Anyway. Dp has always said how unnecessary it is and how it has damaged the carpet.

Our upstairs carpet desperately needs replacing as gone thin and frayed in places but it’s been down for 10 years and was put into the house when it was refurbished before it was sold to us. The carpet was relatively new when we moved in but I think it was quite cheap but has done us okay. It’s not damaged because I’ve vacuumed every day - it’s because it’s old and probably cheap at the time. It’s pretty clean just old.

We are getting new soon hopefully if we can afford it and says that I’m not allowed to vacuum it every day as I’ll ruin it and it’ll be a waste of money getting new carpets.

Aibu to think he’s being an asshole?! Surely vacuuming every day keeps a carpet in good condition? Says I need to do it every day few days...

Our downstairs carpet is newer than upstairs and it’s fine.

When we get new carpet aibu just vacuum it every day? I tend to do both up and downstairs every day in one go. It’s a small house. Takes about 10 minutes with my cordless dyson longer if using my non cordless.

He’s literally hoovered about 3 times himself since we’ve lived here. He just doesn’t get it!

@thebillyotea

Gwenhwyfa I honestly do not know how it can take anyone 30 minutes to hoover a one-bed flat! I have a much larger house, and I can do the whole upstairs and downstairs in that time.

But yes, you can hoover anything, just lower the suction and put different brushes Grin

I haven't got different brushes so that wouldn't help. My blinds are disgustingly dirty and really hard to clean. I've been using a feather duster and then trying to clean them with a sponge, then wiping with kitchen roll. Very difficult job. (I've seen the sock suggestion - doesn't work).

I defy anyone to hoover my flat in 5 minutes.

fairburn · 13/04/2021 16:36

@Gwenhwyfar

"Ok maybe not gross, but bloody dusty"

So there's dust on my floor?
Can't be that much because I start sneezing if somewhere is too dusty.
If someone visits and I haven't done it for about 3 weeks, I take a dustpan and brush near where I prepare food and on the bathroom mat, behind doors and it's fine so obviously not that dirty even when the hoovering needs doing.

Just from what gets collected in my vacuum even when I vacuum every single day, I'd say your place is dusty!
doctorhamster · 13/04/2021 16:37

Once a week here. It takes a good half hour (big house with lots of stairs) and I don't have time every day! 3.5 hours a week on hoovering would be a very depressing thought.

MrsTophamHat · 13/04/2021 16:37

I hoover the kitchen/playroom every evening because I hate feeling crumbs underfoot. I've got a cordless so it takes me about 3 minutes.

Fundays12 · 13/04/2021 16:37

I hoover downstairs once or twice a day in average. Upstairs is about 3 times a week as no food or drinks allowed up there. I have 3 kids (9 yr old, preschooler and toddler) plus 2 cats. My DH often Hoover's an extra time at night.

vixeyann · 13/04/2021 16:37

I hoover twice a day and we have a no shoe rule but, despite this, if I didn't we would be up to our knees in dirt. No idea where it comes from! Hoovering will actually help keep the pile plush on a new carpet as will prevent flattening.

Gwenhwyfar · 13/04/2021 16:38

"Just from what gets collected in my vacuum even when I vacuum every single day, I'd say your place is dusty!"

I don't see why that's a problem though. There's dust everywhere all the time. It's obviously not too much dust or I'd be sneezing as I do whenever I go somewhere very dusty.

99victoria · 13/04/2021 16:38

I have never vacuumed every day even when I had 3 young children. Once a week maybe - unless there was a particular mess or spill which needed sorting out

Miranda15110 · 13/04/2021 16:42

He's being an arse. I vacuum at least once a day downstairs, more if required. Upstairs a couple of times a week. 2 dogs, 1 cat and 1 x 11yr old. Dogs don't go upstairs.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 13/04/2021 16:43

I hoover at least once a day - no children here but we do have three cats and a dog.

lazylinguist · 13/04/2021 16:45

I think some people must have a different definition of 'necessary'. It is not necessary to hoover every day - you might choose to do so though. I have 2dc, a large dog and a cat and I hoover 2-3 times a week. I do give the stairs a quick sweep with a dustpan and brush most days though, because dog hair seems to collect there.

I have hard floors throughout, and mop twice a week after I've hoovered, which probably means my floors are cleaner than anyone's carpets, regardless of how often they hoover them, because presumably nobody washes their carpets twice a week.

PattyPan · 13/04/2021 16:45

No small children or pets here although I do have long hair which is constantly falling out and I Hoover once a week or less. Growing up my parents had cats which shed a lot and even then I don’t remember them hoovering more than about once a month.
Life’s too short to spend it cleaning!
and threads like this make owning a dog sound awful

LST · 13/04/2021 16:49

I have a messy dp, 2 kids a dog and 3 cats so I hoover downstairs most days. Upstairs once a week

5foot5 · 13/04/2021 16:51

Blimey. I used to think my poor old Mum was obsessively house proud but I don't think even she hoovered upstairs every day. Living room and hall maybe but not the bedrooms.

Mind you we didn't have a dog and we were trained from an early age to tidy up after ourselves and wear slippers rather than shows in the house.

Does your dog have to go upstairs? What exactly is it that your kids and DH do upstairs that requires you to hoover after them.

TheGumption · 13/04/2021 16:51

Absolutely essential in my house. We have a hairy dog and 4 kids, one of which is a crawling baby. I hoover downstairs every day and always pick up loads of dog hair and 'bits'. It would be rank after a week.

FangsForTheMemory · 13/04/2021 16:53

If you get a new carpet you'll be vacuuming it every day anyway, because they shed like nobody's business.

Megan2018 · 13/04/2021 16:55

Good god no!

We had 3 cats and toddler DD and still it was weekly at most. I did upstairs the other day for first time in months.

We have a robot vacuum but he had a toddler related accident so was out of action. To be fair when he was working we’d do downstairs most says but that’s almost all slate flooring. When reliant on person power we generally only hoover 5 mins before guests. Life is too short for housework.

LudoBear · 13/04/2021 16:56

Erm once every 10ish days here. Live on my own tho, no pets, and I'm hardly ever home...

FeelinHappy · 13/04/2021 16:56

@inappropriateraspberry

I do think it's easier with cordless vacuums to get them out for a quick going over or even just odd spots as needed. I definitely would t vacuum as much with something I had to plug in.
I'm sure you're right, but I do baulk a bit at an appliance that encourages you to do housework more often. They are meant to save you time, not create more work.
TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 13/04/2021 16:57

Dirt damages carpets, not hoovering

(Ex trade, if it matters!)

The grit wears the carpet when you walk on it, not air sucking the dirt out.

Ask him how he thinks removing dirt damages the carpet. 🙄🙄

WhiskyIrnBru · 13/04/2021 16:57

I can't believe some people hoover once a week.

I've got allergies and asthma so maybe it stems from that but literally can smell the dust and the air smells less heavy after hoovering. Once a day a to least. Sometimes twice depending on toddler mess.

alliejay81 · 13/04/2021 16:58

Everywhere gets done by my cleaner once a week. Most rooms get a top up on my day off (I only work 4 days). Dining kitchen / family room, multiple times a day. Other high traffic areas (living room/ hall) as required (could be twice in a day or every couple of days).

contraversial2021 · 13/04/2021 17:00

When we had a dog it was vacuum every day, kitchen floor every day at least as he was absolutely filthy. Now he's died it's twice a week. I can't believe how much time we save now we don't have pets.

Chocolateandamaretto · 13/04/2021 17:05

Get a roomba! It goes on everyday but definitely a timesaver. Although our dog has short hair, might struggle a bit with a long haired dog!

stayathomer · 13/04/2021 17:07

On mn the 'I cant believe you do that' people probably have very different children to whoever's commenting. There was recently a lot of washing threads and people can't believe doing washes once or twice every day but we have 4 kids and 2 are magnets for every type of dirt and one has horrendous asthma so we'd hoover daily. Ps everyone slippers inside are a godsend, they really cut down on dirt!
