to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

Totally agree. I don't see the attraction of LV, or now we come to it, Burberry and wouldn't have a Range Rover if you gave me one.

Zilla1 · 08/10/2020 12:37

For some it might be a positional good like you say, for some aspirational - they have admired the good and want to buy it when they can afford it, for some they may admire the craft. Ultimately, how many branded goods are bought purely for their utility. I suspect most have a brand value that encompasses more, certainly almost all cars and mobile phones.

Stressingismyhobby · 08/10/2020 12:37

I'm sure some people like them and who am I to judge what other people like and buy. But I really don't like any clothing or accessory with a brand plastered all over it - I agree, it's just a way of showing how much you paid for it.

Liftupthereceiver · 08/10/2020 12:37

The bags aren't aesthetically pleasing to you. Not my cup of tea either, but other designers are available and this style has been very popular for a very long time.

Redolent · 08/10/2020 12:39

Yes. There are other designer bags that are equally expensive but less garish “look at me” in their appearance.

Laaalaaaa · 08/10/2020 12:41

No, said as I sit admiring 2 of mine that are on the floor next to my sofa. I didn’t buy them to show off - I bought them because I loved the style. I have bought many other bags over the years but always go back to my faithful LV’s.

Time2change2 · 08/10/2020 12:43

Absolute pretentious crap along with most other designer goods. To be honest it hugely affects my opinion of friends or strangers when I see them with a bag or very high end designer item.

Ce7913 · 08/10/2020 12:44

Agree. They're hideous and tacky looking.

MaudHatter · 08/10/2020 12:44

I agree with you . “ I’ve made it and can afford to spend 1200 on a bag “

justanotherneighinparadise · 08/10/2020 12:47

They are ugly as sin and not a bag I would covet if wealthy as it’s a brand that’s counterfeited often. I’d still splurge my money on a nice expensive handbag but something a little more classy.

DillonPanthersTexas · 08/10/2020 12:49

Unless I am in a very swish part of town I just assume all designer gear I see on people is fake.

mamaonamission · 08/10/2020 12:50

Not necessarily.

I have quite a lot of lV items, purse, and a few bags.

1 I got a 18th birthday present.

2, I bought myself, just because I liked them and wanted to treat myself.

I hardly use them day to day as I wouldn't want to ruin them on trips to muddy parks and food shops. But I definitely didn't purchase them to "show off"

formerbabe · 08/10/2020 12:52

I have one...I really love it. It was a present to myself after I had dc1

Okaro · 08/10/2020 12:56

Was bought one as a present, then a lot of fakes came on to the market. My bag is still in the box in storage. Don’t think it will ever be used but don’t have the heart to sell it as it was from a relative.

PhlegmyHead · 08/10/2020 12:56

Not knocking designer stuff, per se, but the stuff with "I'M DESIGNER!!!!" written all over it just seems...tacky.

RevolutionRadio · 08/10/2020 12:56

I don't like the logo plastered all over them.

DisneyMillie · 08/10/2020 12:57

I love a designer bag - they just make me feel good but I can’t explain why.

Have lots all in similar LV price range but I agree I find LV tacky and wouldn’t have one. I think it’s because they’re faked so much.

Laaalaaaa · 08/10/2020 12:57

Clearly I’m tacky then - zero f’s given!

Beefcurtains79 · 08/10/2020 12:59

Well don’t buy one then? You sound a bit unpleasant.

AfterSchoolWorry · 08/10/2020 12:59

They're as ugly as sin. I will never understand the popularity!

whatswithtodaytoday · 08/10/2020 13:00

I think anything with an obvious label is tacky and designed to show off. LV bags are ugly as well as tacky, which makes it even worse.

rainydayslover · 08/10/2020 13:02

I usually get myself one once a year to treat myself. I save up as I used to smoke, so the cigarette money would go towards a luxury branded bag. Personally, I don't like LV and any of its styles. There are other brands such as Prada, YSL, Chanel (too expensive for me) and Gucci that do better bags. I have friends who dress from Primark but invest in expensive handbags. I only wear my handbag for an occasion as I don't want to ruin it wearing it on a trip to Tesco's. I do agree with your statement but decades ago, people used to wear expensive jewellery to make that statement but now it's just handbags, coats and vehicles.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 08/10/2020 13:03

They are horrible. When I see someone with anything with LV branding now, I presume its knock off. Absolute tack. Same thing happened to channel, and loads of other brand clothes, jewellery and accessories. Its also spreding to larger items like cars.

edwinbear · 08/10/2020 13:04

Not to my taste at all, I much prefer understated, I have a rather lovely Aspinal that I took all the padlocks and stuff off, so it's very plain and simple. But each to their own.

keeprocking · 08/10/2020 13:06

I get amazed when I see some 'celeb' carrying an enormous bag and often wonder what's in them, a photo of Mts Rooney showed her carrying two designer bags, price attached to photo, either bag was of the size my mother used to take on the market to get the week's vegeatables, and about as attractive.
