to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

You could say the same about all designers. Your paying for the name whatever the label may be. Not the bag as such.

rattusrattus20 · 08/10/2020 14:13

Not my 'bag' at all but, y'know, different people like different things, provided they're not openly looking down on me for having something far cheaper I couldn't really give a monkey's.

IncandescentSilver · 08/10/2020 14:14

If people want to spend their own money buying luxury goods, and they get pleasure out of that, then whats the problem?

Where do you draw the line? People who are already well fed spending money on luxury foods when they could survive on bread and dripping?

People have different priorities. Many waste an absolute fortune on cigarettes and alcohol. Handbags seem quite good value in comparison as at least you get a tangible item.

ktp100 · 08/10/2020 14:15

What so because you don't like something you don't think anyone else should?

I prefer LV to Mulberrry, I find them really boring but hey, it's not my business what other people like OR what they spend their money on.

It's definitely dickish to label everyone who buys an expensive item as having only bought it to show off their wealth. I know people who've saved for literally years for an expensive pair of shoes or bag. Not showy and again, not anyone else's business.

PhlegmyHead · 08/10/2020 14:15

@ElspethFlashman

I disagree that leather = better.

Some leather looks great with age. Other leather cracks and starts to look quite shabby. The corners can get pretty battered etc.

The canvas LV bags are absolutely bulletproof. I have a piece of luggage for the past 10 years which hasn't a scuff on it.

It also has massive resale value.

So dont knock it until you've tried it.

That's why I say veg tan, top grain leather. It'll last forever. It shouldn't crack if it's dyed properly (it's painted leather that cracks), and it's far easier to fix than canvas.

Love my LV Neverfall, I can carry anything in it (when I actually went to work), spare shoes, laptop, umbrella, still looks fab 5 years later.
I treated myself for a big birthday.
But yes I suppose could afford it and I loved it - so each to their own.
Now what I really want is a classic Chanel bag......but struggling to justify the cost......

Sophoa · 08/10/2020 14:16

I have an LV never full and I love it. It’s almost completely indestructible, it’s my work bag and literally never gets full and the leather is aging beautifully. It is genuine and to be honest I don’t care if anyone thinks it’s not, it’s an absolute classic. Since I’ve had it i also use it as my hand luggage when travelling and it’s carried by as many elegant classy women as those who aren’t.

ktp100 · 08/10/2020 14:17

@IncandescentSilver Totally agree re priorities - I absolutely hate sunny foreign holidays and would happily drop a grand on a bag rather than a fortnight of drinking/sunbathing somewhere hot.

My money, my choice.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/10/2020 14:19

@Mumblechum0

Totally agree. I don't see the attraction of LV, or now we come to it, Burberry and wouldn't have a Range Rover if you gave me one.
Agree re: the handbags, but as a wumman with a huge full of energetic spaniels, I would joyfully accept the gift of a range rover.

How can thinking something is ugly and overpriced mean that I'm jealous and/or bitter? Confused

attillathenun · 08/10/2020 14:20

I have a LV bag, I bought it because I love the style (it’s not one of the common designs you see a lot of). However I don’t have the monogrammed pattern because I agree it looks tacky. I also didn’t buy it because I want to show off how much money I have, some of us like to collect these things like people like to collect other things 🤷‍♀️ Each to their own, I personally don’t understand why you are butt hurt about the way other people spend their money.

badacorn · 08/10/2020 14:21

I honestly think some people buy them because they’ve bought into the luxury branding and they see it as a real treat for themselves. I’ve heard of people just collecting these bags and not really wearing them out. Who am I to judge?

I don’t think it’s always to show off. People get into debt for designer stuff too.

I don’t have one but I think use of the word ‘ugly’ to describe something that is not garish or gaudy means you do have some strong feelings about this.

Think to yourself why you’re picking on LV, which is associated mostly with women, rather than Nike, which is associated mostly with men, and is much more widespread.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/10/2020 14:31

I don't like clothing and accessories that provide free advertising for the manufacturer.
Even without the logos I wouldn't buy what is considered a high end brand. A Mulberry is more than my (part time) wages and I have more important things to spend my money on like food and keeping a roof over my head. FFS they are made by machine in a factory, not hand crafted by vestal virgins. I've been to the factory in Somerset for an interview and got given the walk around by my interviewer. (I didn't take the job). If you want to see what's involved in making one have a look at the careers page on their website.
My best handbag purchase? A £20 number from Matalan which I've always had positive comments about. What's more it does exactly what a handbag is supposed to do- carry my essentials crap

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 08/10/2020 14:32

Don't you mean 'Channel' as stated by a previous poster?

What a weird thing to start a thread about. If you don't like them, don't buy one. Simples. No need for the judgement OP.

TDogsInHats · 08/10/2020 14:32

@keeprocking

I get amazed when I see some 'celeb' carrying an enormous bag and often wonder what's in them, a photo of Mts Rooney showed her carrying two designer bags, price attached to photo, either bag was of the size my mother used to take on the market to get the week's vegeatables, and about as attractive.
I agree wholeheartedly. I also assume it's a fake and not the real thing cos why on earth would someone splash out on something so ugly and tacky?
1forAll74 · 08/10/2020 14:32

I don''t think having one of these awful bags is to show off how much money you have, People buy them if they have the money to waste on them, and they follow trends, or see some so called celebs brandying them around.
I don't understand why people spend mountains of money on some so called special bags, they don't make any statement to me about the person. I would be frightened of anything expensive getting stolen these days anyway.

TableFlowerss · 08/10/2020 14:33

Same for everything designer though isn’t it. If folk are daft enough to pay for designer items then more fool them.

As an adult I’ve never been bothered about designer things. I shop in supermarkets fir clothes or the high street. I would rather spend my money on experiences as oppose to items.

It’s like designer shoes. £500 for 1 pair of shoes is just madness in my opinion. I suppose it’s whatever floats your boat but yes I do agree a lot if people buy these overpriced products as a status symbol

LuaDipa · 08/10/2020 14:34

These threads are hilarious.

I have a real weakness for designer bags and shoes. I always buy classics that don’t age, including a LV tote and a Chanel 2.55. And it’s not because they are expensive or to show off, the quality and finish is far superior. Dh’s ‘thing’ is cars and we have a few of those too, including a Range Rover which is actually the most comfortable car I have ever driven.Grin

It’s a shame to realise that people judge people’s spending habits in this way. As far as I am concerned, what we spend our money on is no-one else’s business really.

Elphame · 08/10/2020 14:35

The make up bag could perhaps make a useful pouch to keep in your handbag

It's actually being used to keep one of my back up photo hard drives in! It's just the right size

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 08/10/2020 14:37

I have nothing against designer bags but this is absolutely everywhere so I assume it's fake. I feel sorry for anyone who paid for the real thing. And as for the comment about checking out watches there's a good few fake Rolexes around too.

There are various things that I think are ugly and overpriced too.

I haven't started a thread about them though. Why? Because we all like different things. One woman's meat (or falafel) is another woman's poison. There are far more important things in this world to get wound up about than LV handbags.

To be honest, it just sounds like someone you dislike has bought herself a LV bag and you want to slate her.

Crownofthorns · 08/10/2020 14:40

I wish there was a ‘Like’ button for this!

Designer handbags and nice jewellery are my thing. We eat out very rarely and even then normally at pubs where we are splashing out if we spend more than £20 on a meal for the three of us 🤣 Ditto pricey wines, posh hotels, expensive holidays etc. Everyone has different priorities. I also sell a lot online and normally sell something before I buy a new item. I love the look and feel of a well-made designer bag and have several LVs. I like the monogram print but so find some of the styles tacky.
